The cost of a passport is just stupid

SoloTripSoloVibes · 27/11/2025 09:14

That’s it really.

£94.50 for the actual passport, which is alright, I suppose.

£10 for the pictures because you need the fancy digital codes now and can’t just have a picture

£10 for guaranteed postage of the old one back to them, because of course they can’t just have a database that they update to say that one has expired or been replaced.

£115 in total! Bring on the days that it becomes totally digital.

But it’s not a tenner a year, is it? It’s £115 up front. You can’t pay it on a yearly basis

Save £1 per week for the next 10 years and you'll have more than enough saved when your next renewal comes up. (Likely enough for the renewal and a weekend break!)

SoloTripSoloVibes · 27/11/2025 09:49

It’s a book. You have to pay for visas for most places these days. You’re not able to fast track through passport control anymore.

The ultimate first world problem, what is your real issue ?

Just stay at home. And you're not going to win this debate you're ridiculous.

It’s just ludicrously overpriced. For such a small document. It’s a book.

So if passports were bigger in size that would be okay? 😂😅 it’s not about the size of them, it’s their function. They also last for a decade.

It’s a tax. That’s why it costs a lot.

Photos and postage are actually required.

But you can take your own photo and use standard post.

You can visit 115 countries without a visa if you have a British passport, 184 if visa on arrival, like the etsa or a landing card. There are 195 countries in the world.

Oh come on now. Don’t destroy the ops rants with actual accurate facts and figures!

Photo free on my phone, postage not needed as I renew online.

Justlostmybagel · 27/11/2025 09:53

Just be happy you don't have to apply from abroad. Now that is an expensive ball ache.

mummymeister · 27/11/2025 09:53

So you can afford a couple of hundred pounds for a holiday but not the cost of a passport that lasts 10 years? how many times in those 10 years will you use a passport? every year so £11 a journey on a holiday of a couple of hundred pounds? you arent paying for a little book though are you. you are paying for border control. you are paying for the fact that if you go somewhere risky and get stranded the embassy will help get you home. Its not a legal requirement if you dont want one dont have one.

I don't think the price of legal documents go on size!

the kids one is far worse value. about 80% of the cost and for the EU at least only valid for 4 and a half years.

SoloTripSoloVibes · 27/11/2025 09:33

But it’s not, because you still have to pay for visas etc

This is just part of the cost of travel. It’s a luxury activity. It’s like saying it’s not far to have to pay for pudding after your main course. Wanting to go to a country that requires a visa is like wanting a pudding. We really have to get out of this mindset of expecting everything to be subsidised.

Thechaseison71 · 27/11/2025 09:55

Simonjt · 27/11/2025 09:27

I took a photo on my phone for free, I also completed the forms on my phone, again, for free.

Same here

Sophiablue95 · 27/11/2025 09:56

To be honest it’s cheaper than a lot of countries. My XH’s not so strong passport costs the equivalent of £100 for 5 years.

purpleygrey · 27/11/2025 09:57

I actually this passports are reasonably priced.

granted you feel the hit when all the kids expire at the same time 🫣

SilverPink · 27/11/2025 09:58

Just wait until some councils in the UK start charging a tourist tax and then OP realises it will be just as expensive to holiday at home 🤣

Rather an important and official "book"
Lasts 10 years so not bad per year

Itsrainingloadshere · 27/11/2025 09:59

You can’t compare the cost of a passport with an equivalent ‘notebook’ from a shop. The cost goes towards all the security and checks involved in producing it and as others have said it lasts for 10 years and is £100 for all that time.
Just take the photo yourself, it even tells you if it’s suitable before you submit it so you can re do it if needed.

If you don’t like the cost then don’t get one. If it was massive, say A3 size would you think it was better value?
Honestly.

I wonder if the op moans about their abroad tourist/resort tax ?

Isthisreasonable · 27/11/2025 10:00

If you can't afford the passport, how can you afford to travel?

Also what are you reading if you think a passport is like a book? (Curious)

Pearlmaster500 · 27/11/2025 10:01

Not really when it lasts for 10 years plus you don’t have to pay for a photo you can just do it yourself

HelenaWaiting · 27/11/2025 10:02

I completely agree, OP. Passport Office employees should not be paid. They should work solely for the joy of it.

BarbaraKirksKaftan · 27/11/2025 10:02

£11.50 a year for a document that allows you to travel the world seems like a bargain to me.
