Things to do for Boxing Day birthday in the North West

Hi
Young adult son’s birthday is Boxing Day and I would like to find something to do for him that day. He’s always so brilliant at fixing things up for us all.
We live in the North West of England so could travel to Manchester, Liverpool, into north Wales or down to Stoke area.
But (and I do understand) everything seems to be closed. Art galleries (he loves them) are all shut. So are escape rooms. Theatres all seem to be panto (beyond that!). No football games. Spa day is too dear. “Walks with the dogs” etc is not his thing and the weather could be awful.
I’m not looking for a massive event. Just some kind of activity and then lunch with family.
I am endlessly scouring Google but wonder if you have heard of anything.
Much appreciated x

When I was little (aeons ago) we used to go up on Dartmoor on Boxing day to watch the Hunt set off. So, if you feel like watching a politically incorrect activity I think they still do it all over the country - but without the participation of the foxes.
Sorry, that's the only specific Boxing Day thing I recall.

Would there be some sort of racing on? Horse, speedway? Or how about ice skating?

We bought a Mystery Guide for Liverpool - it’s like a treasure hunt, where you have to follow clues etc. You get to see parts of the city you would never otherwise find, and you can stop off for hot chocolate, or an alcoholic drink, etc en route. Lots of fun exploring, puzzling and enjoying each others’ company!

There is a temporary ice rink in Liverpool that seems to be open on Boxing Day.
