I'm sorry to react harshly @Xmasdemon but I really don't like the way this has been posted.

What do you expect the school to do in this case? Do you think they should just do nothing and let pupils get sick and suffer?

Are you trying to intimate that we're going back to the "bad old days of COVID' to whip up the usual froth on here about children's mental health and "let them catch a cold" etc?

YABVU.

JoshLymanSwagger · 04/12/2025 14:05

Not again! 🤦🏻‍♀️

Xmasdemon · 04/12/2025 14:06

@JacquesHarlow I am just genuinely curious as to whether we need to worry about another pandemic

JoshLymanSwagger · 04/12/2025 14:11

@Xmasdemon The school shut for a couple of days last week. They have loads of "flu" type cases.
I doubt very much there's a new "Congleton" strain of Covid knocking around.

DisplayPurposesOnly · 04/12/2025 14:13

I loathe scaremongering posts like this.

It's been said many times that this is a bad year for flu (there's an article on the BBC news website today) so i doubt it's anything more than that.

Xmasdemon · 04/12/2025 14:15

@DisplayPurposesOnly there is an article on BBC where a doctor says this is the worst flu season she has witnessed since she started in 2010

But there’s no suggestions these children have any more significant than a bad (but bog-standard) flu.

Obviously at some point there will be another pandemic, probably bird flu. But there’s literally no reason to think this school is a worrying warning sign of imminent disaster.

Its a fast- mutated strain, that will evade vaccines

There’s always flu that evades vaccines.
These children and staff are not seriously ill, it was just a lot of them. The story you posted is from a week ago, the school is now open and has been all week.

If it turns out that these children were the first ones infected with what becomes the next pandemic I’ll happily admit I was wrong. I just don’t see why you’d think that’s likely at this point.

Well it's just the fact that if it's going to cause massive increase in hospital admissions then measures will need to be had, like with covid

JudgeBread · 04/12/2025 14:29

My advice would be to stop reading the news if you're this prone to panic over something this mundane. It's scaremongering bullshit mate and you've fallen for it hook, line and sinker.

GlassofRosePorfavor · 04/12/2025 14:31

Ahhh right. You're a mask advocate without actually telling us you're a mask advocate

NoSoupForU · 04/12/2025 14:32

Jesus fucking christ. Is there not enough doom and gloom about already without just making shite up to get all up in a frenzy over?

Every year they say its the worst flu season. Every year they say the vaccine is only effective against certain strains.

Xmasdemon · 04/12/2025 14:34

They're saying it's unprecedented though

Not in that article they aren’t. I worked in a school that was asked to shut for 3 days for a deep clean because of an outbreak of winter vomiting bug. Ithat was well before the pandemic - about 10 years before I think. It’s not unusual, it just gives a chance to stop the cycle of infections.
@JudgeBread why do you think it’s scaremongering? It’s reporting factually what happened and saying it’s nothing to worry about. OP has scaremongered herself.

ShesTheAlbatross · 04/12/2025 14:41

Yes, this article from the NHS talks about a “tidal wave” of cases and a “staggering” increase.

https://www.england.nhs.uk/2024/12/tidal-wave-of-flu-hitting-hospitals-amid-record-treatment-delivered-for-patients/

Oh wait - that’s from last year.

I don’t think anyone is suggesting that flu cases aren’t high. But your “Deja vu” and “measures will be needed” comments suggest you think return to some sort of lockdown will happen?

I'm not actually scared or mongered I've been following the news on this for several weeks and it's interesting to me. People shrugged covid off as well when the thing is it wasn't that dangerous to most healthy people it just ran through the population like crazy, which is a problem

Yeah you're right, posting about it talking about "a new pandemic" is scaremongering.

I revise my post - OP stop scaremongering others and yourself.

It ran through a population where nobody had any immunity. That’s not usually the case with flu. Many are vaccinated, many carry some natural immunity. Sometimes a really dangerous strain like Spanish flu will appear and that does cause a need for action - there’s no suggestion of that this year.

Xmasdemon · 04/12/2025 14:48

@cardibach I think when the virus mutates quickly that's an indicator of the result on the population. I could be wrong, could just be similar to swine flu in 2009

I suspect you are wrong. Flu always mutates. It’s what it does. And actually, swine flu made very little difference to anyone’s life anyway.
