Reading film spoilers

Pitiful I know, but I get very stressed watching films with plot twists and the like. Sometimes, I'll stop a film or series and read the plot on Wikipedia because I have to know that everything is going to be OK. Like Anna and Mr Bates in Downton Abbey. I had to read their whole story once the romance started.

I'm planning to go and see Avatar 3 next month. Thinking of reading the plot beforehand to prepare myself for any dramas.

YABU - Pull yourself together, it's only a few hours of nerves
YANBU - What does it matter if you enjoy yourself and enjoy a good story

That doesn’t sound enjoyable. If it makes you ‘very stressed’ then why bother doing it at all?

JudgeBread · 18/11/2025 22:14

I have a pal who always reads the last chapter of a book first 😁

Enjoy things however you want to enjoy them mate, you're not hurting anybody.

I always read the whole plot including spoilers before watching a film or series, I enjoy it more if I know what’s going to happen and if it looks rubbish I don’t bother.

Oh my god I thought I was the only person to do this! I tend to only do it with very tense, twisty films but yes it’s a beige flag of mine that I can’t just be patient and wait to see how the film plays out. I also often see trailers for films on Facebook that I like the look of but know I’ll probably never watch so I Wikipedia the plot then just to feel like I’ve seen the film.

If reading it first helps you enjoy it more then do it!

I've definitely done that for scary films so I know when to expect most of the scariest bits 🤣

Yep I sometimes do that. I also like to know the plot of a film before I watch it 😀

As long as you don't spoil it for anyone else then it's OK.

But I would feel like the shared experience wasn't the same if I went to see a film with someone who already knew the plot. Like Bruce Willis being dead, I enjoyed chatting to my wife about it afterwards. How she realised before I did and what gave it away to her. It was an interesting discussion which we wouldn't have had if one of us had already read spoilers.
