To think cats shouldn’t be allowed out without owners

The other thread about cats vs dogs has made me realise I’m not alone in my feelings about cats being allowed to roam freely, kill wildlife, and crap all over the place.

Why is it one rule for dogs and another for cats? It’s doesn’t make any sense really, when you think about it.

Shouldn’t the same rules apply: cats can be walked on leads and owners must pick up after them or risk fines etc?

I checked with my cats and they both replied, in synch, "fuck you I won't do what you tell me".

Funny mine said the same 😂

Cats are protected by law and have the right to roam.
The RSPCA don’t advise walking cats on a harness/ lead as this causes them distress as they like to be in control of their surroundings.

Are cats in control of their surroundings when they get hit by a car or eat rat poison?

Completely agree OP. All pet owners should take responsibility for their animals, and that includes ensuring that your pet doesn’t cause issues for other people or wildlife.

Catios exist. People need to use them, unless they live on a farm.

Would you like to spend your life in a cage, which essentially is what a catio is.

That applies to all animals though. They need space, they like to roam, they'll be happiest outside. But we have to keep them contained for their own safety, and to prevent them being dangerous/a nuisance/interbreeding with native species.

This one species seems to be totally exempt from all those concerns. And no matter how much proof you offer to cat owners, they'll never accept it. It's a weird blind spot.

I think they're just lazy tbh. Can't be arsed to look after their pet properly.

Edited

Yeah, right.
Nothing to do with the species itself.

I'm not a lazy cat owner and I don't have a "blind spot" about it, I just have owned cats for years & understand them. That's all.

CrownCoats · 24/11/2025 20:04

IndigoIsMyFavouriteColour · 24/11/2025 18:43

You're basically asking for all cats to be housecats who are walked on leads everyday? I think this is a ludicrous suggestion as cats need to be free roaming for their health and for pest control. I can assure you that cats are not as nasty as rats, the rat population would increase exponentially if cats weren't around.

Pest control? You can’t be serious. Domestic cats decimate wildlife. They have been banned in several countries for good reason.

TooTiredMum2 · 24/11/2025 20:04

Apart from all the other reasons stated already….cats are obviously our superiors and the ones that secretly run this planet 🐈

DoBeDoBeDooo · 24/11/2025 20:04

SassyPearlEagle · 24/11/2025 19:43

I don't have any sympathy for cat owners who cry after they've been run over/disappeared/poisoned/any other gruesome fate, either.

If you release any animal to wander off, these things may happen. Pretty obvious. You chose not to keep them safely contained.

I disagree with this. I don’t want to see any animal suffer a horrible death and it’s obvious people love their pets. But evidence suggests house cats are just as happy as outdoor cats, with much less risk. So it does seem non-sensical to me expose them to that risk.

Are they really though? Most dogs would arguably be a lot healthier and happier if they were allowed to roam freely too.

Let's do that then.

Are cats in control of their surroundings when they get hit by a car or eat rat poison?

Surely you would be happy if either of those things happened to the cats who poo in your garden?
Why the faux concern?

Crambino · 24/11/2025 20:05

DoBeDoBeDooo · 24/11/2025 18:42

My question isn’t whether dogs should be allowed to roam freely. Obviously they shouldn’t.

But why should cats be allowed to shit everywhere, including my garden where my young children play?

They don’t just kill mice and rats. They kill millions of birds every year too.

I do understand your frustration, to a point,
but to be honest gardens are full of shit anyway. Bird shit, bat shit, frog shit, fox shit, hedgehog shit… Looking out for 💩 is part of spending time in the great outdoors, gardens can’t be sterilised, kids just have to remember to wash their hands after being outside.

Kalettesarethebest · 24/11/2025 20:05

tell me you’re not a cat person without saying so!!

That’s quite a wild assumption to make!

Sadly you’ll get slated by the cat brigade on here and the fact by law cats are “free to roam”. But for us, we actively opt not to have pets, yet all year round I’m picking up manky cat shite in my front and back garden, all the while my neighbours don’t have to pick up after their own pets. I think it’s absolutely gross and I can’t understand why it’s just accepted.

SassyPearlEagle · 24/11/2025 20:06

It amuses me when cat owners just repeat "right to roam" like a religious mantra. No thought behind it.

Imagine if it wasn't cats, but some other species.

"Goats have a right to roam! Suck it up and deal with it."

Millions of goats trotting around towns, climbing over cars and walls, destroying gardens, crapping, fighting, bleating loudly... but nothing can be done. Their owners legally don't need to contain them, so everyone else must be inconvenienced.

'....evidence suggests'?

Can you please reference that evidence? Also the method used to assess the relative happiness over a period of time of a statistically-significant number of cats?

Bagsintheboot · 24/11/2025 19:04

Really? I can't find anything about this and the guidance still seems to say if you run over a cat you don't (legally) have to report it.

You’re right it hasn’t. I believe the issue has been raised in parliament but no decision has been made.

If this is the level of ridiculous argument we are at I am bowing out of this one.

Off to spend time with my lovely cat - if it's in of course...

OonaStubbs · 24/11/2025 20:09

Cats keep the bird population down. Without them the bird population would surge and that would cause problems.

Sorry op but I chucked at this. My little Maltese wouldn't last half an hour if left to 'roam free,' never mind be happy doing it. She's only happy by my side.

Scottishlass10 · 24/11/2025 20:12

Well I’ll take advice from the vet rather than some randomer on the internet, My vet always says how lovely it is when she sees a cat that’s allowed to be a cat!

Yes, it would be an absurd situation, wouldn't it? ;)

I do hope your lovely cat is alive and well, not smushed on a road somewhere.

Oh a cat bashing thread - Marvellous!

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 24/11/2025 20:14

OP. I can (and do) make my own risk assessment concerning my cats freedom to come and go outside as they please. My cats have a bloody great life. And (like 78% of cat households) they have a litter tray in the house which they come in to use.
I also don't give a flying fuck about the law in Australia because In the UK cats are allowed to roam and that's where I live.

And anyone who claims I don't care for my cats, simply because I let them out to enjoy life to the full, is talking utter fucking shite.

Here's a picture for you.

Seriously?

Dogs used to roam free in a lot of countries and it was awful. They are pack animals. My mum said it was terrifying. They also dont bury their poo. They litetally just go wherever.

Gettingdressed · 24/11/2025 20:14

Another cat bashing thread…..

uk is full of Victorian built homes - terraces….let’s take the pet cats away and see what happens to the rodent population shall we?!

honestly humans have used cats for thousands of years for this reason!
