Tv licence ?

AlwaysHopefull89 · 14/11/2025 11:34

Does anyone still pay their tv licence? If NOT, why not?

we don’t watch bbc at all, stream any live tv or even watch live tv to be honest.

our bill was £180 and I can’t justify paying that anymore if we aren’t using the services? I’m worried if I don’t pay next year when it’s due I’ll get a knock at our door 😂😂

AIBU to cancel ours?

I was just interested re the Celebrity Traitors because apparently it had 12 million viewers.

I stopped paying mine a few years ago and it's honestly one of the best decisions I've ever made.

It's extremely easy to not get caught - you just don't answer the door if they knock on it, which is actually quite unlikely. And if you do answer it and it's a TV licence salesman, you just say 'no thanks' and shut the door.

The only way they can fine you is if you tell them you've watched something you weren't meant to.

There's no chance of getting jailed over this either. It only becomes a criminal matter if you don't pay the fine, which is usually one year's TV licence. And even then there hasn't been a jail sentence anywhere in the UK for non-payment of a TV licence fine in at least the last 15 years.

It seems as though a lot of posters on this thread don't buy a tv licence because they don't watch any live tv or anything on BBC iPlayer, but if I have understood correctly, you don't buy a licence, but you do one or both of these things. To my mind, that's akin to shoplifting if you know the staff won't stop you, although I appreciate shoplifting is a criminal offence.

Please correct me if I have misunderstood.

I do buy a tv licence. Another one here who likes celebrity traitors, but also drama series such as Shetland and Death in Paradise and quiz shows such as Pointless. I don't watch the news very often.

BedlingtonLint · 14/11/2025 14:58

Got rid of mine when I realised the only thing I've watched live in years is Inside No.9. In fact, that's the only thing on "normal" TV I've watched in years. Tried a few other things, but rarely made it through a whole episode, let alone a full series. TV's a bit shit these days, really.

I get by with podcasts, a Criterion Channel subscription and my extensive DVD collection.

It's a shame because I used to love TV, and the BBC and Channel 4 in particular, but there's nothing for me there now.

I think about 23 million households still have licences so still plenty to watch it. Usually people on these threads don't have a licence so it skews it to seem like most don't. I replied because OP asked who did or didn't have one

I think it’s amazing how many people watch no live TV, especially news!

I have the internet for news, and it’s normally quicker and less biased (source dependent).

Lovecatssowonderfullypretty · 14/11/2025 15:03

Well, we dont have a TV or similar service. However, we are radio addicts. Technically we are exempt from the licence but we both feel that, whilst not technically wrong, it is unethical not to.

Besides, John' Finnemore is worth it!

So are you saying you won't get caught, are you watching live TV without a licence.

Tiredofwhataboutery · 14/11/2025 15:06

Ive recently cancelled mines, don’t watch live tv and used to watch Iplayer a little but nowhere near enough to justify the monthly charge. I would say if you do cancel do it properly through the website. You are six months in credit if paying by DD so get refunded £90. If you just cancel Dd then your tv licence will run for another six months.

Genevieva · 14/11/2025 15:08

I paid it out of habit for a long time, even when the TV died, but I stopped a few years ago. I don’t even listen to BBC radio s as by more ( I know you don’t need a TV licence for that, but I justified paying for the TV licence on the grounds that I was enjoying their radio output). I told them I wasn’t renewing, but the moment you are off their system they start sending threatening letters. Just ignore them.

Chiseltip · 14/11/2025 15:13

Screwyousimon · 14/11/2025 12:09

They are bullies. I filled in the declaration and still has a person from capita knock my door. Few weeks later more letters. Now I just throw them in the recycling bin.

Never fill out any declaration. Why on earth would you?

Do you declare to Apple that you don't use their phones?

Just cancel your licence payments. Then ignore any correspondence. If you have a Ring Door Bell they will avoid your house like you have the plague. They hate being recorded

Hang on. You’re paying for a service you don’t use just ‘because’? A TV Licence is a licence to watch TV through the airwaves. You don’t do that. But you pay…cool I guess that cancels my not paying out anyway!

I do indeed pay for a service I use. BBC Radion which i listen to for prob 14 hours a day and that's just me.

Just because it is not mandatory doesn't mean it is right.

NippyNinjaCrab · 14/11/2025 15:28

I had an email telling me that I had logged into my BBC account on several occasions and that I needed a licence.

I didn't renew mine this year. I simply don't watch live TV anymore. The BBC sent me a really shitty letter saying that I was now 'under investigation'. Investigate all you want, I simply don't watch live TV anymore. I pay for Netflix and Amazon.

Same as us

Online is saying I have to ring them to cancel mine? Apparently I can get a refund? (I only re paid mine in September)

I think I need to cancel the automatic renewal.

We still pay it but I never watch the dramas as they are too fake and go on for ages. I used to be a fan of Eastenders, but stopped watching about 15 years ago, but I loved it when it first began. Casualty is always there on a Saturday and I have never watched it. They seem to have a guaranteed amount of money to do as they like.

ninjahamster · 14/11/2025 15:41

I’m clearly old fashioned! We do have a license. We watch live tv every day, news, the odd soap, dramas…

Don’t have Netflix etc.

smallglassbottle · 14/11/2025 15:42

We don't have a television or watch anything live online. The licence people email me an online form to fill in and submit to say I don't need one. I noticed this time there's a few trick questions in there designed to catch people out.

OonaStubbs · 14/11/2025 15:45

The BBC is an anachronism in itself and the TV licence even more so. There are a myriad of content providers nowadays, the BBC should be treated no differently to Netflix, Prime, Crunchyroll et al. Available via subscription and you can subscribe and cancel when you want.

Ciribiner · 14/11/2025 15:47

RealChristmasBaby · 14/11/2025 11:45

I looked into this recently but even if you record any programmes on a box eg Sky biox you still have to have a licence. It's so annoying. I have to pay because we do watch the news and some sport live. Not on BBC though so it niggles I pay for Sky and still have to pay a licence fee.
However, if you don't do any of that you don't have to buy a licence and you will be fine.
I do wonder how they can prove if you watch any live tv?

They can't unless you admit you do.

DaisyChain505 · 14/11/2025 15:47

Haven’t paid it in years.

Olive567 · 14/11/2025 15:52

Swiftie1878 · 14/11/2025 13:09

24 hour rolling news, I’d agree with you.
Shows like Question Time, Newsnight, Laura Kuenssberg on Sunday etc, though, add a lot to my news diet!

Since i've moved home i've not bothered with a TV licence as don't have TV or use player etc. I do listen to a lot of radio however. You can access many BBC TV programs such as Kuenssberg on Sunday on BBC News radio station on BBC Sounds app.

Namenamchange · 14/11/2025 15:58

I don’t understand if I need a tv licence or not, don't watch bbc, but do watch live tv such as sky Atlantic, or similar, and often record it for later… do I need a tv licence?

Yes, to be legally licence free you’d need to watch no live tv, be that watching it live or recording it live (and no bbc)
