Who are people who find Christmas offensive

Blopi · 22/11/2025 06:43

It really boils my piss when organisations curtail Christmas stuff as it may offend people.

Who are these people who find Christmas offensive? In my life I have worked and met people from various religions, cultures and countries. NOT one found Christmas and things that go with it. I didn’t work with Jehovah Witnesses but they don’t get offended. Most said they decorated their homes, wore Xmas jumpers and ate food which was suitable or tailored to their religion. Those who didn’t decorate their homes love seeing trees lit up.

Who is offended? Come on, post some examples of people being offended by Christmas.

I think the woke community is offended on behalf of others-thus we have Tesco selling Evergreen trees, Sainsbury's and Tony Chocoloni (sp) selling Countdown calendars and Greggs selling Festive Bakes.

These things used to have Christmas in their description.

There are many other examples and it won't take you long to look.

So, some big businesses clearly do think some will be offended by the word, Christmas: whether this is due to their own research or them simply being woke twats is not known but I suppose the answer to that is discoverable too.

Here's another example (Winter Market rather than Christmas Market):

https://www.southbankcentre.co.uk/activity/winter-market/

Edited

are they not calling it a winter market to extend the length of time they can have it??? would be a bit weird to go to a christmas market on 3rd January!

most of this stuff is about retailers/organisers having events that are winter/festive not christmas. if an event happens in November or January why are people outraged at it not being branded "christmas"?

SheepShankers · 22/11/2025 08:56

I’m old enough to remember the outrage Birmingham City Council caused nearly 30 years ago with their “Winterval”, causing rhe permanently narrow minded to screech about how “they” want to cancel Christmas.

In reality, it was the city council trying to get as much value from the huge bill of putting up and taking down the lights. They thought it would be better value to have the lights up longer, to cover more events through the season and to attract more people into the city.

But for some reason it sent angry people into a tizz claiming Christmas has been cancelled

Depends what you mean by 'banned'. In a widespread way, obviously not, no. I'm certainly not claiming it has been.

The claim is usually about orgs changing how they term things. I'd be amazed if not a single org ever has told their staff to avoid saying Christmas.

We're getting a bit off-topic here, but I maintain that in almost everything to do with human society 'not one instance ever' is a huge claim. At least for things where the population is enormous (all orgs, of any size, at any point in history). The obvious reply is your one, i.e. well find one instance then, but that only works if we can search all instances. But clearly this isn't one of those cases.

These type of threads often hint or outright mention banning Christmas. OP angrily talking about people taking offence seems (to me) pretty clear if it is offensive then it wouldn't be used at all.

Every example cited on this thread so far frequently uses the word Christmas on their websites and/or in their literature.

Personally don't see a problem with calling something a Winter market if that is when it's held. Not seen any evidence that any organisation has done this and not had other Christmas events.

Tesco are not selling :

Xmas trees - they’re selling Evergreen Trees
Xmas cake - they’re selling Iced Top Fruit Cake

I dare say that if sales drop on those items this year they will label them differently next year. Other supermarkets are readily available

CurlewKate · 22/11/2025 08:57

MidnightPatrol · 22/11/2025 08:54

So! I always thought this whole debate was just utter bollocks until last year when I managed to offend two people by asking them what their plans were over the Christmas break, and they both reacted badly and made it clear they were offended to be asked.

Both I think were Muslims, and I suppose saw me as asking how they were celebrating a religious holiday of another denomination. They weren’t anyone I know personally or worked with - think person working in a shop I was chatting to level of interaction.

I’m not even religious, to me Christmas is basically ‘the 1-2 weeks in December when everything grinds to a halt and most people get time off work’.

TBF I don’t think it will impact my asking people exactly the same question this year, if you live in the UK you’re going to be asked about your Christmas plans, it’s part of the culture here (rather than a religious festival per se). And every other person I’ve ever encountered who is actively another religion and discussed Christmas seems to still celebrate it in some format just for the fun of it… usually to the extent of buying presents, a tree etc.

I do however try and remember now to comment when it’s other people’s religious holidays - as I think it’s nice to do so.

Edited

How did they demonstrate their offence?
it’s also important to remember that there are knob heads in all races and religions. And I know Christians who are offended by Halloween. There was a family in my ds’s class who wanted Harry Potter removed from the class library.

Yes but it isn't it odd how these things never occurred to them say two decades or less ago?

I find it odd at any rate.

One of your other accounts has already posted this bullshit and been laughed off the thread...

🙄 What bullshit is that? My opinion that it’s actually not Muslims who are offended, but the professionally offended lefties who like to patronise Muslims and others by speaking on their behalf. Ususally wide of the mark too. If you think it’s Muslims and others who are the ones saying they’re offended, then that’s up to you, but I don’t agree as has been said on here by others, I work with alongside other religious groups, and they aren’t offended by Xmas at all……..stop being patronising and trying to speak on their behalf…

Please could you let me know how I can become a member of the Woke Community? I didn't know there was an actual organisation you could join. Thanks...

Xmas trees - they’re selling Evergreen Trees
Xmas cake - they’re selling Iced Top Fruit Cake

This is what my dh heard so he went to Tesco to check for himself and said its bs Christmas is everywhere in the store . I have also seen their Christmas magazine ( has the word Christmas all over it)

5128gap · 22/11/2025 09:00

This time of year is simply about spending lots of money to have a nice time in winter. It has next to no link in most people's minds with the birth of Jesus, so I personally don't think it matters what they call it.
Retailers deciding they'd hit a wider market, or employers deciding to call the annual piss up a name that's more reflective of the completely secular thing it is, is not the same as a group of mythical people 'taking offence' at Christmas. You may be able to provide links of people doing away with the word, but I challenge you to provide one where another faith has called for it to be banned because they're 'offended'.
If you want to debate whether organisations should drop the religious link, fair enough. But stick to the facts rather than extrapolate that people are driving this because they are offended.

sweetpickle2 · 22/11/2025 09:01

I like it when people like the OP think everyone else is a delicate snowflake when they're the ones getting their knickers in a bunch and frantically trawling the internet to find 11 year old news articles.

It's not the left though, is it? The only offence I ever see is from people being outraged about nonexistant banning of Christmas. I never actually see anyone, leftie, woke or whatever, wanting Christmas banned.

It's another thing stoked up by right wing media.

Oh yeah of course, as I say it’s the first time I had ever witnessed it ever, in my entire life. I think that’s probably why I was so blasé in asking, I’ve never encounter any of the apparent ‘offended by Christmas’ stuff the tabloids like to trot out.

I can’t remember exactly, but very much ‘why are you asking me if I would be celebrating Christmas? I quite clearly will not’.

Agreed people will find anything to be offended by.

https://www.southbankcentre.co.uk/activity/winter-market/

That isn't an example. A Christmas market would be one specifically aimed at Christmas, selling potential presents, toys, decorations, Christmas cards etc. The South Bank market does much more than that, and lasts longer than the Christmas period.

JHound · 22/11/2025 09:07

I think some Councils do try to amend wording around Christmas, and have actually admitted they do it for reasons of inclusivity. It’s a shame because many Muslims and other faiths do actually enjoy Christmas celebrations, and take part. I just feel others make decisions for them because they think they feel excluded, when mostly that’s not the case at all.

sashh · 22/11/2025 09:08

Does anyone else remember a thread from a Jewish convert? It was her first Xmas as a Jew (I mean the time of year not a celebration)

She had asked some people round on the 25th December, everyone she asked, including her rabbi had made plans to do something.
