Lost my ring, handed in, pub denying so.

So, 3 weeks ago on a rare night out I lost a ring (was just a tad tispy!). I phoned the pub, taxi etc the next morning but no joy.
Put an insurance claim in which is currently being processed.
Last night my DD found a FB post with a photo of my ring and a caption saying it had been handed into the bar the following afternoon of my visit.
I phoned the bar, and the manager (he said he hadn't been there long) looked, spoke to staff who said they knew nothing about it but there was another manager he could message and he'd ask them to phone me back.
Since then I've received a reply from the lady who handed it in with a description of the staff member and possible name.
If it doesn't reappear do I have any recourse? I'm sure the police won't be interested.
The ring is worth about £1,000.
AIBU to think I'll get it back?

Definitely report.to the police.

fruitbrewhaha · 16/11/2025 20:17

I think you are expecting too much of the pub. They could have lots of staff and quite a few working that day. They are busy and someone hands in a ring. If they knew the value of it, they could have chucked it in the till but they could have put it anywhere. Pubs are big and full to the brim. Pots, drawers, boxes of shizzle.

Expecting them to have a “high value lost property policy” is a bit much. They are a pub not an expensive hotel.

Keep asking because maybe the person who it was handed into hasn’t worked a shift since.

It isn’t up to the pub to look after your ring. That was your job.

The police will not be interested. How the hell are you going to prove who has it?

AlgaeThrives · 16/11/2025 20:23

So is the person your honest lady described denying it happened?

if I was the honest lady I’d be straight in there trying to help you out further as that’s shocking. Maybe once they see the lady who handed it in they’ll remember about it.

Bit like your post then?

111 is NHS not the police 🤦🏻‍♀️

Laura95167 · 16/11/2025 21:02

Id report it to the police, send the FB picture and info. Even if they do nothing itll help your insurance claim.

Id also publicly forward the post to their FB wall highlighting that they arent returning it.. terrible behaviour from them

Joeninety · 16/11/2025 21:26

Got to take good care of your ring.

Well no change really. Spoke to the manager who says he's spoken to all the staff, even the one I described it was handed in to apparently.
All I could really say was that my insurers and police (101!) will be in touch as statements etc will need to be obtained as they've either lost it or its been stolen while in their possession.

Have you reported to the police yet? I’d go in, if you can and to show them the Facebook post and that it’s clearly been stolen as the lady can describe who she handed it to etc.

Namechangerage · 16/11/2025 21:32

Lostuser · 16/11/2025 20:37

I think they are making the point that simply saying it won’t help… isn’t helpful. Saying ‘111 is NHS and 101 is police’ is!

Surely CCTV will back up the person who posted on Facebook handing it in and the person who was behind the bar?

Solmum1964 · 16/11/2025 22:09

Most places have policies about how long they hold lost property for - usually two weeks.
It's possible that it was handed in but was reclaimed by the finder after that period had elapsed.

NigellaAwesome · 16/11/2025 22:46

If your finder is really on board with helping you she could ask the pub for the cctv footage of her handing it in under a subject access request. Hopefully would put the wind up the bar staff to ‘find’ it.

This is exactly what I was going to suggest!

Theslummymummy · 17/11/2025 10:01

Yep this is why my police officer grandad told us never to hand stuff in to public places, he had plenty of reports of staff dividing the cash in wallets out.

LushLemonTart · 17/11/2025 10:13

I hope you get it back @AJLOAL .

I don't know how some people sleep at night.

Acg1991 · 17/11/2025 10:16

Just to give you some hope... I work at a chain restaurant and we have over 150 staff and it's very busy. Often lost property is just kind of thrown into the office or a cupboard as we don't have time to deal with it instantly. Occasionally things go missing, or the next manager genuinely has no idea something has been handed in and can't find it. Usually these things are relocated eventually. What I do is always take contact details for people who ask about lost property, even if they don't know for sure where they lost it, just in case it turns up. I also message in our group chat to find out if anyone has seen it and make people aware that a customer is looking, in case it is found. I have also looked back through CCTV if the item is left somewhere visible.
I genuinely can't see anyone taking it, unless it's been sat uncollected for a long time. I think it's far more likely it has been misplaced.

I would definitely go back to the pub with the description and possible name of the person it was handed in to and your evidence from social media, messages whatever.
If no luck I would definitely call the police as this is theft of £1k. The pub should have CCTV and you should demand it be looked at to see what happened to it after being handed in.

‘Demanding’ the cctv be looked at won’t help, If the lady who handed it in can give a time let the pub manager know so he can check cctv, he however cannot confirm nor deny to anyone other than the police what he views on the cctv, he may use that information for internal investigation procedures but cannot share with just anyone requesting this info what he has seen unfortunately.
We have a lot of protected rights under the use and viewing of cctv captured on public premises.

helpfulperson · 17/11/2025 14:56

Do pubs really have CCTV in them? We really do live in a big brother society if we can't even go for a drink without surveillance.

Legally they should afaik? Pubs have fights so need cctv for evidence.

It's often a condition of their licence.

You'll need to report it to claim on your insurance.

Tell your insurance company everything and let the bar manager know as it may be investigated and that should flush out the dishonest person.

If I was the lady that handed it in I’d be round there speaking to that staff member, in front of management.
I can’t abide dishonesty.

I hope you get it back op.

BillieWiper · 17/11/2025 19:05

I guess if the person who it seems like received it at the pub denies all knowledge there's not that much you can do but tell police. That might help your insurance claim to have police crime no.

Beentherecomeouttheotherside · 17/11/2025 19:09

Something similar happened to me - I lost a ring, I was told it had been handed in to a shop. I patiently listend to the shop staff saying no it hadn't been handed in and anyway they couldn't find it etc. I politely said, ok it's a police matter now. Wow, a few hours later I got a message to say they had found it in a drawer!

Blappengrap · 17/11/2025 19:33

I'm a bit late to this but you need to make it too hot to handle, post it all over Facebook including the detail that you know which member of staff it was handed into (don't describe or name them though) and maybe offer a reward for it's return.

But basically you need it visible everywhere.

This happened to my step daughter’s diamond tennis bracelet. But the lovely woman who found it took a photo of the person she handed it in to without them knowing as well as a photo of the bracelet.

When my stepdaughter and her husband went in to get it back they didn’t mention the photo of the individual, just the photo of the bracelet and the chap in charge was quite adamant that none of his staff had seen the bracelet and was quite sniffy about it until he was confronted by the photo of himself and crumbled!

He tried to bluster his way out of it by saying he had forgotten and then it was extremely painful for him to admit that he had taken it home for safe keeping but would have it the next day.

Clearly he had given it to his wife or girlfriend and that must have been an awkward conversation having to take it back from them!

He had it the next day and was exceedingly smarmy offering them a bottle of plonk!

Report to the police even if they do nothing.

So dishonest but what a great result!
