Lost my ring, handed in, pub denying so.

So, 3 weeks ago on a rare night out I lost a ring (was just a tad tispy!). I phoned the pub, taxi etc the next morning but no joy.
Put an insurance claim in which is currently being processed.
Last night my DD found a FB post with a photo of my ring and a caption saying it had been handed into the bar the following afternoon of my visit.
I phoned the bar, and the manager (he said he hadn't been there long) looked, spoke to staff who said they knew nothing about it but there was another manager he could message and he'd ask them to phone me back.
Since then I've received a reply from the lady who handed it in with a description of the staff member and possible name.
If it doesn't reappear do I have any recourse? I'm sure the police won't be interested.
The ring is worth about £1,000.
AIBU to think I'll get it back?

Surely CCTV will back up the person who posted on Facebook handing it in and the person who was behind the bar?

Hopefull. That's if the CCTV is available...

Could you post on Facebook what's happened? The pub won't want the bad press

That's my next move I think.

I think that’s a must.

Didn't think about going round pawnbrokers and jewellers.

Someone in my area retrieved their stolen property that way. Shall link a relevant newspaper article.

It then emerged that Richardson had walked into the Joseph Bonnar Jeweller’s store in Edinburgh’s Thistle Street and sold a pair of Opal earrings, a necklace and two aquamarine earrings for a total of £1400.
He did so in full view of CCTV – and even provided his own full name and address to the shop’s proprietor as he carried out his scheme.
The victims of the theft were informed of the discovery by cops – and decided to visit other jewellers’ shops to see if they could find any more stolen goods.
Fiscal depute Eilidh Robertson told the court that they then went to James Ness and Sons in the capital’s Queensferry Street.
She said: “They told staff about the break in and described the items and staff immediately went quiet.
“The proprietor then entered wearing one of the rings that was missing.
“He denied having any of the stolen goods but the owners saw a pair of earrings in a cabinet that they believed were theirs."

I phoned my insurers today who said it's up to me if I want to contact the police, as far as they're concerned it's still a loss to be replaced so at least that's some recompense.
I then called the police and gave them all the info. Someone will call me tomorrow to say what if anything they'll do.
Not much of an update. I haven't heard anything more from the bar since I said the police will now be involved. It hasn't jolted them unfortunately.

I think you are expecting too much of the pub. They could have lots of staff and quite a few working that day. They are busy and someone hands in a ring. If they knew the value of it, they could have chucked it in the till but they could have put it anywhere. Pubs are big and full to the brim. Pots, drawers, boxes of shizzle.

Expecting them to have a “high value lost property policy” is a bit much. They are a pub not an expensive hotel.

Keep asking because maybe the person who it was handed into hasn’t worked a shift since.

It isn’t up to the pub to look after your ring. That was your job.

The police will not be interested. How the hell are you going to prove who has it?

I remain hopeful.

So is the person your honest lady described denying it happened?

if I was the honest lady I’d be straight in there trying to help you out further as that’s shocking. Maybe once they see the lady who handed it in they’ll remember about it.

I can only presume so, the email said he'd spoken to all the staff.
The lady and the witnesses who found it are happy to give the police statements.

Got to take good care of your ring.

I've never lost anything before. Really not like me not to notice.

Most places have policies about how long they hold lost property for - usually two weeks.
It's possible that it was handed in but was reclaimed by the finder after that period had elapsed.

The finder didn't leave her details unfortunately but is happy to speak to the police.

If your finder is really on board with helping you she could ask the pub for the cctv footage of her handing it in under a subject access request. Hopefully would put the wind up the bar staff to ‘find’ it.

That's good to know. She's been extremely supportive.

Just to give you some hope... I work at a chain restaurant and we have over 150 staff and it's very busy. Often lost property is just kind of thrown into the office or a cupboard as we don't have time to deal with it instantly. Occasionally things go missing, or the next manager genuinely has no idea something has been handed in and can't find it. Usually these things are relocated eventually. What I do is always take contact details for people who ask about lost property, even if they don't know for sure where they lost it, just in case it turns up. I also message in our group chat to find out if anyone has seen it and make people aware that a customer is looking, in case it is found. I have also looked back through CCTV if the item is left somewhere visible.
I genuinely can't see anyone taking it, unless it's been sat uncollected for a long time. I think it's far more likely it has been misplaced.

They don't have any recording methods apparently. When I worked in a similar environment all losses and enquiries were logged.

I would ask the lady who handed it in and the other people who were with her at the time to go in with you and ask in front of that person.
It will definitely be found then

MungoforPresident · 17/11/2025 20:46

The police may well help you if you are not in a really busy area, re. crime. I used to live in a rural area and someone nicked a garden trough overnight. Two officers turned up the following day, and they resolved it for me too.

They nailed the thief!

madaboutpurple · 17/11/2025 20:48

Ah I hope you do find it Op, please bear in mind never take a ring off anywhere in public in future. Next time you go ask for details of the highest members of staff if it is a chain and they might suddenly find it.

Susiy · 17/11/2025 21:05

A colleague left their laptop in a taxi a few years ago while abroad.
I phoned the taxi company on her behalf as she had a return flight to catch.
They called back to say nothing had been found/handed in at the depot.
I then gave a full description of the driver, age bracket and clothing he was wearing and sure enough he arrived a few hours later at my hotel with the missing laptop.

I’m no fan of the police but I think they would be interested. Not least because you’ve done half the work for them!

No, they don't even do anything for things as high as £50,000, so this won't even be considered, unless they're being really nice. I got broken into whilst at home, 3 guys kicked the door in, they said because they hadn't assaulted me that there wasn't even money for an e-fit.

Oblomov25 · 17/11/2025 21:49

I'd report it to the police, to at least I get a crime reference number and then tell the pub that you have done so and give them the crime reference number.
I'd then post that on the Facebook page.

deste · 17/11/2025 22:04

I think its difficult to take stolen goods to pawn shops etc. I think you need proof of ownership, you do where i live. You could take photographs to any of them to show them the ring just in case.

Whatlovedoes · 17/11/2025 22:13

Oh OP, I’m sorry.

Lesson learnt I suppose - and it’s one I also learnt the hard way. That taking sentimental items out when you can’t handle your drink is never a good idea!

Not necessarily. The newspaper report l linked to above had two Edinburgh jewellers who bought stolen goods without getting proof of ownership - though it seems they required an address. At least the first jeweller reported it; the second bloke tried to deny having them.

Franjipanl8r · 17/11/2025 23:10

If you live in a small rural area then the police might be interested. If you live in a city then no chance. I had my expensive bike stolen from my office cycle rack and the police couldn’t even be bothered to turn up to look at the CCTV that showed the criminals loading my bike into their van!

JungAtHeart · 17/11/2025 23:43

That’s the issue with handing things in 🙁 I don’t anymore. A few years ago I found a really beautiful, and expensive piece of jewellery in a restaurant. I told the manager that I’d found it and I would like to return it to its rightful owner. I left my phone number and email address to pass on to anyone that contacted them. The manager asked me to leave the piece with him. I refused. I was on holiday at the time. Nobody ever contacted me …

Makes you wonder if they even bothered to pass your details on. People just don't seem bothered about morals as much these days.

Small market town so maybe.
Sorry to hear your story. Thieving gits.
