To Spend £1345 on a Set of Earrings ?

Moaning5 · 19/11/2025 10:05

My dad has just gifted me £2000 - how nice !

My parents have NEVER gifted me money in this way. He’s done something with his pension and given all of us (4) the same amount.

I have no real savings to speak of other than an emergency fund. I have no mortgage to put it towards. I have grown up children who are independent. I have no debt to clear.
AIBU to pay £1345 for a pair of gold hoop earrings with pear drops as worn by Princess Catherine which I have always loved ?
Or am I being ridiculous and it needs to be be spent more sensibly ? On what though ?

You can guarantee as soon as you spend that you’ll suddenly need money for an emergency and think ‘ why was I so frivolous?’

buy something nice but not at that cost- you may lose them. X

Sorrynotsorry22 · 20/11/2025 18:00

Your money and a lovely gift to remember you dad. Could become an heirloom !

Bunny65 · 20/11/2025 18:01

If you love them and you can afford them then buy them guilt free. Obviously get a discount if you can.

Ladygodalmighty · 20/11/2025 18:02

Kate Middleton is worth £38m+. If she lost one of these earrings I doubt she'd be very bothered. However, I know people that have spent 25% of their life savings on a car. Tomorrow is not promised to any of us so do what makes you happy 😍

Dawnb19 · 20/11/2025 18:10

It depends if you can afford it. For me it's a lot of money to spend on yourself but it's your money so why not. I only get my hair cut once a year as I feel bad spending money on myself but everyone's situation is different. 🤷 If I was to receive money like that id probably pay off any debt first, make sure the kids had everything they needed then save it for any unexpected bills.

A holiday sounds better get yourself a gift abroad from a jewellers

Putneydad7 · 20/11/2025 18:16

If you don't have any savings, why on earth would you waste money like this? Gold jewellery is like buying a new car, as soon as you leave the shop it's devalued. In the case of most gold jewellery it pretty much depreciates to the price of the scrap metal. My mum was an antique dealer for many years and died this year. Her gold and silver jewellery and other pieces went to auction and none of it fetched more than the scrap value.
But the main point is, why do you think that a windfall has to be "spent". It could be "invested" instead.
I'd pop it in an ISA, find some emerging market fund take a bit of risk, put it in that.
Then at least when the chancellor comes for you, or you need to put the heating on more than 20 minutes a day, you'll have some dough.

LucyLoo1972 · 20/11/2025 18:17

you can get very very similar earrings for a lot less I think

lifesfartooshort · 20/11/2025 18:17

Absolutely agree you should go for them. Wear them often. Your Dad would love to see you use it for something you love and it will always be a special memory. Hopefully they have screw backs (sure they will at that price). Or you could look at £'s in bank that you may never spend.
Im a nurse still working past retirement. (Wont b well off) Well happy with my life and the triple diamond earrings I wear every day that only I know the cost of.

Lovetoplan2 · 20/11/2025 18:17

Good idea because those earrings will always remind you of your Dad

Tezza1 · 20/11/2025 18:18

In my youth I saw an ad with a picture of the French actress, Catherine Deneuve, wearing a pair of plain diamond studs. I know she is extraordinarily beautiful, but those diamond studs represented everything 20 year old me yearned to be.

A couple of years later I bought myself a pair. I loved them so much and wore them constantly. I felt good wearing them. The pleasure they gave me was so much greater than the cost.

Buy the earrings! My parents gave me money for birthdays and Christmases and, whereas my mother would always have ideas as to what I should do with it, dad would always tell me to buy something lovely and not fritter it away on the bills and he was always very excited to hear what I’d bought. He died last month and I’m wearing one of the rings I bought with my birthday money. ❤️

JustMeAndTheFish · 20/11/2025 18:20

Sorry.. didn’t mean to add the giphy 🙄

hareagain · 20/11/2025 18:24

Please buy the earrings and enjoy them. You can leave them to someone dear, who will hopefully enjoy them for years too. If you dont need the money in the here and now, Id consider it well spent. It sounds like you dad would agree.

dreamersdown · 20/11/2025 18:25

They aren’t quite the same but I’ve worn these earrings every day for 2 years (and you can take the pearls off) - I think they’re extraordinary quality and they’re £160 currently: www.monicavinader.com/gift-sets/nura-baroque-pearl-and-doina-huggies-gold

I don’t think she pays for them probably freebies

LilacRoseLady · 20/11/2025 18:28

If I were you, I'd probably treat myself to something special with some of the money but only up to a few hundred pounds. I'd invest the rest in Premium Bonds as you'll never lose your money and every month you have the chance to win up to a million! And every amount you win is like another gift from your dad. It could be the gift that keeps on giving! 😁

WestwardHo1 · 20/11/2025 18:29

I think you'd be mad, personally.

GammaGamma · 20/11/2025 18:29

The price of gold is extremely high at the moment, I’d hold off buying them for the time being.

Thevalueofeverythingandthecostofnothing · 20/11/2025 18:31

Why not have a look a Fellows auctioneers second hand and they’ll only cost you the scrap value plus about 10% as opposed to a jewellers 300% mark up

FluffyBenji23 · 20/11/2025 18:32

If you have no savings then no, don't do it. Buy a replica pair and save the rest. Very few people will tell the difference!

SistaPB · 20/11/2025 18:33

Personally I think that’s a lot to spend on earrings which people will not really distinguish with cheaper versions and/ot they may get lost.

£2000 would buy a nice holiday or some lovely days out or help with decorating a house but I guess we all have different priorities 🤷‍♀️

Or you could just invest it in a 4 5% apr ISA where you are guaranteed a tax free gift of £90 in your first year 😁💰💰💰

Brilliant idea - the one the OP wants are literally the same quality-wise!!! Your suggestion is brilliant!

Ladygardenerinderby · 20/11/2025 18:36

Your choice obviously but I loose earrings like there’s no tomorrow so I defo would not. If you want something to remind you of the lovely thing your dads done I’d buy a necklace and have a safety chain on it or a watch or a really gorgeous handbag but defo not earrings .
