Hi, I’m seriously thinking of purchasing EMF protection.

Ive looked at various websites, and my goodness, what a lot to learn.

You can purchase, it seems, a variety of protectors, from a simple pendant (reasonable cost), to a bed canopy (Huge cost).

I’ve also learned there’s such a thing as an EMF meter, so you can tell if you have adequate protection.

If anyone has experience of buying and using anything EMF protective, please may I have your thoughts?

Please don’t slam me for considering this purchase, as I have my reasons to want protection.

Thank you

EMF is a surprisingly common theme of concern during psychosis. The websites you are coming across are going to be exploiting people's fear to gain profit, its not a legitimate health concern, and even if it was then the things they're selling wouldn't help.
Save your money and try to avoid the corners of the Internet which are created to cause fear.

BadgernTheGarden · 01/12/2025 14:20

A fool and his money....

Nopenott0day · 01/12/2025 14:22

The only thing that stops any (and not all) EMF is a Faraday cage.

With the greatest respect op all those pendants etc are just rubbish.

Octavia64 · 01/12/2025 14:24

Electromagnetic fields include radio waves, light waves, any kind of electricity.

it would be very difficult to protect yourself from all kinds of electromagnetic fields.

you would need I think to go and live in a house with no electricity and to make sure you did not see any light you would need to use blackout blinds or similar to make sure you live in the pitch black.

presumably you would not go outside at all as the sun gives off vast amounts of electromagnetic fields and even the moon and stars also have them.

i’m not sure if it possible to block radio waves.

WrylyAmused · 01/12/2025 14:27

Sorry, all those products are snake oil.

Did you know that you as a human also generate an EMF? It's not strong, but it exists.

You can mostly shield from EMF, by being in a space with no EMF source (except yourself, I guess), and surrounding yourself in a metal sheet. Any gaps in the metal would need to be shorter than the wavelength of the radiation you were trying to protect against. That varies hugely, from radio waves to UV & more.
Your phone, and your electronics will not be useable for you. If you have electronics inside the shield with you, there will also be EMF there.

It's not a practical thing to do. And the concept of a pendant (or any of these other products) being able to do anything about it, is simply unscrupulous sellers preying on people who don't understand the science and what EMF actually is.

RubberyChicken · 01/12/2025 14:40

EMF? Its unbelievable 🎸

Eightdayz · 01/12/2025 14:48

Don't waste your money. Its akin to people buying devices to stop their cars using too much fuel. ITS A SCAM.

You cannot escape emf it's everywhere.

I have my reasons to want protection

Whatever those reasons are, they aren't rational.

Please don't waste your money. These people are just stirring up fears and exploiting people with mental illnesses. You don't need protecting from EMF. I promise you, you really don't.

I'm not going to debate your reasons for wanting protection, but do you understand that even if you feat of EMF was completely radical, none of these things would protect you.

I work in a relevant area of consumer protection. Those pendants as well as being useless are also radioactive which is hilarious because in order to protect from a non hazard, people are wearing something that is illegal and dangerous.

GasPanic · 01/12/2025 15:34

Well there are emfs and emfs.

High frequency emfs such as GHz frequencies can literally be screened by wrapping stuff in tin foil or metal of pretty much any thickness. If you don't believe me put your phone in a metal biscuit tin, close the lid and try ringing it. This is why 5G aerials have to go everywhere, because it is much easier to block a high frequency signal than a lower one.

As the frequency gets lower though the thickness of metal needing to screen them off gets thicker. So by the time you get down to low frequencies such as in the 50Hz range (mains frequency) you probably need metal half a metre thick or more to screen them off. Not exactly practical. So screening yourself from mobile signals pretty easy, screening yourself off from the 50Hz emi coming from a substation transformer, pretty hard.

Pendants are a load of rubbish. And remember if you screen anything off (like your house) then you need to screen off any wires that go into it, otherwise they will couple emi through the faraday cage and inside the house. So that means filters on all the mains supply, all metal pipes, tv aerial etc. Good luck getting a filter that will allow the mains at high current to pass yet screen out the higher frequencies. And if you filter the TV aerial you might end up filtering the tv frequencies as well unless you know what you are doing.

There are more legitimate reasons for screening off things like your car keys and bank cards. But screening off the whole house, difficult and impractical.

Most screening stuff I have seen seems to be sold by people who don't have a good handle on the science to people who don't have a good handle on the science.

Bjorkdidit · 01/12/2025 16:11

I think with these sorts of issues, people can do a lot to help themselves.

Their EMF exposure would be a lot lower if they didn't use electricity or wireless communications. They'd also be unable to access the internet so wouldn't see all the charlatans' websites.

MossAndLeaves · 01/12/2025 17:18

If you want to focus on a health concern, stress is actually one of the most damaging things that's the easiest for us to work on controlling.
Have a research into the impacts of stress on the body, and methods of managing and reducing stress.

Thank you for that, comments like yours are so helpful and not at all damaging to the OP.

To everyone else, I’m obviously disappointed that there is not a single positive response.

I still say thank you, as I feel it was a question that I wanted opinions on, and that’s what I got.

i didn’t really want any comment on my mental state, or any vulnerability posters think I might be suffering from.

I did access EMF ACADEMY, and they give unbiased information as they don’t actually sell anything re EMF protection.
It was after seeing that site that prompted me to ask the Mumsnet community.

Seasons greetings to you all.

"This post may contain affiliate links."

This is how they make their money. The website is full of links to other sites that DO sell things, and from which they get a referral fee. It is their business to keep people (Unnecessarily) scared.

Hi @NotAsDumbAsISeem - just to let you know, EMF Academy isn't unbiased. It links to other sites that sell things, and it makes money that way. It is a site aimed at creating and exploiting fear. Any site that tells you that you need to protect yourself from EMF is scaremongering at best and exploiting people at worst.

Haven’t a clue what you mean about “beanies”.

I haven’t proceeded any further with EMF protection.
i want to have further information about such things, and all the negative views from mumsnetters have further made me think.

I have in the past, purchased RFID protective sleeves/wallets for my bank cards and driving license.
Are they a scam too ? I mean I can’t actually prove the sleeves have protected my identity, any more than I could prove that an EMF protector does what it claims.

i certainly have no wish to be shamed for asking these questions. 😢
