To think cats shouldn’t be allowed out without owners

The other thread about cats vs dogs has made me realise I’m not alone in my feelings about cats being allowed to roam freely, kill wildlife, and crap all over the place.

Why is it one rule for dogs and another for cats? It’s doesn’t make any sense really, when you think about it.

Shouldn’t the same rules apply: cats can be walked on leads and owners must pick up after them or risk fines etc?

New Zealand has issues with cats killing protected wildlife, as cats are not native to New Zealand.

i live in the fens. Every farm around here has a few cats. They’re generally semi feral and eat mice and rats. They are useful round here.

A working farm cat is a very different scenario to the domesticated cats in urban areas though.

I don’t own dogs or cats.

Cat poo is also a risk to humans, especially pregnant women and children.

They shouldn't eat it then.

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 24/11/2025 19:13

I haven’t got a cat but I think your post represents a fundamental misunderstanding of the feline species

ghostiewhisp · 24/11/2025 18:58

My cat doesn’t poo outside or kill things
he mostly sits watching for people walking past to ask for fuss
I think he’s secretly not a cat

He sounds very sweet.

Hmmm - to channel an idea posited in another thread - would you also subscribe to the idea that all boy cats should wear cat-adapted y-front type knickers to hide their balls from the view of unsuspecting passerby's - when being walked on leashes to restrict their roaming?

Oh no not again.
Soon we're going to have someone who says that a cat killed their grandma, another one that a chihuahua started a world conflict and someone else would come saying "yes but ny ASD child is scared of bees"

I'm sure all those concerned by the wildlife don't have a car or shop at Zara / Shein / Temu etc...

The impact of cats on the environment is negligible compared to overpopulation, 2 cars households, hen / stag dos in Croatia, eating bananas from Costa Rica all year round, tat in christmas socks at christmas etc...

Yes but my garden...Well all your precious wildlife poop too.
The mice you don't like: wildlife. The pigeon that poops on your precious car: wildlife. The spider you scream about: Wildlife. Slugs that destroy your plants, wildlife.

Stop with the faux concern. You just want to complain, and have zero nuisance from anything whilst having the comfort of living in a human settlement. Cats and dogs have been around for millenia they're not going anywhere.

This. I know OP - you and your kids stay inside forever. You will cause far more harm to the plant by going outside, so put your money where your mouth is.

He sounds very sweet.

He comes inside to use his tray and mostly watches bird TV on YouTube. Outside doesn’t have his Netflix shows

My question isn’t whether dogs should be allowed to roam freely. Obviously they shouldn’t.

But why should cats be allowed to shit everywhere, including my garden where my young children play?

They don’t just kill mice and rats. They kill millions of birds every year too.

It's nature. The circle of life.

Pigeonpoodle · 24/11/2025 19:16

RobinEllacotStrike · 24/11/2025 18:42

wrong.

Having grown up in a country where dogs were left to roam free - you know what happens? Dogs form packs. Those packs then roam the streets and go quite ferral. They can become very dangerous.

Cats would never do this.

Dogs are happier when well trained, with strong boundaries.

Cats don't care what you think.

I remember how they used to form packs in the dodgy areas of Coventry back in be 80s… the Council even employed a dog catcher!

SwedishEdith · 24/11/2025 19:16

Oh, I would love to be able to walk my cat. How sweet that would be if it were remotely possible for most cats.

DoBeDoBeDooo · 24/11/2025 19:17

Ddakji · 24/11/2025 19:11

Not everyone would be able to have a pet if they had to walk it, for example if they had limited mobility, but you would deny those people the joy of having a pet and how much owning a pet can improve mental health.

A quick google will show you that intensive farming methods are much much much worse for wildlife than cats.

How does keeping cats inside deprive anyone of ‘the joy of a pet’? There are plenty of house cats. There are also lots of other pets that don’t need walking.

Well um…

To think cats shouldn’t be allowed out without owners
cloudtreecarpet · 24/11/2025 19:18

What about urban foxes?
I get way more fox poo in my garden and I actually have a free roaming cat

Are you sure it's all cat poo that you are finding & complaining about OP?

DoBeDoBeDooo · 24/11/2025 19:19

PinkyFlamingo · 24/11/2025 19:15

It's nature. The circle of life.

It’s not nature though, is it?

We are not talking about wild cats, but cats that have been bred to be pets - nothing natural about that.

Yes, and I know which cat does it.

Never known anyone to have a pet fox.

I mean, lots of places have successfully stopped cats free roaming:

Parts of Australia, USA, New Zealand, Canada. There are restrictions in Germany, Switzerland, Netherlands, etc.

Why should pets be allowed to cause nuisance for anyone except their owners?

Why should they be allowed to kill wildlife?

Who decided free roaming is better for the cats wellbeing? Many cats are killed by traffic or by eating rodents that have been poisoned.

There were no domestic cats in the Americas before the Columbian Exchange. Nor were there any cats in Australia or New Zealand before Europeans arrived. Therefore their laws regarding an alien species are irrelevant in Europe where domestic cats have been present since the neolithic age, and European wildcats for much longer.

I was about to say the same thing. I am constantly cleaning up fox poo from my garden, and all the rubbish they bring including used babies nappies. My cat, on the other hand, poos in the same spot every day and at least I am not walking in it. I clean that up too otherwise I get flies, especially in the summer.

They don’t just kill mice and rats. They kill millions of birds every year too.

We don’t know that - there are other issues like climate change and imbalances

you definitely need cats or we’d all be overrun with mice indoors

MrDobbs · 24/11/2025 19:22

Owning a cat is basically an anti social activity. They shit in other people's gardens but don't shit in your own garden. Depositing shit regularly in other people's property would be considered highly anti social in any other circumstances.

Those young children might grow up to be serial killers or mass murderers, or perhaps they will urinate in public when drunk. You better keep them indoors, just in case.

Edited to add that now I think about it, young children seem to go for a wee or poo when in playgrounds etc quite frequently.

Yeah, I was surprised when I found out that cats roaming all over the place is common in the UK. Maybe it’s because US transportation can be so car-centric, but over here, it’s seen as borderline negligent to just let your cat out of the house to go wherever. That’s how they get run over by cars or picked off by larger wildlife (I realize the UK has different wildlife) or just inexplicably vanish.

I can’t blame anyone who’s pissed off by dead birds and cat feces on their property.

Edited

We get dead pigeons beheaded by a local hawk.

MrsApplepants · 24/11/2025 19:23

Can’t get worked up about this. Cats are cats. Sometimes they live inside, sometimes they go outside. Sometimes they kill birds. There are lots of birds. Sometimes they shit. That’s life. They are not dogs. Op needs to unclench.

Fleur405 · 24/11/2025 19:24

You should set up a cat training school. I’m sure it’ll be a wild success.

I'm obviously not talking about pet foxes, I .just pointing out that in many urban areas foxes poo in the gardens as much as cats do
I am a cat lover and owner and there is no way I would force my cat to stay inside, it's not natural for cats to do so.

And, as others have pointed out, we humans do way more damage to the environment on a daily basis than cats.
