Royal Mail has lost my passport that I was sending back

Posting here purely for traffic because what do I do?

I renewed my passport last week and posted it off using the tracked before 1pm service. It was picked up from my house on Tuesday and has now been stuck at “your item is due to be dispatched to the Home Counties” since Wednesday morning. It’s obviously lost.

what do I do now? Can I claim any extra cost back from Royal Mail? Will I still get my new passport? I’ve got a trip in February and need it renewed by then

We live in France and pretty much have to renew our British passports by post. My husband's new passport came back via Bahrain, according to the tracking! He was worried for a few days but it was all fine 🤷‍♀️

ApolloandDaphne · 01/12/2025 16:06

I sent mine tracked delivery. It never updated on the tracking but it was obviously received and all renewed just fine.

JudgeBread · 01/12/2025 16:09

Hey mate I used to be a postie so I might be able to help.

First of all have you sent it Special Delivery Guaranteed by 1pm? Or did you use either 24 or 48 tracked? Sounds like an obvious question but people get them mixed up all the time!

I was just about to ask this.... my DP is a postie.

Just get in touch with RM.

It's absolutely crazy at this time of year, and certainly by DP's depot is receiving at the very least double the amount of post and parcels. I can't imagine what the hubs are like!

Oblomov25 · 01/12/2025 16:12

Contact them says every single poster. No says op!

By contacting them it raises the profile on your case and you get someone looking into
it. This then gets a human investigating your case. Or don't bother! 🙄

I would start making a fuss direct with RMG. It's December, customer service is going to be absolutely inundated so you need an acknowledgement that they collected it and mislaid it for HMPO.

Did they collect it from your house? Was it your usual postie?

HMPO have specific processing sites which they are in the process of consolidating so if your passport has been forwarded onto the new site, it may not show up until it arrives there instead. But still max 3 days.

Yes, it was collected from home. I’ll have to call them on my lunch break tomorrow and raise hell. £8.95 plus a collection fee and they can’t even do their jobs!

It’s finally at the Home Counties MC, due to be delivered by 1pm today… no wonder they charge so much for postage when they’re inventing time machines!

I received a form from my council that i have to fill in in a certain time frame. Because it took ten days for RM to get it here ive asked the council for an extension which they have kindly agreed to. RM are terrible. I hope you get this resolved @wecouldberightforeachother

I’m gonna be cheeky and ask for a refund of the postage fee!

You're being very dramatic!
When i sent mine back I just stuck it in the postbox with a 1st class stamp on it

But it probably was, it just hasn't been scanned in yet. As dozens of people have said to you. You are massively overreacting

PaulineMush · 01/12/2025 19:16

It’s obviously lost

Well it isn't is it?

And say what? They’ve lost it!

No, they haven't.

Jeschara · 01/12/2025 19:27

You are nor being dramatic, Royal Mail have not delivered my partners passport. He has contacted RM,58 mins on the phone then re directed this has been going on a couple of weeks. No contact from RM at all.

Good luck in getting your passport.

Oh I'm glad it seems to be moving, it's not cheeky at all to request a refund on this - it's supposed to be a guaranteed service and they're the only parcels that RM management treat like gold dust - we get an absolute ripping if we don't deliver them on time. You're completely within your rights to get the money back, you didn't get the service you paid for!

tara66 · 01/12/2025 20:20

The Times said 11/11/25 that £666million worth of parcels (in delivery) were stolen to the year to June - information came from police apparently. I am trying to make a claim back charge for 4 parcels not received valued over £300 through my bank. I suppose old passport may get stolen?

I’m guessing they’re a target for fraud. I don’t like that they make you write your reference on the label. When you pay for a postage label like I have, you end up with your reference and address all over the place!

RM lost a phone i sent by 1pm special delivery back in June. You have to wait so many business days before they'll investigate then they have up to 30 working days to respond. I never recieved a response within 30 days and waited until mid September for them to send a cheque of the amount the phone was worth.

JenniferBooth · 01/12/2025 20:34

I read in a magazine last month that the last posting day for first class is twentieth December When i read this out to DH he said...........for which Christmas.

It's not cheeky to ask for a refund. It's standard. The Special Delivery by 1pm product is sold as "delivery by 1pm next day - or your money back", so asking for a refund is exactly what you should do. You may well be due £5 delay compensation, too - see Retail Compensation Policy for Delays │ Royal Mail Group Ltd.
