Does anyone remember when Greggs used to sell half a dozen soft or crusty rolls?

Where can I buy some that will taste similar?

Asda does baps but they taste shite

The Greggs ones used to have a distinct taste amd I still remember how theyd separate from the bunch

(hungry but not eating late)

Yeah I used to sell them! They shifted from bakery to “food to go” years ago.

Have you got a local bakery? That’s where you’ll find the good rolls.

jezlifecoach · 07/12/2025 01:42

Yes and steak pies … they were delicious
think I had one last in like 2008

mumofoneAloneandwell · 07/12/2025 11:24

You worked in Greggs? 😍 did you get to take baked goods home?

I've got a Gail's near me, will have to look in there - there are quite a few bakeries but they're the overpriced ones

Ive got this nostalgia for a soft roll caked in butter and good ham 😋

@mumofoneAloneandwell agree about Asda bakery it used to be good years ago, I used to love the half baquettes, they’re all doughy inside now and the crust isn’t ‘shiny’

Sainsburys bakery soft rolls aren’t too bad, nothing exceptional but much nicer than Asda, at least they have some flavour. I also love the multi seed ones but they sell out quickly.

Ive got a Pukka vegan mince and onion pie for dinner,❤️🐷 it’s definitely pie weather 🌧️

They did bloomer loaves too! I do miss those.

Yes. No solution other than to try an independent bakers.

Bread is so disappointing now. Most of the supermarkets round us have stopped baking on the premises, just finish them off and leave them on the shelves all day. And the independent bakers seem to be disappearing. While everything in packetd is laden with preservatives that make it taste like plastic and leave you feeling bloated or worse.

CalzoneOnLegs · 07/12/2025 11:45

@Thingamebobwotsit
there are new bakeries opening here, but they are all Artisanal and spelt/sourdough etc and are £6.00 a loaf

I miss the old school bakeries, does anyone remember Wilkins the baker was that a National chain ?

DarkEyedSailor · 07/12/2025 11:46

We had Don Miller's, anyone remember them in Mansfield/Nottingham? They did the best doughnuts in the world.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 07/12/2025 11:50

I am in Scotland at the moment. The baker round the corner from my Mum's house baked and sells fantastic rolls. I grew up just knowing them as rolls but I believe the distinctive Scottish kind are also known as morning rolls. Nothing like them for a bacon roll. I'll be having one filled with ham and mustard fairly soon. Lucky me! They don't stay fresh for long so I can't take them back to London with me, sadly.

shellyleppard · 07/12/2025 13:04

@mumofoneAloneandwell home bargains have an in store bakery.... they do crusty baguette and rolls. Hit and miss though if they have any in. Also their part baked rolls/baguette are really lovely

PauliesWalnuts · 07/12/2025 13:16

I was only trying to remember the name of Don Millers last week @DarkEyedSailor ! There was one in Rochdale of all places - and the doughnuts were incredible.

I’ve just stopped buying soft rolls from Sainsbury’s after noticing three in the bread in hadn’t been eaten and hadn’t gone off despite being 3 weeks old. Looked at the ingredients and they’ve started putting palm oil in, so that’s made me cross.

Do you have a Martin’s bakery near you? There are a lot in Mcr.

Yes I remember them I think they had a tonne of salt in them to give them that flavour 😀 they also did a sliced loaf i liked. I had a roll on bacon this morning and the roll was just squishy and horrible .

Officially, no. Unofficially, it depended on the manager 😉

We actually had to throw them in bin bags and then cover them in bleach to put off the dumpster divers (who we wouldn’t have minded but they trashed the bin areas every time leaving us loads of clearing up to do).

I was dismayed about all the waste. A manager told me they used to donate leftovers but then those collecting donations would get too entitled to certain amounts and angry if there wasn’t enough so it stopped. (May or may not be true, that’s just what I was told. And this was a long time ago.)

CalzoneOnLegs · 07/12/2025 14:14

@OriginalUsername2 that is shocking
