How to tell boss I'm off sick with stress/burnout

I'm awaiting a call back from the doctor and I'm due to start work shortly. I have been feeling burnt out and overwhelmed to the point where at times I'm not eating properly and I haven't wanted to see friends. I think I need some time off work but I'm afraid to a) phone in sick and b) tell my boss the reason. He's not overly understanding of stress etc and I feel anxious about it

Just say you are unwell And currently
dont want to disclose the reasons why. Then get a doctors note to sign you off. Take your time coming back and be prepared to be both candid and suggest a positive action plan to address the actions moving forward. You won’t be able to do this right now so give yourself plenty of space to do it.

I had a few weeks off work for similar reasons so I get how you're feeling anxious about calling in sick. Luckily I have a sympathetic manager but I've had bad ones in the past! I'd call in sooner rather than later, especially if you've a shift that will need covering, leaving it till the last minute will just make things worse. Take a deep breath and ring, keep it short and simple, explain that you're not coming in as you're unwell, suffering with symptoms of stress and that you're speaking with/have spoken to the Dr and will let them know when you'll be back at work. Just be firm if they start moaning at you and reiterate that you'll be back as soon as your better. Good luck x
