Men who can't keep to their own side of a double seat on public transport

Pavementworrier · 02/12/2025 17:41

This is getting worse right? It's getting to the point where they just launch themselves halfway across both and crush the person sitting at the window and don't seem to see anything wrong with this. Guy just did that to me so I elbowed him away and he turned to look at me in outrage.

I think part of the issue is people who used to drive are getting public transport more. Which is good overall but it also means a lot more selfish pricks in enclosed spaces.

Also if you're too big for the seat it is your duty to perch

As above that's quite different from pressing your disgusting body against a stranger so they are caused physical pain then reacting with outrage when they elbow you.

Well I see your point but for me, it depends on what said person looks like.
I really won't moan about anyone pressing against me if they are my type.

That's just fat shaming some people are bigger and can't help it.

So fat people get their seat and the remaining half?

No. Perch. Or walk, the steps would do them good.

Wow says more about you as the thread goes on.

I have to agree that obesity is more of an issue here than gender.

Squishedpassenger · 03/12/2025 15:51

Written from the 254 bus during school run where I am being forced into the side of the bus by the person sharing this seat. My arms are pinned to my sides.

Disagree. Fat women are usually a lot more thoughtful than fat men and will not insist on forcing their entire bodies into the seat space.

This is why I mourn the demise of hat pins.

Again.....stop with your anti-men hatred and come travel on a London bus 😂😂
Fat. Thin. Male. Female.
It makes no difference to behaviour and taking over seat space. Or space by the door. Or aisle space.
All squishy together.

No thank you this sort of thing is why London sucks!

Meh....it's not so bad here.
To be honest it's pretty similar on the buses in the East Midlands town my mother in law lives.

Strongly disagree. I think more people nowadays are oblivious to their size.

I think oblivious to the fact that other people exist in a physical sense, actually. You get a lot of people both fat and thin who seem to expect the world to vapourise around them as them amble through.

This is not a "man" thing.
This is a public transport thing.

I’m sure there are women who this

but I’ve only experienced men doing it. Lots of men

So I don't see your point.

In terms of size/weight, it's not a gender issue but I've never seen a woman do this...

THIS. Yes, there are other types of insconsiderate public transport users, but this form of spreading out their legs so that you are huddled in your seat is a uniquely male thing. I have a similar picture I took last week where you can also see the woman who is scrunched into herself to make herself smaller.

Also, there's a much higher proportion of people who don't fit in the seats who make zero effort to scrunch up who are men, than women.

The reality is that some obese people cannot close their legs. Their feet are constantly at ten-to-two and their thighs stop them from getting their legs close together. This was the situation I was on the bus yesterday next to a very large woman. You cant be large and make yourself small.

StarlightLady · 04/12/2025 07:41

OP, YANBU. I call them Bertie Big Bollox. Being of a certain age I’ve seen a significant number of mens’ bits and no man is so large he needs to sit like that.

BIossomtoes · 04/12/2025 07:46

There’s a reason it’s called manspreading. It’s because it’s a male phenomenon. Google it and look at the images. Women just don’t do this.

It's labelled as a gendered phenomenon because people are oblivious to their own actions.

You know, this idea that people hog space isnt just said by women about men. Black people often discuss this as an issue with white people, particularly white women, as they have been made to think they are so ickle and dainty that they can't possibly be in the way.

It’s not about hogging space. It’s about inserting yourself into another person’s personal space in an aggressive way, ie man spreading. You never see a woman get on the tube, sit down and spread her legs.

No, but I regualrly have to ask women to move their things so other people can use the seat next to them. I rarely have to ask a man that (sometimes have to ask schoolboys).

The other thing young women seem to do is have their legs up or be stretched over the seat. Or just sit in totally inappropriate places!

Last week at Liverpool Street Station where you walk down from the trains to the tube, there was a young woman, uni age, just sat on the bottom step of the stairs going down to the tube. Nearly tripped over her!
