Tv licence ?

AlwaysHopefull89 · 14/11/2025 11:34

Does anyone still pay their tv licence? If NOT, why not?

we don’t watch bbc at all, stream any live tv or even watch live tv to be honest.

our bill was £180 and I can’t justify paying that anymore if we aren’t using the services? I’m worried if I don’t pay next year when it’s due I’ll get a knock at our door 😂😂

AIBU to cancel ours?

It doesn't sound like you should be paying at all so best off cancelling

I begrudgingly pay for it. Dont watch anything on the BBC. Use to watch ceebeebies when my DD was younger and loved peaky blinders, but nothing of interest since then. I only pay as when I last checked they asked about watching any channel 4 programs. I watch a lot of that, especially in work (work from home) shows like come dine with me and property shows are things I can have on for background noise, look up at the food or houses now and again without distraction. There isn't anything on other streaming services that could replace that for me, so am stuck with it. Also love a lot of their comedy programs. Don't get why I have to pay the BBC for this when the 4 app has adverts

pinkstripeycat · 16/11/2025 03:04

My son is at uni. His flatmate has a TV license and she got a threatening letter. One room in their flat is empty and it also got a threatening letter.

CalmShaker · 16/11/2025 04:03

I pay it but have become increasingly reluctant to, I think it's overpriced. The BBC is far too big with some incredibly low quality thrown into the mix and with the current scandal (although I've seen a left wing bias on it for years) its frustrating

Kimura · 16/11/2025 05:23

I pay for it and am happy to. I'd pay it just for watching BBC content if that was the case...The Attenborough/nature docs, Theroux, Traitors, music and documentary content, sport.

I have (I think) all of the notable streaming services (and a few smaller personal interest ones) and purely in terms of a subscription fee for iPlayer, I'd say it falls somewhere in the middle in terms of value for money.

And while it's not a deal breaker, I do like the idea of supporting something that provides educational content, and a bit of companionship for older, lonely people.

LilySad91 · 15/11/2025 14:25

Exactly. There's no law that says you have to make it as easy as possible for the BBC to fine you by giving them info about you that they'd like to know.

Just as there's no law that you have to notify any company to let them know you don't use their products.

Just have no comms with the BBC and you'll be fine. They can only fine you if you give them the info they want

There's no law that says you have to make it as easy as possible for the BBC to fine you

How does declaring you don't need a TV licence make it easier for them to fine you? If you don't need a license, there will be no evidence of you needing a TV licence, so how would a fine be enforced?

Kimura · 16/11/2025 05:42

whitepuffyclouds · 15/11/2025 10:56

I'm not a lawyer, but I don't believe that YouTube counts for TV licensing purposes, so no, I don't. I'm sure someone more knowledgeable will correct me if I'm wrong.

If you're watching a live broadcast on YouTube (sport, news channel etc) then it does.

I expect this catches out or confuses a fair few people. The major streaming apps were traditionally on demand only, but Netflix, Prime, even Disney now all regularly broadcast live programming.

Love user generated content on YouTube does not require a license.

JudgeBread · 14/11/2025 11:55

Nope. Never paid it never will.
I'll never put money in the pockets of any organisation that thinks threatening and bullying people into giving them money is a good business strategy.

I don't watch live TV, I don't listen to the radio. I don't need their product. I don't have Netflix either and funnily enough they've never put a letter through my door threatening to prosecute me if I don't start buying their service.

I've been recycling their silly letters for 6 years, nothing will ever come of it. They can't actually afford to legally pursue every person who doesn't pay for not paying - I used to be a postie and I posted hundreds of those letters a week, never anything formal or official though. Just the "dear homeowner" ones. They're completely toothless but know which words to use to scare people into paying which I just disagree with on a fundamental moral level.

So off they can fuck.

If you don't watch live TV or listen to the radio, you're not required to have a licence and nobody is asking you to pay for one.

Not wanting to give them money on some moral ground is irrelevant. You're simply not paying for a service you don't use.

I don't have Netflix either and funnily enough they've never put a letter through my door threatening to prosecute me if I don't start buying their service.

It's a criminal offense to watch TV without a license. It's not a criminal offense not to subscribe to Netflix. You might not agree with that, but we can't pick and choose which laws we obey.

I've been recycling their silly letters for 6 years

That feels like a pointless waste of time, when it's incredibly easy to stop those letters by simply showing them that you don't need a license.

HelenaWaiting · 16/11/2025 01:41

Yep. And all the people who were glued to The Traitors, but they don't watch live TV so that's fine. I guess it's fine skipping out on paying if you know that others are picking up the tab for you.

Some just don’t watch that way, I haven’t been glued to watching any programme for ages. We don’t watch that much but if we are it’s an episode streamed when we’re ready.

Being glued to a programme at any just isn’t relevant, it’s been ages since doing that.

Imissgoldengrahams · 16/11/2025 07:20

I watch the likes of eastenders etc but never paid for a TV licence

Freysimo · 16/11/2025 07:51

The BBC can't possibly prosecute everyone who doesn't have a licence, people àre cancelling in droves. I pay because I watch some progs and use Sounds and iPlayer but two of my elderly neighbours refuse to pay at all since BBC cancelled the over 75 perk. No one has come for them! Make it subscription I say.

Well it costs the BBC to send out their " threatening " letters so all good imo.

I don't watch live TV and don't have a telly, but I happily pay my licence fée as I would be lost without Radios 3 4 and the World Service.

Well more fool you.

So those of us who are honest & pay it, sub people like you who lie & use it, but don't pay.

its nothing to brag about.

Well there are people on this openly admitting they pay the licence fee for the radio even though they have no need too so it might even itself out?

x2boys · 16/11/2025 08:51

AutumnLeavesFallingFast · 16/11/2025 02:11

Yes, I pay it. It's less than 50p per day it's well worth that for the sport alone. I enjoy the politics shows & do much more it offers.

people cheating the system are disgraceful
putting up the cost for those of us who do pay. It's no different than shop lifting.

Many people just dont value the bbc or watch live tv
It's the arrogance on here by BBC fans who beove we should all enjoy the same stuff they do that gets me.

NatalieH2220 · 16/11/2025 08:55

We haven’t for about a year now. Xmas is the only time we used to watch ‘live tv’ and it’s not worth the cost for a couple of weeks! We’ve had a couple of letters but nothing more.

meow!

If you’re happy to pay a fee every year to simply watch TV, then pay it gladly. No point being wound up by others not paying. A subscription would eliminate this scenario entirely, so we’ll see if it ever gets to that point.

I doubt there are the same number of people paying it for the radio as who are just not paying.

i don't get why they think this is ok if they don't also think shop lifting or burglary is ok. It amounts to the same thing.

meow - what are you on about??

It does wind me up because them stealing/theiving costs ME more. The same as shop theft costs us all more.

I don't actually believe the vast majority who don't pay don't watch anything that's covered by the licence.

I do believe there are people who don't enjoy sport or political shows (or crap I do enjoy. Same as I don't watch a lot of popular stuff I think is crap- though no idea what channel it's on 🤣🤣)

it's less than 50p per day, would be even cheaper if people paid honestly. I think lots if people don't consider it 'live' if they record it, or watch it on screen not a tv.

Why don't you belive it ?
Netflix is much cheaper but I dont go around telling people they should pay for it to make it cheaper for me
I appreciate that some dont watch it or have any interest it
Why can,t you appreciate the same for the BBC?

I think you’re an outlier. Binge watching is a huge thing - people glued to shows is pretty normal. In fact casual TV consumption is the thing that’s fading out.

And if you’re streaming Traitors, that’s on iPlayer and also attracts a TV licence fee.

Did none of you non payers watch Celebrity Traitors?

Im not renewing my TV licence in December. I lived celebrity traitors, but not enough to spend £180 on. Id actually be better of checking into a hotel on finals night and binge watching it on their iPlayer.

Nah I'm not giving them my details so they can just start putting my name on the letters. Everyone I know who has taken time out of their day to fill in the "I don't need a TV license" form has started getting threatening letters again within 6 months, only now they've got their full name on them. So they can fuck off with that too.

I'm aware of the law I just think how they go about enforcing it is low, scummy and ridiculous.

Bend over harder though, I don't think they can quite reach your fucking large colon from that angle.
