To warn you about amazon selling fake products?

Not a 3rd party, not amazon marketplace but Amazon directly.

I always assumed buying from Amazon was safe, have used them for years as long as you don't use 3rd party sellers.

I bought a kettle from 'The Ninja Shop' on amazon. The photos are stainless steel. The description says stainless steel and a plastic kettle arrived.

All the reviews have this same plastic kettle. Some complaints about it.

I contacted Ninja who confirmed that the kettle is an amazon exclusive but should be stainless steel and confirmed they do NOT sell plastic kettles.

So amazon themselves are selling this 'exclusive ' kettle that is not made by ninja.

They could be from anywhere and be a huge fire risk!

I will not be buying any Ninja or electrical items from Amazon again as you have no idea what you may be getting!

(Yes btw i do already have a thread about this kettle but that thread was about the discrepancy in the item recieved, I am starting this thread based on communication from Ninja confirming the kettle is not theirs)

I have no idea how Amazon got to be seen as a legitimate shopping website, let alone such a successful one with its own telly ads.

Even browsing the site feels grotty, scammy and dubiously legal.

I bought a bunch of name brand cosmetics from different approved third-party sellers as well as Amazon itself. The ones that weren't knock-offs were ancient deadstock which was dangerously out of date. They all looked like they'd been fished out the back of a damp haybarn (and probably had).

I have a small add on to this post that isn't about Amazon but is a warning to hopefully stop others getting screwed.

The shop Online Home Shop, AVOID! they have no contact number, will send the wrong items and not issue refunds, the quality is diabolical and emails bounce back saying undeliverable. Dont get scammed this Christmas people! luckily my bank (monzo) allows chargebacks, but I don't want anyone else going through this! Hope you get your refund sorted OP & thanks for the warning.

bottledboot · 21/11/2025 13:37

I try & not use Amazon now which isn’t that hard because so much of Amazon is tat or fake.

Oh my sister bought something from them and had an awful time with them and the thing she ordered was tatt.

Isithalftermyet · 21/11/2025 13:45

Yep - Amazon is becoming un-usable. Enshitification. I hardly order anything from them now because you can't be sure it isn't a fake, even if branded.

And I'm sick of having to scroll through pages of cheap Chinese rubbish with made up brand names to get to the branded item I'm looking for - and now it seems like you can't trust the branded item to be real.

I was looking for something specific yesterday. Saw a product I know to be £200 everywhere else advertised for £20. Clearly whatever you receive isn't going to be the real item even though the photo shows the real item.

JaninaDuszejko · 21/11/2025 13:46

I've just checked the trustpilot score for Amazon, it's shockingly bad! Never thought to look before.

@NinjaWhat are you sure that message is from Ninja? They can't spell 'unable'! Grin

You should have seen the shocking basic grammatical errors i got from passport office in an email. I had to phone them directly as i could not believe it had been sent by a governmsnt body and guess what, it was.😂

Do you think it is AI they are using?

NoNotTodayThanks · 21/11/2025 13:56

A lot of things on Amazon are fake, things like oral b toothbrush heads, cosmetics and perfume. I've noticed that a lot of electrical and pet products on there look like they're from Temu and probably wouldn't pass safety tests, so you definitely have to be cautious buying on Amazon.

Bettysnow · 21/11/2025 13:58

I bought yumove dog tablets for joint health and received an email from amazon some months later to say sorry they were fakes.
They refunded my money bit by that stage the dog had taken they all. He was fine but who knows what was in them?

Nifty50something · 21/11/2025 14:03

I never buy anything edible from Amazon (for humans or pets) nor any skincare, makeup, or electrical items, nor any jewelry (as you never know what metal you're going to get). Basically nothing that could be poisonous or dangerous.

I'm so glad people are catching on to the ubiquitous fakes on Amazon. I've been bleating on about it for years but no one would listen.

ForFunnyOliveEagle · 21/11/2025 14:31

I bought ninja utensils on amazon and they were fake and an urban decay pallet claiming to be real and was fake- be wary

I’d also avoid buying anything OHS from Debenhams too, had nothing but issues, going on 3 weeks for a refund of a faulty item.
actually just Debenhams in general are terrible now as they are run by the same people as boohoo/sports direct etc

That's unfair, it's clearly just a typo in a chat message.

I got a seed catalogue with a typo in large print on the front page. Some poor sod is probably having their arse kicked over that.

They have toothbrush heads that are listed as Oral B and then in the description it says “compatible with Oral B” which means they are not genuine Oral B brush heads.

I have bought Elemis products from Amazon and they have always been genuine.

Spanador · 21/11/2025 14:47

Coffeeishot · 21/11/2025 12:36

Oh I don't even think that chat is actually Ninja 😂

Amazon is absolute garbage i would never buy branded from them, since I got a tiny rucksack that was supposed to be a good brand, I asked for a refund which Amazon gave but they didn't want the tiny rucksack back!

It's definitely Ninja, it's got the blue tick and when you go on that account it takes you to their genuine verified Facebook page

They do have after market products which are sold as compatible but not genuine versions of popular items, but I bought some that were listed as oral b and had oral b stamped on the heads but were definitely fake. I've bought genuine products on Amazon too but it can be a gamble.

LemaxObsessive · 21/11/2025 15:04

I received a fake baby Sleepyhead from Amazon in 2015! So it’s been going on that long at least. The misleading part, is when it says “Visit the Sleepyhead store” when what they mean is, visit the listings for Sleepyhead. They do the same with every brand and it’s massively misleading!

Springup24 · 21/11/2025 15:10

Oh my goodness, I always check if the product is from the 'xyz store' so I know it is actually from the real place rather than a fake listing. But reading a couple of posts, it now sounds like that doesn't mean anything 😳😳 eek!

LostThestral · 21/11/2025 15:15

I don't trust Amazon for big or expensive purchases for this reason.

I have 100% received fake perfume before

CraftyNavySeal · 21/11/2025 15:17

AlexandraJJ · 21/11/2025 12:33

Were the photos in the Amazon listing correct? I wonder if someone had bought one, a genuine one and returned a copy to get their money back, essentially getting the original for free and then it’s gone back on the shelf and shipped to you? What was the packaging like you received? Was there a photo of the official product on it that differed to what was inside?

No it’s way worse than that.

Amazon mixes all the stock together even if it’s come from a third party (that’s why you can buy an item from another seller but it’s shipped by Amazon). They don’t actually check it, it all goes on the same shelf.

So you can order something “from Amazon” but the one that comes off the shelf is from someone else.

SpidersAreShitheads · 21/11/2025 15:24

Coffeeishot · 21/11/2025 13:55

Do you think it is AI they are using?

It’s unlikely to be AI. One of the tells of AI is that there are no typos and it’s grammatically perfect. AI is absolute shit, but not for those reasons.

I have no problem believing government departments churn out poorly written replies. Many of the responses on our Universal Credit journal are truly shocking. No capital letters, no full stops or other punctuation, sentences that don’t really make sense - I could go on. I genuinely don’t understand how people with such poor writing skills are employed in a government customer service role.

Jugendstiel · 21/11/2025 15:26

JaninaDuszejko · 21/11/2025 12:23

If I was Ninja I'd be so pissed off that Amazon are damaging my brand name in this way. Sure they'd have a legal case.

Amazon is so shit now. Half the stuff seems to be coming from Chinese companies with nonsensical names and are actually more expensive than if you find a genuine UK seller. It's enshitification!

Edited

I agree it is much less reliable than it used to be. Trying to compete with TEMU to palm off the worst tat possible to unsuspecting customers.

EndlessHolidayWashing · 21/11/2025 15:34

Interestingly I bought some branded saucepans from Amazon, they were marginally cheaper than in the shops. This was a year ago and now I am beginning to suspect they are fake. One somehow got a scratch on the bottom and it scratched my new hob (wah!) and the exterior coating is starting to come off the sides.

Not long after I bought them I read about counterfeit items being sold on Amazon.

Having had this brand before which lasted year and years and years, they've either taken a massive downturn in quality or they are fake.
