Is it really a widely held belief that those who dislike animals are dangerous?

According to dh family it’s a valid concern ?!

I have never wanted pets, not keen on things like zoos or farm trips for the dc. I don’t like the smell of animals (plus I’m allergic to cats!). Really don’t like dogs (I’m scared of them!).

I dont hate animals I just don’t like them and avoid them as much as possible !

According to MIL this is a red flag and she thinks I could have a personality disorder as people who don’t like animals are ‘not quite right’. I did say to her that I just avoid animals it’s not as if I go round kicking puppies or anything ??!! She said ‘everyone agrees and we are all worried we’ve never known anyone who doesn’t like the dogs !’

Is it that strange ? They (dh family) and especially MIL seem very wary of me ??!

I don’t like animals inside. I like when they live outside, freely. I’ve walked out of many restaurants and coffee shops that allow pets, I think it’s unhygienic. Doesn’t mean I want to harm them, but don’t like living inside with them.

We don’t generally smear the coffee over our dogs before drinking it……🤨

So, most adults too then?

@IfItsPink you think most adults might kill you?

Best you stay indoors!
or quit deliberately misinterpreting what people say. It’s not cool.

No but dogs are there taking up floor space, sometimes wandering around tables or barking. If you are a non-dog owner the smell of a dog is really noticeable and (for some) unpleasant.

If you are actively scared of dogs then having a dog in the restaurant can ruin your dining experience.

If the restaurant/cafe allows dogs then obviously it’s not the dog owners issue, it’s up to those of us who don’t like dogs to take that into consideration when deciding where to go. But dogs in inside spaces is a real problem for lots of people.

I wouldn’t leave the restaurant because a dog came in, but I would be considerably uncomfortable and wouldnt linger for dessert or coffee.

i can understand indifference, but I’d be a bit wary of someone who isn’t moved by nature documentaries where animals die a horrible death.

This is why I never watch these programmes. I know nature is cruel and accept that, but most nature programmes are wall to wall killing ... terrified animals fleeing and trembling in fear.
What would I choose to watch this?

Id say one learned from the other- the first as a puppy would power towards me and leap up and head but me. It got more violent(😉) as he got bigger and then he would go into a sort of frozen pose so they started keeping him away. I felt so bad! Second is huge and would kill me if given the chance. I feel like a failure of a human being until I get home to my dude who acts like I’m the best in the world!

Yes, that's probably it - they definitely do learn from each other.

I was going to say in my last post (but somehow managed to leave out the crucial word) that they/the dominant one might be jealous of you, if they are very bonded to MIL and then see her making a fuss of you. Are they "one woman dogs" eg shepherd breeds?

Londonrach1 · 19/11/2025 16:01

Yabu. My aunt doesn't like animals but she's the kindest lady you ever meet and I've known her since she meet my uncle over 30 years. I understand why she doesn't so we keep the poodle type dog in our family away from her. It's cruelty to animals not not liking them

TheDearPlumOrca · 19/11/2025 16:09

No.

As PP said, cruelty to animals is a concern but other than that, no.

definitely- German Shepard and Rottweiler!

I am surrounded by animals both inside and outside and they enhance our lives in many ways. But they are animals and I have no issue with other people not being interested in them and even not tolerating them. But I would have issues if they are deliberately cruel to them. It definitely is only a small step to being cruel to humans.
If our pony doesn't trust someone and turns her back on them it's an accurate assessment in about 90 percent of cases.
