Am I the only one? I can't smell weed!

To clarify, I don't do weed, never have so this isn't a case of habitation.

Everyone around me seems to be able to smell it, walking past certain houses or people in the street. They complain of the reek of weed. I can't smell a thing, not a whiff of anything!

In general my sense of smell is very good - I'm the most sensitive in my family to all other smells.

Is weed blindness (smellness?) a thing?

I wish I was the same, the scent makes me feel nauseous.

mrsjoyfulprizeforraffiawork · 20/11/2025 13:58

Wish I was you! My immediate adjoining neighbours deal weed and smoke it at regular intervals from about 11.00 am to 2.00am, (when they tend to fall asleep) which fills my flat with fumes unless the windows and air vents are firmly shut at all times and my balcony is unusable if they are awake.

DarkEyedSailor · 20/11/2025 14:00

The people in the flat below mine smoke so much you can smell it when you open the kitchen cupboards.

KnotWeady · 20/11/2025 14:09

I agree it's a relief to know there are others like me. I didn't know about Cressida Dick being similarly affected/blessed.

I wonder if there are other strong smells that a subset of the population can't smell?

It is just so weird. People exclaiming about the terrible smell of weed and me just going 'huh, what?'!

I was gobsmacked when my DD said she could smell it when we were walking through a city centre - 'can you smell whacky baccy Mam?). I didn't know what it smelled like until I was past middle aged.

I can smell it every time I walk past a certain house on the school run. My DGD asks if I can smell coffee at this point Confused - we now call this house the coffee house. (There's also the flower house, loud house and skid row on the way to school.)

Ghostspritz · 20/11/2025 14:29

I’ve never been able to spell it, which bewilders my husband and DS2. I’ve stood still and sniffed when they have insisted it’s there and a total stink and…. nothing.

CatHairEveryWhereNow · 20/11/2025 14:31

People - including ones with much poorer sense of smell generally - tell me they can smell it when we're out and about - I generally just nodd as I don't.

However the coriander tasting of soap gene I do have - didn't realise it was a thing just didn't really like it till we started watch a US chef on youtube who has that - oh then thought oh that's exactly what it is.

Thanks to Agatha Christieand CSI I'm aware only a subset of the population can smell Cyanide - but never had cause to find out if I'm one or not.

I know a subset of cats don't react to catnip and that's genetic.

I went out to a bougie little night craft market last weekend,.lots of rich middle age people all dressed in their Lululemon & pategonia walking their Labradoodles. Casually smoking a joint ( legally). The air was thick with weed. I actually commented to my husband how Mumsnet would have a fit,. they'd be retching and fainting all over the show Grin

I wonder if that’s why some weed smokers are adamant that it doesn’t cling to their clothes , if they genuinely can’t smell it . So odd though , literally on a par with fox pee type smell and not just while people are using it , but even if they are just passing by in clothes that have come into contact with it .

Yeah good point!

I have a really good smell, can even smell alcohol on someone's breath the next day even if they have only had a pint.

And I genuinely can't stand the smell of weed, makes me feel nauseous. I always wondered why some people who smoke say it doesn't smell. Thought it was they were just used to it.

Maybe some them genetically just can't smell how awful it is.

And as a PP said it is on par with fox poo and rotten eggs for me. I have sympathy for anyone who has neighbours who smoke it outside their house.

BMW6 · 20/11/2025 16:26

I can't smell it either and I have never used it.

I work in housing for a LA & the amount of times I smell it yet my colleague is always adamant it’s not! I think she must be nose blind to it because I can sniff it a mile off.

I envy you. I can't bear the smell.

I thought I was the only one....I went to Amsterdam with my daughter and never smelt a thing !!

Clychaugog · 20/11/2025 17:52

Covid played havoc with peoples' sense of smell. Maybe down to that?

RaininSummer · 20/11/2025 18:39

No I can't generally identify it or notice it very often.

DiscoBeat · 20/11/2025 18:46

I hate it so much. Someone in a house two fields away from me uses it and I can smell it if the wind is in my direction 🤮

SassyPearlEagle · 20/11/2025 19:08

I've never smelled it either, and from the way others describe it, I'm glad not to!

StruggleFlourish · 20/11/2025 19:12

This was a difficult poll to vote on because I don't think you're being unreasonable at all, but I can smell it. So how do I vote?

Anyway, when I was in my teens, 20s, and 30s, I didn't know what weed smelled like. I'd never done it, I'd never had any friends that did it, I wasn't around anyone that did it or if they did, I didn't know what I was smelling for but yes, other people would notice if we were in a crowd and say oh yeah did you notice that guy smelled like weed? I haad no idea I didn't know what weed smells like.

Now I know what it smells like but I guess it can smell a little different depending on a number of factors such as whether it's been smoked or whether it's a dried herb that's not been set on fire yet. What strain of cannabis it is (it's not generic weed just like generic beer or generic wine... To some people beer is beer and wine as wine, but anybody who's a connoisseur, there is an amazing range of varieties and weed is the same way), how stale/fresh it is and also who the person smelling is. Because not everybody smells things the same way.

I can tell you from personal experience that most of the time the smell of weed reminds me of a combination of burnt coffee / rubber tires / skunk spray. It's not that it smells like any one of those things really but there's just something about the chemical compound that reminds me of those things.

I'm adding an edit because I forgot to mention that the smell of weed actually does make me somewhat nauseous. There is a registered growing facility in a nearby town and whenever I drive by on the highway and the winds blowing the right way and I smell it, it makes me want to gag.

lemoncrisp · 20/11/2025 19:26

Nope I've never smelt it ...or at least not able to identify the smell. My adult daughter can spot it instantly and has drawn my attention to it but all I get is a hint of something 'different'. Glad I'm not the only one.

tothesea · 20/11/2025 20:20

I work in a nursery and a lot of the kids clothes stink of it. It’s a horrible smell, I hate it. And I hate the fact it’s seen as harmless by so many.
