To not want to be naked in sauna

I’m going to a fancy hotel in Germany with an amazing spa but I’ve just found out the spa is textile free which means no clothes whatsoever allowed. I’m really uncomfortable with this as I’ve had a mastectomy and my reconstruction is pretty ugly. Even without that, I’d feel weird being naked with strangers.

I would feel uncomfortable about that too op. It’s just not something we’re used to in the UK. I would try to go with an open mind. You might find that after the initial shock, you adjust because everyone else is doing the same. If not then you tried.

It's polite to tag folk when you quote them, what's your point though?
Us Brits are prudes compared to lots of other nations when it comes to nakedness.

I was putting a pp straight as they were trying to tell me someone else had made a comment that was made by yourself.

I’m sorry to here that you needed a mastectomy and understand your feelings ❤️

Having said that in recent years l’ve seen people topless on the beach who have had mastectomies, l think it’s lovely that they have shown the world tthat they intend to carry on. Remember too that visibility in a sauna is limited. Best wishes OP x

My comments are not being addressed to you in general, however I've responded where I felt necessary. This thread isn't just aout how you might feel.

Aware of that, thanks. I too have responded where I felt necessary.

I absolutely agree with this.

I tried this recently on holiday and tbh it was a bit much for me, but if I'd have had someone with me it would have been fine.

I don't think the perving opportunities of naked people vs people in 20cm2 of tight fabric are really all that different. And it's a culture of not staring or perving.

You're not going to change the rules. You can only decide if you'll join in or not.

PeonyRose8 · 24/11/2025 10:06

This reminds me of going to an outdoor pool in Germany on a school exchange! Not only naked but they embrace their hairiness too- even the women!

GehenSieweiter · 24/11/2025 10:44

godtierKaren · 24/11/2025 07:23

And how exactly would they police that?

Oh I don't know, maybe they could put signs up and folk could, you know, respect them.

I was answering a question you asked me.

Do they have single sex sessions or an option to book it solely for personal use?

I read the sex sessions (for singles!) booking question wrongly ...

German attitudes to hairiness appeared to have changed somewhat - many men actually shave a lot of their body hair, so I'm told.

You are kind of forced if you want to use a gym or swim centre. Of course you can wriggle around under a towel or robe but most people don't bother & just use the toilet cubicles creating queues.

That's the reason why clothing shops ditched open change rooms years ago because they understood many people are uncomfortable publicly changing.

Well yes, in countries where it’s the norm. Same as in the UK, a German would be “forced” to wear swimwear when they might prefer or expect to be nude. Nobody is forced to go to other countries if you don’t like or want to partake in the cultural practices there.

Calliopespa · 24/11/2025 10:51

I've only done it once. It was actually Switzerland not Germany.

I was still at the point of having arranged my towel to sit on and not having fully discarded the towel wrapped round me when a man who was sitting fully naked with his legs apart farted loudly. I was out of there in no time.

I think these things just aren't for all of us op.

StarlightLady · 24/11/2025 11:25

Being naked in a sauna is one thing. Farting loudly with legs apart is another. The 2 do not equate together.

That’s because (unlike my typing skills) saunas are hot 🤣.

Natsku · 24/11/2025 12:08

Farting in the sauna is very much taboo, the sort of thing you warn children not to do or the saunatonttu will get angry, and if he gets angry he might burn the sauna down (other things you warn them against doing in the sauna are arguing, swearing, and pissing on the stove)

It was just so incredibly disgusting: the heat, the claustrophobic space, all sitting looking at each other, not to mention the slightly wet sound of the sweat in the mix.

I can't actually shake the memory. You have to laugh to stop yourself crying.

I mean I guess it might have been accidental, but still.

Perhaps try reading the comments and which poster made the comments - they were two different quotes you highlighted and made by two different people.

Even if it was accidental at the very least they ought to apologise profusely and open the door for a while to ease the smell.
