I really thought Ashanti’s Rock Wit U was just a song about having fun, being in love and frolicking on a beach with your man while looking stunning. The vibes were pure body bliss.
But then one day my brain actually processed this part of the verse:
”I don’t know if I can handle you as just a friend…
I’m so far in…
Even if you’re not just mine…”
… And suddenly it clicked. Oh. This is not just a sweet summer song. This is about catching deep feelings for someone you probably shouldn’t and being okay with not being the only one. 😳
And then there’s Mariah Carey’s Honey, which I genuinely thought was about being in love. Until one day I actually read the lyrics and realised… this isn’t about love. It’s about dependency. It’s about addiction. It’s about…well, protein, let’s just say…
“One hit of your love addicted me…
Now I’m strung out on you, darlin…
I can hardly wait for another taste of honey.”
😭
So AIBU to think loads of song went completely over our heads when we were younger and only hit differently (and hilariously) when we grew up?
Drop yours. I know I’m not the only one. 👀
