To Spend £1345 on a Set of Earrings ?

Moaning5 · 19/11/2025 10:05

My dad has just gifted me £2000 - how nice !

My parents have NEVER gifted me money in this way. He’s done something with his pension and given all of us (4) the same amount.

I have no real savings to speak of other than an emergency fund. I have no mortgage to put it towards. I have grown up children who are independent. I have no debt to clear.
AIBU to pay £1345 for a pair of gold hoop earrings with pear drops as worn by Princess Catherine which I have always loved ?
Or am I being ridiculous and it needs to be be spent more sensibly ? On what though ?

I go for it. You can add the leftover £600 to some savings if you want. But its treat money so buy a treat

IsThisIt39 · 20/11/2025 19:29

They aren’t that nice tbh. Put it away til you’ve thought of something worthwhile.

Sorry been busy and catching up !

Yes Annoushka - gold hoops, pearl drops.
I don’t have any other jewellery other than cheap costume jewellery which I know I versions of these in. I won’t because I won’t wear them.
I would wear these ones every day 😁

Mortgage paid.
£25k emergency fund - not loads, literally in case my car packs in, boilers blows up, redundancy. I wouldnt use that for anything frivolous.
Still work full time with a Public Sector pension for retirement.
Love travelling but can’t leave elderly dog so won’t use it for holidays (already have UK cottages booked for her).
Dad just said enjoy it.

Thanks for all replies sorry I was MIA

Have I just read that correct or I do I need my specs on ! …….” I have no savings” , but you have a 25k in an emergency fund , I’d class that as a pretty good savings pot if you ask me .

what kind of emergency are you expecting for that , I’d be more than happy if I had that in my “emergency fund “

misses point of buying the earrings because if I had a pot that big I’d just buy them without asking folk on the internet , being as it was a gifted amount .

Jorge14 · 20/11/2025 19:45

I can’t help but think it’s such a waste of money but that’s just me.

Anonymouseposter · 20/11/2025 19:47

I wouldn’t spend that amount on earrings. I would add it to your emergency fund, either you or your children might have some sort of financial emergency and it would be there to fall back on.

Anonymouseposter · 20/11/2025 19:49

I take that back as I just read that you already have £25,000, I thought you said you didn’t have much in savings.

OrangesCinammonIvy · 20/11/2025 19:50

@Trendyname it's not "trading " it's buying low cost index funds ie basket of stiocks and waiting for their value to increase
Op will be able to but a suite of earrings and still keep her two grand .

NaneePolly · 20/11/2025 19:55

As long as you are happy with just your emergency fund, go treat yourself

Larsaleaping · 20/11/2025 19:56

Just get the earrings. If your dad had bought you the earrings as a gift, nobody would be saying that you should return them and use the money to put in savings. I'm sure he'd want to see you enjoy the money.

Personally I'd spend it on a holiday but if the earrings bring you joy then that's what you should get.

Partypants83 · 20/11/2025 19:59

I'd say, go for it!
You can save the rest sensibly...

Pollyanna87 · 19/11/2025 10:23

People on Mumsnet are so miserly! If you love the earrings, buy them. You can wear them every day for the rest of your life.

unless you lose them or they break or get stolen...in which case you could end up wearing £1300 earrings for a few hours.

Susiy · 20/11/2025 20:03

Keep the money for a rainy day.
Honestly, just because a royal wore this style means they are overpriced.
The attraction will fade quickly after you buy them and then you will start thinking about other things you could have done with this money.

They aren’t that nice tbh. Put it away til you’ve thought of something worthwhile.

You are entitled to your opinion but perhaps you should consider that it's kinder to say nothing than to be negative. One person's treasure is another's trash

LucyMonth · 20/11/2025 20:15

By all means spent the £2k on a treat for yourself but that much on some really bland earrings that you can find for much cheaper? Nah. I’d buy a unique ring, a luxury handbag I’d use everyday, an amazing coat etc.

Noname20 · 20/11/2025 20:16

You should buy the earrings ! Every time you wear them will be a little reminder of how much your dad loves you and tbh you have savings that whilst not massive will help you manage any unexpected bills

You can get it from 100-400£ and then save the rest.

Based on the £25k savings, then yeah go for it. Although I would look into insuring them just in case they're stolen or lost.

I would imagine she'd have the sense to insure them. So that's not really a problem.

Buy the earrings and enjoy them OP. Your Dad wants you to treat yourself, so do it.
Money's for spending on enjoyable things as well as necessities.

Bojosgirl · 20/11/2025 20:42

If it makes you feel good go for it. Personally I'd never spens that a out of money on any jewellery but it comes down to personal choice

ThisChirpyLemonUser · 20/11/2025 20:47

I just got a sterling silver pearl necklace from Kyoto pearls from tk maxx and I'm pretty sure I saw some earrings like that design grey and white. It's solid silver and gold fastenings and not too spenny

Dumpspirospero · 20/11/2025 20:51

The Kiki earrings are 18ct gold and I am assuming mined (not lab created diamonds) If so, £850 is a good price for these.
Gold price is high and set to go higher. Gold holds its value. My husband bought me a large vintage (Victorian) 9ct gold locket on an exceptionally heavy gold belcher chain. Cost £300 or so, about 15 years ago. It would now cost over £7000. Gold is over $4000 a Troy ounce just now. Set to go to $5000 next year. Precious gemstones are also becoming rarer - stock-piled by foreign governments etc. (Don’t by lab created diamonds)
For the person looking for citrine hoops, here is a more affordable version https://www.lilyblanche.com/collections/citrine-earrings/products/citrine-drop-hoop-earrings-gold-november
they are out of stock just now but they have lots of other gemstones.

Citrine Drop Hoop Earrings | Gold | November | Lily Blanche

These gorgeous 18 carat gold vermeil hoop earrings feature a real citrine gemstone at their centre, making them the perfect personalised gift for your loved one.

You should definitely spoil yourself.

On another matter, does your DF know that he can only give £3000 a year away without incurring inheritance tax? That is, if he dies within seven years and has more than £325000 to leave, with an allowance if he leaves the family home in his will.

Exactly.

Youremylobster86 · 19/11/2025 10:14

Life's too short. Buy the earrings.

And insurance.

Brothernotmyproblem · 20/11/2025 21:01

A lot of people are miserable on this thread. Just because you don’t like or spend money on the same things as OP give it a rest

I’ve got a friend who spends £10k a year on holidays, I’ve had to spend it on home renovations for the last couple of years. No one is right or wrong
