Tv licence ?

AlwaysHopefull89 · 14/11/2025 11:34

Does anyone still pay their tv licence? If NOT, why not?

we don’t watch bbc at all, stream any live tv or even watch live tv to be honest.

our bill was £180 and I can’t justify paying that anymore if we aren’t using the services? I’m worried if I don’t pay next year when it’s due I’ll get a knock at our door 😂😂

AIBU to cancel ours?

Do you mean because you watched it?

Sunfloweranddaisy · 14/11/2025 13:20

I cancelled my tv licence in 2020. We don’t watch any live tv or anything on bbc catch up.

We use Netflix, prime etc. We also have music subscription that we pay for so don’t listen to radio either. We don’t intend to have one ever again.

Parents/siblings also cancelled theirs years ago as they too only use subscriptions.

Of course! Best telly since last Christmas’s Gavin and Stacey 😁

Nope never seen it couldn’t even tell you what it’s suppose to be about as haven’t read anything on it either. To be honest though I was never into any kind of ‘celebrity’ programme even when I did have a licence years ago.

Redshoeblueshoe · 14/11/2025 13:24

They are losing so many LF payers that I think the government will abolish it next year, then put up taxes to pay for it.

CatHairEveryWhereNow · 14/11/2025 13:24

I don’t watch any live tv, all my viewing is on Netflix, Prime Video and Disney +.

We currently pay - have sky as well and do record to box occaonally.

Keep saying to DH we should seriously think cancel both and go to firestick and apps we already have - we're watching so little actual TV. He keeps putting it off though.

I wouldn’t be surprised but it’d cause a backlash.

BunnyLake · 14/11/2025 13:30

I stopped about four year’s ago. I realised the only thing I was watching was Strictly and I was getting bored with that and I stopped watching Corrie about 15 year’s ago. I had Youtube and Netflix and found far more interesting stuff on those. I stopped my licence, stopped watching mainstream tv and told them, and they’ve pestered me on and off ever since, including even coming round once. I won’t give them a penny of my money ever again.

Megifer · 14/11/2025 13:30

Not had one for years. Still watch TV. Cancelled mine just because I didnt want to pay it anymore.

laterbriefing · 14/11/2025 13:32

Cancelled mine several years ago. I pay for the basic Sky package (for WIFI/phone/TV etc) but I never watch BBC or live TV. I watch everything on catch up or through Netflix or Discovery (which comes free with Sky).

As long as you fill the form in each year (or whenever they ask), it’s unlikely you’d get a visit. And even if you do, you don’t need to let them in. Just explain you don’t watch bbc or live TV and that should be the end of that.

no , I don't watch any bbc whatsoever unless it's a programme that's been sold to another channel I do pay monthly sub for

Will never be put on taxes. Imagine a government forcing you to pay a tax to fund a tv station, it's not north Korea and would finish off any government.
Bbc will have ti find ways to self fund or close up shop, like any other broadcaster

randomchap · 14/11/2025 13:35

Worth it for Have I Got News For You, Radio 4, and the website.

AlwaysHopefull89 · 14/11/2025 12:04

Yeah just trying to find out the requirements to pay so confusing. Maybe they’ve deliberately made it like that!

It's very deliberate.

Some people on here don't seem to know the rules. It's done so that you can be tripped up if you get a visit, as that's the only way to fine you.

The only sensible thing to do is not pay and not speak to them if you get a visit, which is extremely rare

elviswhorley · 14/11/2025 13:42

well if you don't have to pay of course you don't pay. you'll need to inform them you don't need one though as they have your name. they've never had my name. no one's ever come to the house. in north korea, the propaganda is free of charge.

Best advice. Don't ever engage with capital sales people, bin all letters and ignore emails.

Totally bs. You don't need to inform them at all. Cancelling dd and ignoring them works. By filling out forms you're giving the clowns your information. After a year of ignoring them, their mail is then addressed to present occupier

SL2924 · 14/11/2025 13:47

I have no issue paying the license fee. I think it’s really important to preserve a public broadcaster and it would be a real shame to lose the BBC. It’s an institution and a major part of British modern history.

It’s not perfect but I trust the news site far more than any other which is important to me given how horribly toxic our media is. Also I watch stuff like strictly, planet earth, traitors. They seem to make better use of my license fee than the government makes with my taxes.

Okay well I have no idea as like I say, they have never been given my name so neve written to me nor come over.

These people are already paying so they already have their information and as such can take them to court, which I would suggest they avoid via informing them that they don't need one and allowing them to do their checks.

Just cancelling surely they'd send a summons? But hey ho, either way bit a weird question 'shall I pay for this thing I'm under no obligation to pay for?'

They can't send a summons as you don't legally have to have a license. All they can do is send letters or emails, letters in the bin and emails deleted. Then they have the option to send goons round, which you shut the door on.
Its not down to you to prove you don't need a licence, it's up to capita to prove you do? Pretty hard to do from outside. They're not allowed to collate evidence through windows either.
They're trick is bullying their way in with lies and tricking people into signing things.
Of course you'll get people that cheat and still watch bbc, often caught out with genuine details on i player etc
I don't watch the bbc, or live tv, therefore dint need a licence and no requirement to engage with tvl or capita
Its like sending the milkman an email every year saying you don't want milk delivered.

Well these people do need to legally pay the TV Licence unless they get registered otherwise. Currently they are registered as legally obligated to pay.

Specialfatfurrycat · 14/11/2025 14:21

I cancelled mine because when I moved house I immediately got aggressive and misleading letters from Capita and it put my back up so much I decided to just not pay anymore.

They cannot enter your house. They cannot prove what you watch. Even if you used IPlayer on your own email you could be watching it at a house which had a licence and would therefore not need a licence. I can’t bear their bullying tactics. I’ve ignored the letters for over 2yrs now

GinaandGin · 14/11/2025 14:21

I don't pay
I filled in the form online
They try to intimidate you and say that they might send someone out to your house to check
They have NO RIGHT to entry property without a bench warrant from a magistrate
