To think some men actually hate kids because they can’t stand not being the centre of attention?

There’s a specific kind of man - often narcissistic, controlling or image-obsessed, who genuinely struggles when a child enters the picture. Not because he “doesn’t like nappies” or “isn’t hands-on” but because he’s jealous.

Jealous of the attention.
Jealous of the mother-child bond.
Jealous of not being catered to first.

I’ve seen men get nasty, withdrawn or downright cruel once a baby arrives, not just to their partner but to the child too. They resent how the child changed the dynamic and how much space they take up, emotionally and physically. And yes, many women don’t see this side of them until they become fathers.

AIBU to think some men don’t “dislike kids”, they actually hate not being the priority, and it comes out in chilling ways once they’re no longer the star of the show?

Absolutely. I’ve seen many selfish men willingly create children thinking that it will enhance their lives, make them look good …….. without ever considering that having children mostly involves giving and not receiving.

As the saying goes, men love
women, women love children, children love hamsters.

YANBU. Sadly.

Yup, exDP started his campaign of domestic abuse when DC1 was 9 weeks old. Only abused me though.

Zempy · 22/11/2025 21:24

True. But my mother also reacted like this.

SomethingBlues · 22/11/2025 21:32

I’d also say this applies to some women too. The only person I know who actively hates children wants to be the centre of attention most of the time and is also really really lazy. She can’t be bothered to put the effort in with children, even just talking to them sensibly - she just cba

That was exactly what I was going to say. It’s not just men.

Odd thread. I mean, there are also men that murder people and make lampshades from their skin. 🤣 Not sure why you'd focus on a sub category of weirdo.

Outside of the above example about kids, I'd say men are far less attention seeking than women. Some of my male friends seem to have a full time job keeping the mardy girlfriend happy!

PollyBell · 22/11/2025 22:03

Then why on earth to women keep on breeding with them, and of course what is in front of them as they themselves need the attention and put theit own needs before any children they have

I think it is safe to say therefore both parents can be considering hating children

Titasaducksarse · 22/11/2025 22:11

Yes.
Also I've observed 'cuckoo in the nest' syndrome re stepsons and stepfathers many many times.

My EXH is one of these men. He was the one pushing for us to have kids, then couldn't cope with not being the centre of attention when DD was born. Then started the pressure again for a second. I said no.

Women wouldn't keep breeding if they hated children

I wonder if anyone in social services says different
