To ask for help to wash my wedding dress… 15 years after my wedding!!!!

I moved overseas immediately after my wedding and my dress was left with family. I have just realised, it was never cleaned after the day.

Is this salvagable??? Or is it too late 😭😭

It’s a sort of taffeta dress with lots of beads. Not sure if that’s relevant.

I have no answers, but this is my level of procrastination. Hats off to you.

MatildaTheCat · 21/11/2025 18:38

You take it to a specialist dry cleaner surely?

ExtraOnions · 21/11/2025 18:38

What is it made of ? Unless it’s made out of paper … or Miss Haversham has been wearing it, it will be fine .. take it to the dry cleaners

There is a lady on Instagram who restores old wedding dresses and regularly washes them in her bath. I will see if I can find her page for you.

CluelessAboutBiology · 21/11/2025 18:39

Does it even need to be cleaned? Are you planning to wear it again?

Haha!!!! I am a procrastinator, but in the midst of marrying and relocating, I thought someone else (my mum) had sorted it. Sadly not. 🙈

Turn it inside out & wash it on a silk/delicate setting with gentle spin.

Why do u need to wash it

Jopo12 · 21/11/2025 21:14

What's up with it? Does it smell? Is it dirty? Just chill and stick it on vinted for £50.

Definitely not one for the washing machine then!

Have a look at Nancy Birtwistle on Instagram, she has done wedding dresses several times and did a prom dress this week.

gingercat02 · 21/11/2025 21:19

Mine got red wine and grass stains. All very innocent btw. I took it to the dry cleaners when we came back from our honeymoon.
They rang to say it said no dry cleaning and do not wash, so what do they do.
I said just wash it. It was fine 🙂

@ForLilacLemuras @Fontysaid, you can wash it at home. Turn the dress inside out, put it inside a duvet cover to protect it further (fasten the duvet cover so it's closed) and wash on a cool wash. Hang to dry and iron/ steam. Dry cleaning can ruin wedding dresses, the chemicals can melt embellishments (I managed a laundry, we washed a LOT of wedding dresses and never had any problems)
