To get so irritated with DH over things like this?

More of a vent but … is it just me?

I am cooking dinner, our children (5 and 2) are fairly calm and DH suddenly goes outside. Emerges with a load of outside lights and starts putting them up. Children get all hyper and excited and want to join in; coats and shoes and now won’t come in for dinner.

It would have been fine if he’d waited twenty minutes Confused

(I know I’m going to get hate but honestly … And I don’t like Christmas lights up yet!)

Nope, you won't get hate from me. That's really fucking annoying.

pizzaHeart · 23/11/2025 17:11

It’s not about Christmas light at all, I bet you would be the same if he was doing up a paddling pool.
He needs to think how his actions might affect others. It’s just a grown up thing.

If I don’t get respect for the work I have put into making the dinner I will simply stop doing it. This includes not starting distracting or time consuming tasks before the meal.

Anyone who doesn't get anoyed over little things like this with the person they are raising a child with is probably a liar.

YANBU at all, sometimes I wonder what goes on in their heads when they do this.

Pollqueen · 23/11/2025 17:34

Not you, but HIBU as it's still November

Tryingatleast · 23/11/2025 17:35

Is he Phil Dunphy? If so it’s ok!!

Notsurewhatisnormalanymore · 23/11/2025 17:37

Nope, not just you, really annoying! It’s a quick conversation isn’t it?!?
’Shall I get the lights out?’
’Would you mind waiting until we’ve eaten, maybe next weekend would be better?’
A general agreement is then made. They make more mess than anything, and I bet you had to get roped in at some point!
Dislike them all.

Thank you for validating me! It’s a lovely activity - NOW! DH is so annoying at times. To be fair he’s a lovely man but just … once he gets something in his head it’s like trying to stop an incoming wave. Fil is the same. Sigh.

Like a big kid himself!
Fortunately, he seems mostly lovely. 👍
From another bucket, my husband (75) recently climbed up on the roof (to repoint a chimney stack), put sound cancelling earphones on, listened to a book and then complained about me forgetting him with a cup of tea.
He wouldn't hear anything at that point. 😄

Why do they choose these moments to do these things!?
