Hello lovely MNers,

What would you make of this email from a "higher-up" about this suggested Christmas Party "charity donation"? 🤔

(PS: O = Owner, OC = Owner's Child ; ...will be keeping an eye out in case there are any clarifying questions that arise 😄)

Company party piss-take??

I take it you don't actually work for the company?

Eh? What else does OP do for the company then <confused>

Isthisreasonable · 25/11/2025 08:38

I'd be tempted to donate a bag of chocolate coins (elf money) on the grounds that the company isn't paying workers enough to give back part of their wages as a charitable donation.

Or even suggest that all the company elves can do the same and deliver all the coins to the local food bank for a corporate photo op. Play them at their own game.

This reads like a weird cult message.

This mirrors what your government is doing to your country and the rest of the world when they get the chance. The richest fleecing the poorest and taking every opportunity to gain from their positions of power.
I don't really understand the social and workplace conventions so only you OP can decide whether this is necessary to keep your job and progress in the company. Either way, especially if it's not possible to opt out of this nonsense, I'd be looking elsewhere for work if at all possible.

I think I’d reply that I’m making my own usual charity donations, thanks.

No I wouldn't be doing this. Lots of people are struggling especially at this time of year. The nerve volunteering your money.

I've not contributed to collections for years. Years ago one couple had a moving in, engagement, wedding and birth of their child collection. I moved house and didn't get anything. I only got flowers when my DF died because my friend went mad.

I also haven't done Secret Santa for years. In one team a few of them did it and exchanged presents by a desk. How festive.

If you are in the US, this has significant tax implications, both for individuals who would lose the tax relief on any donation made and for the company who could offset the sum collected against their tax. Innocently ask how this is to be, or has been in the past, documented for IRS purposes.

Yes, thank you for making this point! I am indeed in the US, and especially looking at it through this lens the email does seem quite carefully worded...

Thank you, & I completely agree with you 🙏🏻our 2 party system is so terrifyingly broken over here and everyone seems to have lost their minds...people like me who vote to support independent candidates are ridiculed for "throwing the vote away" 😵‍💫 trust me, I and many of my peers know far better than to fall for the "America is the greatest/freest/etc nation in the world" rhetoric
