Tv licence ?

AlwaysHopefull89 · 14/11/2025 11:34

Does anyone still pay their tv licence? If NOT, why not?

we don’t watch bbc at all, stream any live tv or even watch live tv to be honest.

our bill was £180 and I can’t justify paying that anymore if we aren’t using the services? I’m worried if I don’t pay next year when it’s due I’ll get a knock at our door 😂😂

AIBU to cancel ours?

I think it’s amazing how many people watch no live TV, especially news!

There are plenty of other ways to keep up with the news and current affairs, not just watching tv.

Apparently I need one based on my answers ?!

Ahhh, I see what I did now, tricked me on those last 2 questions lol

I’ve not paid for one for over 10 years. Never had a knock at the door. Get a threatening letter every few years reminding me I need one, I just go in the website and register that I don’t.

I get an absurd threatening letter about once ever 6 weeks but have never had a visit

anniegun · 14/11/2025 12:50

I would pay it just to listen to Sara Cox.

I know. I just thought most people would also watch TV news and current affairs shows like Newsnight, Question Time etc.
It maybe explains some of the discussion posts on here, that a lot of people (seemingly) don’t!

The last one - you answered "no" to "can you confirm that your household never records live TV?" It tricks you with the way the answers are organised and the fact that you would press "no" to all the others. Click yes" on the last question

Edit: just seen that you recognised this and updated what you said!

Whammyammy · 14/11/2025 12:54

Not had a TV licence for years. Don't watch live tv or any of the bbc rubbish.
Look on fb for "TV licence non payers uk", so many new people cancelling after the edited/fake news from bbc.
Totally waste of £175

You can watch news on other platforms without a license. Or even listen on radio, including bbc if you like. All perfectly above board.

God no brain numbing stuff. There are better ways to be informed. Radio, reading. You’re being hyped up daily with rolling news.

You don't need a TV licence for radio. Or BBC Sounds.

You can’t watch any live TV without a tv licence. Radio yes; TV, no.
For example, you can’t watch live Sky News without a TV licence.

I do read a lot of news, but can’t imagine not watching TV news too.

NimbleHiker · 14/11/2025 13:02

I only pay for a tv licence because i watch a lot of sport. I do think that the bbc drag out some of their dramas for far too long. Call the midwife should have finished years ago. Line of duty was just a pile of crap. The last good drama produced by the bbc was happy valley.

They are bullies. I filled in the declaration and still has a person from capita knock my door. Few weeks later more letters. Now I just throw them in the recycling bin.

What did they say when you answered the door did they demand entry into your home or anything?
I just did the declaration recently and even when they contacted me by email to confirm they still said something about buying a license because they still may visit as they know people are lying about it! They make me so mad, tv licence mafia!

That’s fine, I can’t believe how pre packaged it is, designed to provoke and keep people hooked. I last watched it years ago.

Honestly it’s not needed to be informed and I’d argue it’s having a negative impact.

They can ask for entry, not demand or force. They are just Capita sales people, as much authority as the milkman.
If they knock, just ask who they are and either just close the door in the clowns or tell them to Foxtrot Oscar, I prefer the latter with bullies

24 hour rolling news, I’d agree with you.
Shows like Question Time, Newsnight, Laura Kuenssberg on Sunday etc, though, add a lot to my news diet!

ObsidianTree · 14/11/2025 13:11

I paid for years enough though we don't watch tv. After several years of just paying, decided I would look into cancelling it. Have had it cancelled for maybe 2 years now. They send a yearly letter /email about it, I have to go online and answer some questions to confirm we don't watch tv, and then they leave you alone for another year.

We don't have sky or virgin tv and only use streaming like Netflix, Disney Plus. Always begrudged paying for something I don't use.

I suspect one day they may need to rethink their model as one day, most people will decide they don't need it!

77Fee · 14/11/2025 13:11

Did none of you non payers watch Celebrity Traitors?

No. No idea how it even works to get the winner.

@Swiftie1878fair enough if it’s to your taste. I can listen to analysis but not that kind of thing.

No. Was it supposed to be mandatory?

Aggiemidnight · 14/11/2025 13:15

I haven’t had one for years, I think around ten maybe more, don’t watch bbc or anything live.

dailyconniptions · 14/11/2025 13:15

No, I cancelled it and just watch Netflix. There's a form you can fill in to declare you don't need it.

You can ask them to show you their warrant to enter your home!
Plus, they'd have to witness you watching live television anyway, they don't have a leg to stand on.

missrachael · 14/11/2025 13:17

what do they do, come in pick up the remote and flick through it ?! 😆
