Okay I'm feeling a bit outraged this morning. Over Fish!

Tesco Frozen Haddock Fillets 500g - it was £3.5 for a while. Then recently it went up to £4 which was quite a jump - about 12.5% This was recently as in the last 3 months because I am still smarting from the increase when I buy it.

Doing my Tesco Shop just now and it's gone up again to £4.40. So another jump of 10%

So in the last 3 months this box of fish has gone up 22.5%

And people wonder why they are struggling to control their food shop bill.

What can have happened to cause such a large increase over 12 weeks approx.

YANBU - Tesco are raking in the profits and putting up the price
YABU - Tesco are suffering this much in increased costs and having to pass it on to customers

We occasionally get fish and chips usually when dh has a hospital appt which is an hour away normally at 4.30 so easier to have that. It was £17. for 2 fish and 1 chips i thought that was extortionate but sucked it up as a very rare treat. But we had it again on Thursday £19.65 I even asked the chap if he'd got my order right. He had so that's the end of that particular meal.

My dad popped over yesterday unexpectedly and it was during lunch so he suggested a takeaway. It was cheaper to go to the local café than to get takeaway. For the exact same meal. Mad isn't it? Takeaway used to be a treat that was cheaper than going out...

The big supermarkets will wait until a really cold snap of weather to announce huge profits, that way folks are less likely to chuck eggs at their windows in protest.

Then again who the hell can afford to waste an egg these days..

Its just Brexit kicking in. We voted to leave the single market. Retailers have been absorbing increased costs for as long as they can but it was always going to be passed on to the customer eventually.

They're still really cheap in some places. We were in Cleethorpes last summer and got change from a tenner for 2 x fish and chips - excellent quality too.

No wonder food banks are so popular. But breaded Haddock is not always guaranteed.

I know what you mean. Fish Fingers used to be a go to staple for something quick and easy, relatively healthy and not too expensive.

Birds Eye have always been a rip off mind and even worse when they use that horrible tasteless bland pollock fish inside. You have to be careful you are buying the haddock or cod ones.

And it looks sod all like the white flakey fish goodness picture on the box
Thin insipid grey crap...yum yum😋🤮

Katemax82 · 15/11/2025 18:53

I'm pissed off about mince doubling in price, especially as I use 1kg of it per family meal (the 29%stuff so cheapest).
Also chicken breast fillets are vile these days, you used to be able to take one out of the packet and cook it as it is .now you have to dissect them do they are not gross

Emmz1510 · 16/11/2025 10:12

Yanbu. I never fail to find the rising prices in grocery shops utterly depressing.

Gettingbysomehow · 16/11/2025 10:17

Im saving hard for an operation privately as the NHS is so shit and as a result can't afford meat and fish any more. I've had to go vegetarian. I mostly use frozen veg and cook everything from scratch. I've saved 100s of £££ theast year and Im much healthier too.
I went into Marks ghe other day and couldn't believe the price of their food, a spanish omelette for one nearly £5. Sod that.

Umidontknow · 16/11/2025 10:36

We've given up with tesco, our weekly shop was going up every week despite not really changing what we brought. We make the longer trip to aldi now, it might cost more in diesel, but we get a lot more for our money and honestly prefer a lot of their stuff taste wise too.

InveterateWineDrinker · 16/11/2025 10:45

I don't know how accurate this is, but someone once told me that the price of fish shoots up at this time of year as the year's quota is used up. What is available is much scarcer.

Somersetbaker · 16/11/2025 15:45

In my local chippy haddock in batter is £8, cod is £7.40. They have a sign up that explains that the fish quota in the Barents Sea, where most of our white fish comes from, has been cut by 25% and that has caused the price to rise. Even fish from the travelling fish van, mackerel, sole, plaice etc, all from Lyme Bay is £££.

Just laughed at this old thread I started. Tesco haddock is now £5 and has been for quite a while so probably due another increase soon. I am really starting to struggle with the amount I am spending on food. What huge increases in food prices are you noticing?

Haddock is more expensive than cod, I can't really tell the difference, they taste the same to me.

TheeNotoriousPIG · 13/06/2026 14:07

For me, it's meat and fish. It is somewhat fortunate that, due to work, if I do pop to the supermarket, it's later on in the evenings... when prices have been reduced. It's a bit hit and miss as to what you end up with, but I put things in the freezer (I live rurally, and miles away from the shop, before anyone jumps on me for hoarding food) and bring them out as I need them.

If I find anywhere with a very good fish counter, I buy whole salmons, cut them up myself, and freeze them. It works out a lot cheaper than to buy the salmon slivers that the supermarkets sell. I'm also lucky that someone that I vaguely know enjoys fishing, but hates a plentiful kind of fish, so he freezes and drops them off for those of us that like that kind of fish... for free, as it's on his way.

I've started buying branded items from Amazon, as it's cheaper than the nearest supermarkets.

Young's fish fingers are a real let down. Nothing like as advertised, small amount of greyish fish . I complained and they sent a voucher- As if I want more of them!

YANBU. We are all creatures of habit and tend to buy the same things therefore regardless of what companies say we know, we see, we feel that price increase.

Some of us are creatures of haddock...

oliviaAustin · 14/06/2026 07:56

Go to Aldi. I manage to shop there for 2 adults for about £60 a week.

MikeRafone · 14/06/2026 08:02

Options hot chocolate was £3.50 and has crept up to £5.40 over the last 18 months. Then suddenly there will be a store card discount to £4.00

Cathedral cheese is £3.30 in lidl but £3.75 in Sainsbury

In its 2025/2026 financial year (ending February 28, 2026), Sainsbury's reported a Retail underlying operating profit of £1,025 million. Its statutory profit after tax was £393 million

Sainsbury's does not directly sell its customers' personal data. Instead, the supermarket generates an estimated £300 million a year by operating a retail media platform (Nectar360) that allows brands to run targeted advertising using anonymized data

its a con and we are all being scammed to pay extra

MikeRafone · 14/06/2026 08:29

Tesco is also making £300 million from club card data and £2,403 million profit from the stores

cost of keeping share holders rich crisis
