Booked a last min two night trip next weekend
Booked Krakow and they were £30 each (me and partner )
Excited at first but then adding everything up
Hotel is £180 each
Uber to airport £50 each way
spending money £200 each
Then a drink in airport
So your looking at £430 plus £45 to choose plane seats as I’m scared of flying so that’s £480 ish
This close to Christmas
We literally live month to month
We don’t have savings etc
We do normally have around £1300 disposable income after bills but we never save and also our food comes out of this too.

Sensible me is thinking loose £30
What would you do?

In your position wouldn’t go, use the money to start building up some savings instead. £1300 disposables money a month is a lot to be living month to month and with no savings. Instead of spending more, focus on that for a bit and it’ll put you in a better position.

if you do decide to go though, there is lots you can back on to spend less. You don’t need a £180 hotel, there are cheaper options like air bnb. For a 2 night trip you don’t need £200 spending money, it’s not that expensive there and if you get a self catering apartment through air bnb you wouldn’t need to eat out for every meal. There’s lots to see and do there that is free or cheap. You could have £100 each for spending for example. Also no need for a drink at the airport if you really want to cut back, most airports have water dispenser now so just take a water bottle, that’ll help in Krakow too.

Personally at 27 I'd been on that plane to Krakow in a heartbeat! No kids, limited responsibilities, the chance for a romantic pre-Xms getaway!

How many Xmas presents do you really need to buy? Can this be your present to one another? Do what feels right to you but don't underestimate how little spontenaity is in your future. I used to love a drop of the hat getaway. Now I need a dog-sitter and to consider school timetables and homework and whatnot.

Can't the trip be yours and dp Christmas present to each other so you save money there

Go, I have never ever regretted going on holiday

Melsy88 · 20/11/2025 16:26

I went to Krakow earlier this year - I'd go if i was you. It'll be beautiful this time of year with the xmas markets.

I loved it and it's so easy to do cheaply. Eat at restaurants away from the touristy places and its much cheaper than the UK. Or go self-catering and eat in. It's a great place!

We don’t have any children yet,I do make stupid impulse decisions …I think I thought wow £30 …a bargain ,then you factor in all the other costs etc

I have no word...

but if you can't afford it, OF COURSE dont' go and waste even more money you can't afford to lose

NovemberRedHolly · 20/11/2025 16:28

I’d enjoy life and go.

Same but I’ve always been able to afford the trip and willing to cut my cloth if I’ve needed to do it on a budget.

Puddypuds · 20/11/2025 16:38

We got the train from the airport which was a doddle and the trams are brilliant. Get off the train at the main shopping centre then get a tram. You can buy tickets at the station and the trams stops and all the machines are modern and translate to English. It'll cost you a fraction of the amount of the cost of a taxi. Also there are some really good places to eat in the Jewish quarter. Just don't eat in the square as they is very expensive. The tram to the Jewish quarter takes about five minutes

GlasgowGal2014 · 20/11/2025 16:42

If you're 27 and have no kids to buy for I say go for it! Krakow is beautiful and I bet it's especially lovely in the run up to Christmas. It's also cheap to eat and drink there. Go and have fun - you are only young once!

mugglewump · 20/11/2025 16:42

I think your spending money can be cut and you can buy Xmas presents out there, which are cheaper and more interesting. Duty free presents too! Persuade a friend or family member to run you to the airport.

Sunshinesmon · 20/11/2025 16:43

What are you spending the £1300 disposable income on? Is it restaurants, going out etc, so this is just more of that (although likely cheaper) so actually in line with your usual spending?.

Are you being honest about your reasoning or do you just not want to fly?

No,my partner spends a lot on online slots
Sometimes can be £500 or more
i have started making him withdraw money and il keep it for him.
So then my disposable goes on food or paying for nights out etc

His gambling habit ! Wow

sorry not really the point - perhaps it should be

Maddy70 · 20/11/2025 16:49

You can do this cheaper than you say. You don't need a drink at the airport there are water stations everywhere etc. But ... You do need accomodation and transfers if you really can't afford it quit now. But why did you think it would only cost the flights?

Thundertoast · 20/11/2025 16:52

He's spending 500 a month on gambling???

GoodQueenWenceslaus · 20/11/2025 16:52

You don't need to spend £400 in two days. I would assume that at that price the hotel is offering breakfast, You can have at least one meal a day which is a cheap and cheerful sandwich or something similar. Given that you say the chances are that you would have had a hotel stay once a month in this country anyway, you can save everything back just by giving that up a couple of times.

ilovesooty · 20/11/2025 16:55

It sounds like a holiday that needn't cost too much.

I don't think I'd want to be with a partner wirh a gambling habit. No wonder money just disappears.

silkypyjamas · 20/11/2025 16:55

I'm in the YOLO camp. Can you agree not to buy Christmas presents for family and each other and use the money for the memories you will make on this trip. If the trip isn't going to get you into debt then i prefer happy memories to material things. You can make it fun by trying to see what freebies you can get in the Christmas markets?! I've been to Krakow and its beautiful, especially in Winter. You can make a hot chocolate last a long time sitting in the main square people watching & seeing the horse & carriages go by under a nice blanket with the heaters on. Its not an expensive city but a nice break I think you should go for it.

FFS sake. What a pointlessly stupid way to spend money. Just think, if he saved that instead of giving it to the gambling companies, you would have zero worries about funding Christmas

I hope you'e not planning on having children with him. He doesn't sound like a keeper.

£500 on online gambling!?
