Who are people who find Christmas offensive

Blopi · 22/11/2025 06:43

It really boils my piss when organisations curtail Christmas stuff as it may offend people.

Who are these people who find Christmas offensive? In my life I have worked and met people from various religions, cultures and countries. NOT one found Christmas and things that go with it. I didn’t work with Jehovah Witnesses but they don’t get offended. Most said they decorated their homes, wore Xmas jumpers and ate food which was suitable or tailored to their religion. Those who didn’t decorate their homes love seeing trees lit up.

Tesco are not selling :

Xmas trees - they’re selling Evergreen Trees
Xmas cake - they’re selling Iced Top Fruit Cake

I think you’ll find that Tesco are selling Christmas trees

My pet hate is "Happy Holidays". WTF is that all about?

Just another Americanism afaik.

Blopi · 22/11/2025 09:20

Normally I can Google better results (ie more recent)

One thing I hate is the phrase Happy Holidays.

Happy holidays is just an Americanism that has crept over here because of our exposure to it in films etc.

I always assumed that it was intended to cover both Christmas and Hanukkah because they tend to fall at around the same time, but I could be wrong.

I don't think anyone is actually offended by Christmas, and I have never come across a single organisation in real life that thinks it can't talk about Christmas because that might offend someone. However, I have come across a lot of right-leaning people over the years who like to claim that they aren't allowed to talk about Christmas. I draw my own conclusions from that.

PandoraSocks · 22/11/2025 09:28

@Hickorydickorydock74 chocolate day instead of Easter? Where does your husband work?

Minjou · 22/11/2025 09:29

Blopi · 22/11/2025 07:00

If you read my op there are organisations that don’t do Christmas as they think they are offending others.

My friend’s late husband was Muslim and they do pigs in blankets - they call them chicks in blankets. Chicken sausages with turkey rashers.

Are there though? Or have you just believed lies?

U do make a good point. I'm sure theres the odd person but I doubt ppl in their droves are writing to their kids schools or work places or even to their local council to say this outloud and if anyone is offended then they should be told that's exclusively their own problem and not the rest of ours. I think wokeness in itself is the problem more then the fictionally person that apparently is offended by Christmas. 🎄🤶🤶🎄🤶🎄 merry Christmas everyone. Xxx

These type of threads often hint or outright mention banning Christmas. OP angrily talking about people taking offence seems (to me) pretty clear if it is offensive then it wouldn't be used at all.

Every example cited on this thread so far frequently uses the word Christmas on their websites and/or in their literature.

Personally don't see a problem with calling something a Winter market if that is when it's held. Not seen any evidence that any organisation has done this and not had other Christmas events.

I also don’t see it as a massive problem. But I don’t think it’s entirely invented either. And I do think there’s an asymmetrical emphasis on Christian symbols being the ones that should be toned down.

This is a New York example so not directly relevant, but I personally have had experience booking a Christmas event for a group of colleagues (not directly a company event) and being told by one venue that I mustn’t call it a Christmas event and should remember that not everyone is Christian. I found that strange/amusing because: I. I think no one in the group was Christian, II. that same group is extremely international and celebrates many cultural events. I just can’t imagine any venue would ever admonish someone for trying to book an Eid event, Hannukah, CNY, etc.

Lifelover16 · 22/11/2025 09:31

The winter festival was originally Yule to celebrate the end of the dark winter days and coming of the light. A beautiful celebration in metaphorical terms whatever name it is given.

CurlewKate · 22/11/2025 09:33

The only time I have ever come across Easter being….curtailed…in school is when there were a group of Witnesses in DD’s class and the Easter Egg hunt was renamed a Spring Treasure Hunt.

Which organisations specifically have shunned Christmas? We get this shite every single year and everyone gets very offended at the thought of organisations trying to avoid offending people but it’s always so vague. Usually someone getting irate because some underpaid marketing twonk called their client’s cake bites ‘Festive Fancies’ for the alliteration which sets off a tirade of ‘but WHERE is the Christmas in that?!’

I really like Happy Holidays - I went to school with peeps from all sorts of religions and as well as Christmas, there’s also Diwali at the end of October-time and Hanukkah a little before Christmas…it all kind of smooshes together and we all celebrated all of them. Happy Holidays covers all of it.

This is not true. Another way of saying this is you are lying (for some reason).
I've just checked online - every single Christmas tree they are selling is listed as "x foot Christmas tree". The various cakes are not referred to as "Christmas cake", but they sell many different kinds and, as PP said, it would be confusing if they were all just called Christmas cake. The packaging and decoration makes it clear what they are. The Christmas puddings are labelled as such.
It's people like you that perpetuate these tedious lies.

Allswellthatendswelll · 22/11/2025 07:20

Outrageous. What would Baby Jesus say? The Bible is full of Christmas trees and fruit cakes.

Even if it was actually a thing then putting evergreens in the house predates Christianity anyway.

Edited

Actually it doesn’t. In the UK Queen Charlotte first introduced the Christmas tree in 1800. It was further popularised in the 1840s by Prince Albert, who was German, and brought trees to Windsor Castle. Pictures of the royal family around their tree were widely published and made it fashionable for other families to adopt the tradition.

Hons123 · 22/11/2025 09:39

You can't deny that this has been happening for quite a while 'Season's greetings', etc. So there must be an agenda, it can't be happening by itself. We shall probably never know, like with many things that are happening in front of our very own eyes (and which are not a spontaneous occurrence, obviously).

CurlewKate · 22/11/2025 09:39

We never actually have an actual written example, do we. There would be emails, memos, newsletters. But there never, ever are.

thepariscrimefiles · 22/11/2025 09:39

Dollymylove · 22/11/2025 07:33

Nobody in the UK is offended by Christmas. The leftie Corbyn shagger types perpetuate the myth, trying to divide the country. It doesnt work. Why would other religious want it banned? Its the most lucrative time of the year for many, particularly the business people

It's much more likely to be the fascist-adjacent Farage shagger types that perpetuate this myth every year to try and pretend that the UK is headed towards Sharia Law and the banning of Christmas to stir up division and hatred of anyone who isn't white British.

BeanQuisine · 22/11/2025 09:40

It used to be the case that shops and businesses would be castigated by some Christians for "commercialising Christmas", but now they tend to be castigated (presumably by the same Christians) if they avoid referring to it as Christmas. So clearly they can't win with that demographic - "moaners gonna moan".

Me, I'm an atheist and I enjoy the Christmas season regardless of the religious stuff, which is easy enough to ignore. I imagine vast numbers of people feel much the same way as me in the modern world.

BunnyLake · 22/11/2025 09:40

I can give an example.
Birmingham City Council.
The Christmas Market in the city ( rubbish though it is) is now officially called the Winter Market.
The Christmas lights in the town flash “ Happy Holidays”
iThere must be some very offended councillors.

You sure about that?

lolly427 · 22/11/2025 09:43

DH used to design the Christmas cards for his company and at some point was told he was no longer allowed to use the word Christmas. I would have thought that was quite common among companies. I can see both sides of the argument for/against it tbh.
