Donald Trump BBC

If Donald Trump gets compensation from the BBC to the tune of a million, which might affect our license fee payments, would it be appropriate to stop buying goods from US for a while. I think the BBC were wrong to misrepresent what Trump said, but effectively suing the population as a retaliation seems a step too far.

Trump: look at this! The BBC!!!!

Trump: Epstein? FAKE NEWS!!!! Nothing to see here.

Would a successful lawsuit involve having to find someone who saw the original programme thinking Trump was a jolly good egg and changed their mind by the end?

Might need to look really really hard if so

It needs more than that - he'd need proof it actually damaged him. In fact, he subsequently won the election.

Dollymylove · 15/11/2025 15:36

5 billion dollars is a lot of wonga but nowhere near what the so-called comedian Lenny Henry wants us to pay in slave reparations 😉

bluelavender · 15/11/2025 15:37

I don't get why Trump is going to file in Florida- it was on Iplayer broadcast in the uk- why doesn't Trump need to file in a British court?

calmag · 15/11/2025 15:38

The Cheeto in Chief needs to naff off.

dottiehens · 15/11/2025 15:38

I bet you millions you will not feel the same if it were the other way round. Hopefully most people are still sane and think that provoking him further it will be worse for us.

BBC had it coming and it may be that other things come up now,

Hard disagree. The BBC were utterly idiotic to let this one through, however good they are generally.

Plus on this logic no one could ever sue the BBC however outrageously they behave- surely that’s not a good thing. The BBC have already had to be dragged through the courts by their own staff on numerous occasions (Carrie Gracie et al) for things like equal pay/ discrimination. Maybe facing someone with deep pockets is what’s needed to give them a proper shake up…

Dollymylove · 15/11/2025 15:40

SeaAndStars · 15/11/2025 15:34

What would that gain?
Who do you think provides better, more impartial news?

Well its certainly not Auntie, is it 🤣🤣🤣

Whammyammy · 15/11/2025 15:41

I hope he sues them for a lot more-and wins. What other news stories have they edited to give a different version? It might make the bbc report the truth.
Plus I don't pay a licence fee and won't affect me

".... would it be appropriate to stop buying goods from US for a while. ..."

What !

Are people still buying US goods ?

:-)

dottiehens · 15/11/2025 15:44

Plus not buying American goods only affect Americans so?

amicisimma · 15/11/2025 15:46

The BBC was an internationally respected broadcaster, renowned for its impartiality. And paid for by the citizens of the UK.

Quite apart from all sorts of biased reporting in recent years, which is another topic, they deliberately edited a speech from the guy who is now, and then was potentially, President of the US, to dishonestly show him in an extremely bad light. This could have had repercussions and encouraged certain reactions from the public. Although the BBC did not release it in the US, a large number of Americans were familiar with, and shocked by, the recording.

Whatever you or I might think of Trump the man, I think any broadcaster who wishes to be taken seriously needs to be very careful to portray accurately and respectfully the words and actions of the President (or potential President) of the United States of America, elected by the people of the United States according to their system. And, indeed, any other world leader, regardless of the personal opinions of any journalist.

I very much doubt the BBC will end up paying $billions; I should think some settlement will be agreed. But I think Trump is absolutely right to bring this out into the open.

Daygloboo · 15/11/2025 15:47

Genevieva · 15/11/2025 15:10

Interesting. That vaguely rings a bell. He’s the American who was into conspiracies about aliens or something wasn’t he? You see the headlines in British papers, but have no idea who the people are, so you absorb broken snippets.

Did the plaintiff ( I think they still use that term in the US) get the money? It’s one thing suing a corporation, quite another’s person. I’d imagine it reaches the point where the number is immaterial because you were bankrupt several hundred million earlier.

But my point is that it would effectively be suing the people because we pay for the BBC. So he is directly harming us. Which is why I said upthread that we should stop buying American goods....because he has insulted us and shown no care for us.

I'm fucking FURIOUS with the BBC for dicking around like this as if they were 6th form students. Utter wankers.

Trump is a cunt but the beeb have destroyed their own reputation.

RingoJuice · 15/11/2025 15:52

@Genevieva he obviously didn’t have a billion dollars but the Sandy Hook families were able to bankrupt him and last I heard were given control of assets from his news outlet. I know nothing further

Your correct response would be to boycott the BBC and refuse to pay your TV licence.

Hes only harming the ones that pay and support the beeb. Many of us don't

He's only hurting those who pay the licence fee. Perhaps they can do a fundraising campaign that BBC fans can donate to if Trump wins? I'm sure they would gladly donate!

lazyarse123 · 15/11/2025 15:56

I think he should sue and I really don't like the man. It wasn't a one off "mistake" they did it twice on two different programmes.

If he does sue they may find more examples of wrongdoing and there will be something. Gaza anyone.? Maxine Croxall, that was biased against women.

This happens all the time. NHS payments for negligence are eye watering. It doesn’t make litigation the wrong response per se. One of the reasons litigation exists is to act as a deterrent. Another is to right a wrong. I’d say it’s incumbent on the BBC not to get it wrong and to fess up unreservedly and without qualification when they do.

My view is the sum proposed ($1 to $ billion dollars) is ridiculous. You have pointed out that it might be more realistic than I thought, as billion dollar awards have been made before. That is indeed ruinous. For all our criticisms of the BBC and its licence fee arrangement, this would be a sad reason for it to fall. But my suspicion is that Trump is more creative than that. He’s also extremely fond of Britain, entitled to a British passport and his sister lives here. This is grandstanding. He wants something, but it’s probably not money. Maybe it’s more friendly coverage. Who knows. We will have to wait and see.

Dabralor · 15/11/2025 15:59

I’ve been so surprised by how many people seem to hate the BBC on here so much, they’d happily watch as Trump effectively attempts to kill off the institution entirely.

I’m as angry and disappointed as the next person. But do I want the concept of an impartial, free and fair news broadcaster to be torpedoed in this day and age? No. And I think we ought to be very wary of the context of this story arc. Who serves to win if all our news becomes subscription based or paid for by ads? Because it isn’t us.

im sorry but I really want the BBC to continue holding those in power to account, albeit to higher standards than we see here. Gutting the service and giving Trump billions of dollars isn’t the way to do that.

They'll just increase the licence fee and the bbc fans can suck it up and pay up
