Yip A whole Thread about Tesco Breaded Haddock

Okay I'm feeling a bit outraged this morning. Over Fish!

Tesco Frozen Haddock Fillets 500g - it was £3.5 for a while. Then recently it went up to £4 which was quite a jump - about 12.5% This was recently as in the last 3 months because I am still smarting from the increase when I buy it.

Doing my Tesco Shop just now and it's gone up again to £4.40. So another jump of 10%

So in the last 3 months this box of fish has gone up 22.5%

And people wonder why they are struggling to control their food shop bill.

What can have happened to cause such a large increase over 12 weeks approx.

YANBU - Tesco are raking in the profits and putting up the price
YABU - Tesco are suffering this much in increased costs and having to pass it on to customers

YANBU 😡

TakeMe2Insanity · 15/11/2025 10:10

YANBU. We are all creatures of habit and tend to buy the same things therefore regardless of what companies say we know, we see, we feel that price increase.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 15/11/2025 10:12

I recently found something very similar in Sainsbury’s - half price with my Nectar card! So £2 something instead of £4 something.

YANBU 😡

thank you. I mean it's a bit much to get another rise when I'm still getting over the 'shock' of the first one.

Plus these are not small rises. Both are large rises.

Can't decide if I should stock up in case of further rises or refuse to buy any more of it out of principle (although that might just be cutting off my nose to spite my face kind of thing)

I just noticed it immediately as I had it in my shopping basket over the last week but had not checked out yet. I went back in today to add some more to the basket and noticed it immediately.

Imagine if everything in your basket went up 22.5% in 3 months.

I mean I struggle to keep my shop under £400 per month know (that's just me plus a very fussy dog that eats lots of meat/fish). I keep tinkering about with what I eat to try and keep to my budget but it's getting impossible.

Gosh at £2 I think I would be buying 20 boxes of fish. That's a bargain.

I actually think Tesco's are quite good normally but I'm starting to find Waitrose cheaper for many a thing (over Tesco) so I tend to go between the two.

Perhaps I need to branch out to Sainsbury's.

I don't want to spend half my week doing food shopping and having to get bits from loads of different supermarkets.

I can't be bothered with that plus the delivery charges would negate the savings (if you get it home delivered)

TheCurious0range · 15/11/2025 10:24

I'd hold fire IME that means it'll be on offer at £3.50 next month

Also not trying to be pedantic but £4.40 is a 25.5% increase on £3.50 so even worse

1985checkshirt · 15/11/2025 10:27

I found the same so bought the hearty food company ones last week £2 for 4. They are nice and teen dc didn't notice id changed.

PiccadillyPurple · 15/11/2025 10:28

Part of the problem is price-blurring by loyalty card deals. There is a sense that the 'normal' price is artificially inflated, so they can knock £1 off or have a 'two for £8' deal on something like breaded fish at £4.40.

I often get 'savings' of about £5 per £50 of shopping from the Tesco Clubcard but I see it more that it's taking my shop back to what it should have cost in the first place.

Needtosoundoffandbreathe · 15/11/2025 10:30

Until about 6 weeks ago, M&S used to sell two items from their easy to cook type range for £10. Now there's no discount meaning the price has gone up by 23%.

Tamfs · 15/11/2025 10:30

@PiccadillyPurple is totally right, it's all a game so you feel you're getting more of a bargain with the loyalty cards. I rotate between whichever cod or haddock is half price each week. Same with frozen chips.

RandomMess · 15/11/2025 10:34

Perhaps you need to be more strategic. Look at what you will eat in 3 week blocks. Stock up in what is on “offer” as you purchase each week then you will hopefully buying it all at on “offer” price over 4/5 weeks.

You might be right. In which case I will definately stock up.

I worked out the two increases and added them together but 'happy' to be told the increase is more and my outrage is even more justified!

Probably should have used a calculator not my old brain.😀

I'll need to check that out then thanks. Surely the fish content must be different or something for such a big price difference. If not I'll be stocking up on these before they up the price.

Yes I'm the same. I never look on it like real savings. They must think we are daft.

It looks an absolute steal compared to the price of fresh haddock. Or indeed the price of fish and chips from the fish shop. Have a look at the composition @WatchTheHolly.

I don't however disagree that prices are rising exponentially to earnings. I'm still in shock at £4.50 for Heinz ketchup. Tesco's was £1.40 and does the job.

Bleedin heck. Soon we will all have to stop eating due to the cost.

I read an article a while ago about Waitrose versus the cheaper supermarkets during price hikes. Apparently people who normally shop at Waitrose haven't noticed a difference much in their bills but people at aldis have. Whilst Waitrose is obviously more expensive they don't shift their prices around as much so it's more consistent to plan for.

YouDriveMeCrazyButICanDoThatMyself · 15/11/2025 10:44

Birds Eye 10 fish fingers are £4.50.

Fish fingers used to be a cheap, quick kids meal-not any more!
At least you get 4 good sized Haddock for £4.40.

Yes it's convenience which makes me buy the same things each week I guess although I am not so keen on cod. It seems blander tasting to me than haddock. Might have to give it another go and start paying attention to what is on offer.
It just takes longer to do your shop when you have to keep checking prices and what's on offer.

I guess that is what they are relying on.

Yes i do stock up when I see things I buy on offer. However I found i was going over my budget each week but thinking oh well I'll save next week. Then next week came and I would go over again.

Somehow I never spent less to stay within budget for the month.

I mean I must be saving money but losing control of my budget at the same time which feels kind of unsatisfactory.

Ha! Snap.

Same pedantic mindset here, Curious. First thing I thought reading the OP was "you can't just add percentages of different base amounts, it's actually almost 26%."

I'm sure our high school maths teachers would be proud of us.

And yes, OP, that's a ridiculous price hike. I expect it's so they can 'discount' it later at tell us they're saving us money.

Home made fish and chips never taste as good as the ones from the fish and chip shop though!! They are always far yummier (bad for us?)

I haven't been buying many takeaways this year so perhaps if I treat myself i will get a shock at the price of a fish supper.
