Weeing in the theatre

Didimum · 30/11/2025 16:38

Went with my DCs to the theatre in London. There was a little boy seated in front of us with his mum. I think he was around 3-4yrs old. During the show, his mum had him wee in a bottle twice when he needed the bathroom. Trousers down and everything. They were otherwise fine during the show – not noisy or anything.

I get that it’s annoying having to take your kids to the loo during a show, but I would never have done this. Poor woman in front of them turned round and got a … well, a full on view.

YABU – I would do this
YANBU – I wouldn’t have

It's up to all of us to try to maintain some standards of decency and dignity.

Yet it’s unrealistic that everyone would actively complain. Everyone is different. That’s just life.

Omg. Definitely vile.

I was busy with my own kids and just wanted to watch the show.

I would have at least strongly complain during the interval.

It's not fair on my kids to have to put up with that either.

It’s ultimately the mum’s fault, not mine. My kids didn’t even notice.

I consider nose-picking to be indecent and disgusting. Would you call the usher for that, too?

I don't think anyone's saying it's your fault, I certainly wasn't when I said I would've told the usher in the interval. Definitely Mum's fault!

I didn't say it was your fault?

You asked if I would do this? Not only of course I would absolutely not, but i would complain to the theatre, because I find it completely unacceptable.

I am just answering your question.

do you really think peeing in a theatre is such a non-issue? Really??

Nope (please read the thread), I'm saying i wouldn't complain about it.

So, would you complain to the usher about some one picking their nose? It's also disgusting and indecent.

You asked me why I didn’t complain, and then when I answered you went on at me again about it. So yeah, it kind of seems like you’re annoyed at me about it. If you’re not, fair enough.

It's not the same as peeing in a bottle though, I'm not sure why you're comparing the two?

For what it's worth I wouldn't be thrilled about someone picking their nose next to me, no. If I didn't feel confident to ask them to stop I'd at the very least ask if it was possible to be moved.

There aren't special rooms set aside for doing that. There are special rooms set aside for private toileting.

Well, i disagree, i think you should go to the loo and blow your nose.

PansyPotter84 · 01/12/2025 19:30

When my DC were smaller but toilet trained we would offer pull-ups as “just in case” pants in situations where there might be a long wait for the toilet.

These included theatre, cinema, plane journeys and train journeys.

We took the view that a stress-free accident in private would be preferable to a very public accident with no pull-up or using a potty in public view.

Neither had a problem with it, and the understanding was that they should ask for the toilet and try to make it, but there wouldn’t be any trouble if they didn’t.

More often than not, both were able to make it to the toilet, but I think that letting them wear one on occasion made
the whole thing less stressful.

I remember one time when DD badly needed a wee just as soon as our plane was about to take off. By the time the seatbelt sign was off, she just told me “it’s OK, I don’t need to go anymore.”

It’s not indecent. It might be totally gross yes. But we teach kids about pants rules. We teach them that you go to the loo in private. There are laws against indecent exposure for adults. An adult can be fined for peeing in public. There are laws against sharing pictures of undressed minors. There are no laws for picking your nose even though I agree it’s gross.

Whatwouldnanado · 01/12/2025 19:53

What sort of person would ever think is the right thing to do. No respect whatsoever. Take them to the loo just before they go in, don’t stuff them with food and drink during the show then take them in the interval.

We obviously have very different sensitivities. A 4 year old kid having a wee is not something I particularly want to see, but it offends me far less than someone picking their nose. I wouldn't bother an usher for either scenario.

Jasrun · 01/12/2025 19:58

sorry I really didn't mean it as having a go at you, I find the peeing so shocking that it was more surprise that you didn't complain! I don't think I could have stand for it, it's disgusting.

Obviously not starting an embarrassing scene, but I couldn't help myself to complain during interval, that woman is bonkers.

I was taken aback and thought it was a pretty gross thing to do. But in the interval I was dealing with my own kids, getting them to the toilet in a long queue, one of them wanted popcorn, I was gasping for some water etc. I have twins, so it can be difficult being out with them in busy places. I wasn’t thinking of it at all during the interval. Then at the end of the show we had to hurry for our train as it’s an hour and a half travel home.

I was once waiting in the playground to pick up my son from school and another mum had her daughter with her, pulled down her trousers and pants and sat her on the drain so she could do a wee. Infront of all the parents and the windows backed onto the pick up playground so any children looking out would also of seen. They walk among us!!

How did we get onto airplanes ??

Sorry that was my fault. I had witnessed a similar scenario on an airplane this summer except it was a toddler taking a shit on a potty. I thought it was similar enough to draw a comparison but seems to have railroaded the thread slightly. Apologies.

soundsys · 02/12/2025 00:18

You really have to wonder how such people were raised. Grim!
