The evils of AI

With Radio 4 Start the Week discussing how Uber’s algorithm effectively charges lone females at night higher prices as they are a sure customer, and nurses in the US with poor credit ratings being offered lower monthly wages, am I alone in thinking we need to regulate the use of our data more heavily and quickly.

any examples too where people have been at the pointy end of the stick?

YABU - AI is transforming everything I do for the good

YANBU - when are the robots taking over?!

Surely thats discrimination? and illegal?

OrwellianTimes · 17/11/2025 15:03

You’re describing algorithms not AI.

This. It's driving me mad that anything automated now is described as AI.

mutinyonthetwix · 17/11/2025 15:12

A person has probably set that arrangement up. Not AI.

Yabu because you don’t understand the difference between algorithms and AI

This was Start the Week Radio 4 this morning. Digital Futures and Information Crises. I only heard part of it for example uber use dynamic pricing...they want to raise the fare if they see your phone is low on battery ( how do they know that?)i am going to listen to the whole thing later.

Sunshineandoranges · 17/11/2025 15:23

The programme also talked about digital educatiin in schools..Latvia are doing very well!

I'm looking forward to the Skynet vs Humanity AI war to be honest. 90% of the human race being wiped off the face of the planet is a net win in my book.

Pretty much anything that becomes widespread and impactful in society is going to have both positive and negative consequences for society.

The internet is a prime example of this.

And you don’t understand the difference between generative AI and machine learning, which is a form of AI

The thing is that it has always been the case that prices will change depending on circumstances. Pay £1 for a bottle of water at the supermarket, £1.50 at a train station, £4 at Glastonbury Festival. Just because they are using algorithms or AI doesn’t make the AI evil but the application of it.

Algorithms aren't any type of AI.
