Sacral dimple concern

Hi mums,
I wanted to ask if anyone has had a similar experience with their baby.

My little girl was born with a sacral dimple just above her anus. I can clearly see the bottom of the dimple, but there is a small patch of hair above it. She was born at 2.5 kg, and she’s Mediterranean with some fine hair on her face and shoulders as well, so it could simply be lanugo.

The doctor at the hospital has requested a scan (ultrasound) because he couldn’t clearly see the very bottom part of her sacrum during the check.
However, my baby:

  • pees and poos many times a day,
  • moves her legs and feet perfectly,
  • is gaining weight really well (almost at 3 kg in 15 days).

Has anyone had a baby with a sacral dimple plus some hair in that area?
How did the ultrasound go? Did everything turn out to be normal?

I’d really appreciate hearing your experiences

It's definitely worth the scan to check for mild spina bifida, but it's great news that your baby is doing so well

I am assuming it is to check for neurotube defects ?

Yes my son who’s now 8! I’d never heard of it before and as the doc couldn’t see the bottom so we had a scan to rule out spinal bifida - as he was wildly kicking his legs!

it was a bit of a nightmare during the nappy phase as it collected poo. And I think it freaked a few nursery staff out who also hadn’t come across it before.

but all good and I forgot about it really for the last few years (now I no longer need to do bum wipes I guess) too I saw your post

nit sure the hair is significant. As you say just a bit of hair surely.

I have this and both my daughters, I thought it was normal until a doctor commented on it when I was 13 ( I’d banged my coccyx and was having it checked) never caused any issues

DS1 had this. It was never scanned and he’s absolutely fine, now 23.
