AIBU to not buy DS16 the clothes he wants

ThatLimeNewt · 19/11/2025 20:16

DS16 wants to wear a black puffer, black nike hoodie and joggers, nike crossbody bag and a nike beanie / snood. I am refusing to buy these all black clothes as it will make him look dodgy or like a "roadman". Is it concerning that DS wants to dress in such a manner? AIBU to refuse to buy these clothes for him? Would you let your child dress like this? Also wearing nike head to toe seems a bit ludicrous to me 😂

Pretty much standard uniform for teens round here. They want to fit in, it's their unofficial uniform!

Holluschickie · 19/11/2025 20:18

Yes, I let my DS dress like this! He still does.

craigth162 · 19/11/2025 20:18

Depends where he wants to wear them... school no ... general wear yes. They sound practical and like what's of teens where. If he behaves like a roadman then worry

ForZanyAquaViewer · 19/11/2025 20:19

He’s 16, you can’t (or, at least, shouldn’t) be telling him what to wear. He should, however, pay for all this himself. Does he have an allowance? A job?

As to whether it’s concerning? No. It’s just how quite a lot of young people currently dress.

Comedycook · 19/11/2025 20:22

That's standard teen boy clothing. My ds dresses like that as do most boys round here it seems. I don't assume they're all dreadful criminals! Yabu.

Solenoid · 19/11/2025 20:22

Why are you buying your sixteen year old's clothes rather than giving him an allowance to learn to budget with (supplimented if feasible where you live - it isn't everywhere obviously - by some sort of part time/ Saturday or summer holiday job)so he can buy his own clothes?

That's why you're unreasonable.

You don't gatekeep a sixteen year old's clothes shopping except to set a budget you are comfortable with/ can afford.

Oohh · 19/11/2025 20:22

What? My 13 yo DS wears all black- mostly Nike but some north face. I’ve never considered telling him he can’t wear black- I actually quite like that it shows the dirt less than lighter colours. He’s 16 OP. He’s asking for normal teenage clothes. You are def BU. Maybe he could contribute to the cost though or have some for Christmas because all that in one go won’t be cheap.

Hatty65 · 19/11/2025 20:23

Standard teen clothing. I could not get my knickers in a twist about anything (bar the cost) of this.

joinery · 19/11/2025 20:23

It’s completely normal teen dress. Where do you live that you don’t see that? You can’t really police how your son dresses as long as it’s not offensive.
My 16yo has diversified a bit now so he’s not always in joggers and top to toe Nike, but he was until fairly recently and he’s on his third black puffa jacket!

evtheria · 19/11/2025 20:24

It’s pretty standard and I think generally less people now consider it real ‘roadman’ clothing, it’s quite mainstream now. Supposedly the next trend is a smart zip-neck jumper, a la Finance Bro, so you have that to look forward to.

I’m not keen myself, but would only really refuse a balaclava (which the boys around my area are intent on wearing, whatever their intentions behind it).

Mumdiva99 · 19/11/2025 20:24

I just had a discussion over my 14 year olds tracksuit bottoms that I was going to buy. 'Don't get me those mum - everyone will rip the piss.' I can't see the difference between the 2 pairs - but a teen can.
I have had 2 older kids that couldn't care less for labels or brands, as my husband and I don't. But for my youngest it really matters. He wants to fit in and not stand out. For that reason I 'allow it fam'. (Obviously there isn't an unlimited budget but 1 Adidas tracksuit can be bought reasonably in the sale, and i make it part of xmas or day present if he wants more brands.)

Kreepture · 19/11/2025 20:27

i;m 44 and in head to toe black from Killstar & Hellbunny today... even my shoes, bra, and hooded cape i wore over my black t-shirt, cardigan & trackies were black (although the cardi does have pink spiderwebs on)

I wear black most days. I don't see the issue?

Stop policing your kids clothes.

EuroTour · 19/11/2025 20:27

Surprised he's wearing Nike at 16 but it's fine to be wearing what he wants. He'll look like any other teen.

Sunfloweranddaisy · 19/11/2025 20:29

That’s pretty much normal attire at the minute for teen boys!

Also he is 16 he can wear what he wants. If you don’t want to buy it then that’s up to you but it’s great way to push your son away.

Starlingsintheloft · 19/11/2025 20:33

It all sounds like practical and warm clothing especially for this time of year. Although he’d be sensible to consider drivers will be less likely to see him when it gets dark outside if he’s wearing nothing but black.

AnSolas · 19/11/2025 20:33

Sorry but..... he is 16
You can insist on fashion standards when he is out with you but unless the overall cost is excessive for your family income/spend ratio he is a little old for you to be controling what he wants to wear

JacknDiane · 19/11/2025 20:42

@ThatLimeNewt, let him get on with it, he doesn't want to look like his mum chooses his clothes

Arlanymor · 19/11/2025 20:44

He's 16, he can go out looking like Borat if he wants.

ZenNudist · 19/11/2025 20:45

What do you think he should wear?

Oohh · 19/11/2025 20:45

EuroTour · 19/11/2025 20:27

Surprised he's wearing Nike at 16 but it's fine to be wearing what he wants. He'll look like any other teen.

Is Nike not cool in your area? What do they wear instead? Here seems to be Nike, berghaus, north face and some other make I can’t remember. All black though mostly

JudgeBread · 19/11/2025 20:46

Glad you weren't my mam, I was a little goth and she was absolutely gung ho buying me all the get up, she loved it.

He's 16, if you can't dress like a plonker at 16 and get away with it when can you? Buy him the bloody clothes.

Bigearringsbigsmile · 19/11/2025 20:47

I wouldn't buy him clothes that make him look like a criminal no.
It's only standard teen wear for a certain set of kids.

Holluschickie · 19/11/2025 20:48

What set of kids is that?

TheGrimSmile · 19/11/2025 20:50

Bog standard for 16 year olds everywhere. Pick your battles.

JinglingtoChristmas · 19/11/2025 20:51

All teens around here are monochrome. Black, a tiny bit of grey and occassional some white.

He is 16, it’s not offensive so it’s fine.
