To Spend £1345 on a Set of Earrings ?

Moaning5 · 19/11/2025 10:05

My dad has just gifted me £2000 - how nice !

My parents have NEVER gifted me money in this way. He’s done something with his pension and given all of us (4) the same amount.

I have no real savings to speak of other than an emergency fund. I have no mortgage to put it towards. I have grown up children who are independent. I have no debt to clear.
AIBU to pay £1345 for a pair of gold hoop earrings with pear drops as worn by Princess Catherine which I have always loved ?
Or am I being ridiculous and it needs to be be spent more sensibly ? On what though ?

Having worked with a jewellery I can say that most would say buy something other than earrings as one often gets lost (he would nevet buy his wife earrings). On the other hand if they are something you would wear, would enjoy and would otherwise never be able to afford go for it. I spent years saving because thats what we are told to do. But when I retired and I had a little spare cash I treated myself to a handbag I had always coveted but couldn't bring myself to buy (even when a high earner) as felt it should go on bills/house/kids etc etc. I love it and used it a lot. So much the following Christmas I purchased another in a different colour! Now realise that ad long as my bills are paid and theres a little for an emergency *(boiler/car repair etc) that life is too short not to treat yourself when you get a windfall. As someone else posted buy them, wear them and think of your dad every time you do.

Beancounter69 · 20/11/2025 18:41

For what it’s worth, I still massively regret not buying a necklace I fell in love with over 30 years ago. I won’t make that mistake again

Nomorechipsforme · 20/11/2025 18:43

If you have an emergency fund then treat yourself. Life is too short and they will be worth the sentimental value. What a lovely gift they will be x

Bowies · 20/11/2025 18:49

So easy to lose an earring.

I would rather add it to savings.

Possibly a different and less expensive piece of jewellery (and not earrings).

OrangesCinammonIvy · 20/11/2025 18:54

Op do you invest can invest ,is invest it now markets are low and when it grows to 4 grand skin the earrings money off but keep your two grand

Sorry been busy and catching up !

Yes Annoushka - gold hoops, pearl drops.
I don’t have any other jewellery other than cheap costume jewellery which I know I versions of these in. I won’t because I won’t wear them.
I would wear these ones every day 😁

Mortgage paid.
£25k emergency fund - not loads, literally in case my car packs in, boilers blows up, redundancy. I wouldnt use that for anything frivolous.
Still work full time with a Public Sector pension for retirement.
Love travelling but can’t leave elderly dog so won’t use it for holidays (already have UK cottages booked for her).
Dad just said enjoy it.

Thanks for all replies sorry I was MIA

Yes, get them. I agree with the poster above that they will always remind you of your dad. Beautiful earrings, you deserve them.

Jillybloop393 · 20/11/2025 18:56

Buy the earrings, sweetie. Insure them, wear them, love them!

It’s individual but no earrings would be worth that to me.

In that case I don't know why you're asking.

It's not a fortune considering your income and savings.

Some women here regularly spend £3K on a handbag and think nothing of it.

I don;t think income and savings always translates into I'm secure i can spend something. Doesn't for me. I've been lucky enough to get a bonus for the last oh 20 years at least, couple of grand. It has gone in the family pot every single year apart from once when I got myself a Mulberry bag c£500 - when we had a mortgage I justified not spending it on myself as I paid some off the mortgage. We haven't had a mortgage for about five years, still goes in the family pot, I get the benefit of course as it is joint funds but I cannot get myself something to the value of the bonus. Well will not I suppose. This year my husband has taken it out of the joint account and transferred it into my account so I've just started using the money for day to day expenses. I need help!

Bubbles90 · 20/11/2025 19:05

How lovely.

SurvivalInstinctsOfABakedPotato · 20/11/2025 19:06

As someone who's family always saved and were sensible, and saved nice things for best... Then they All died before 65 so it was an utter waste.

I SAY BLOODY ENJOY IT WHILE YOU'RE HERE

Shenaniganss · 20/11/2025 19:07

Life is short, who knows what’s around the corner. I know, I lost my husband to cancer 9 years ago at the age of 57. 8 days from terminal diagnosis to death. It made me reassess what’s important in life, and so now if I really want something and can get it without going into debt, then I doi Take your joy where and when you can.
I was in Cornwall earlier this year, saw a beautiful necklace in the window of a jeweller’s shop, went in to look at it - it was VERY expensive, but I only hesitated for a little while and then thought, I can afford it, I love it, so I’m going to buy it. And I did, and I don’t regret it.

catlover123456789 · 20/11/2025 19:08

I'd be terrified of losing them if I ever wore them, so not sure I could enjoy them.

BusyExpert · 20/11/2025 19:09

Buy them. You will always remember your father when you wear them.

verybighouseinthecountry · 20/11/2025 19:11

Louisetopaz21 · 19/11/2025 10:15

I wouldn't spend that much on earrings because I always end up losing one.

Same here, and I always lose it whilst asleep in my own bed but can never find it!

Clinicalwaste · 20/11/2025 19:12

I think jewellery is a good investment op. Keep the receipt and packaging and pass them onto your kids when you pop off as a family heirloom which will hopefully be worth more by then.

Mcoco · 20/11/2025 19:13

My only worry would be losing one. Can you get them insured? Other than that as you have savings and no debts I would buy them. You will feel happy wearing them and could save the remaining amount. But I am a bit of a spend thrift at times so may not be giving you sensible advice!

Mcoco · 20/11/2025 19:14

Can we see a photo of them OP i am curious now!

MammarOfOne · 20/11/2025 19:14

Christmas 2022 my mum gave me £350. She’s NEVER spent that much before and she told me it was to treat myself.

My local jewellers had a closing down sale (everything half price) so I had a lovely day with my mum, we had lunch and went jewellery shopping.

I got a white gold necklace with a diamond pendant (I’ve always wanted a simple diamond necklace), a pair of white gold hoop earrings and a Clogau daffodil ring.

My mum died May 2023 and I’m so glad that I have these things that she bought me. I could have paid a bill or bought some food shopping or saved it for a rainy day but then I wouldn’t have the good memory of that day and beautiful jewellery.

Buy the earrings, take your dad out for lunch and take him to buy them (or show him what HE bought for you). They will always be ‘the earrings that dad treated me to’ and they will last forever.

I'm all for treating yourself to the lovely earrings, but would wait until the Summer because if this cold snap continues throughout the Winter you'll need that money to pay for your heating bill.

We also don't know what Rachel Thieves has in store until she announces the budget at the end of the month.

Anyahyacinth · 20/11/2025 19:19

The only thing with earrings as a treat is that you only see them when you look in a mirror…others enjoy them not you.

HayceeDeeCee · 20/11/2025 19:19

Do it, gold is a fantastic investment and these will become a treasured, classic heirloom to pass on to your loved ones. In the meantime you get to enjoy them...win win

hcee19 · 20/11/2025 19:20

Go for it, treat yourself. You are answerable to no one. You deserve too

therealduchess · 20/11/2025 19:22

I think the earrings are a perfect way to spend the money. Because, they will always be a happy reminder of your parents when you wear them, AND, you will still be better off than you were before you received the gift!
You will still have over 600 quid to stash away in your emergency fund.
Enjoy your gorgeous new hoops!
