AIBU to be utterly fed up with everyone saying they’re “obsessed” with absolutely everything?

Is it just me? Every time I go on social media someone is “obsessed” with their new mug, a mascara, a sandwich, a cardigan, their own dog (fair enough), or a completely average TV show. It feels like the word has lost all meaning.

I know it’s harmless but it sets my teeth on edge. You cannot actually be obsessed with a £4 candle from Tesco, Karen.

AIBU to find this overuse of “obsessed” really grating, or do I just need to mute half the internet and move on?

It’s so tedious isn’t it? Somebody started a thread on here this week to say they don’t understand the ‘obsession’ with Toby Carvery (in a snotty they’re all chavs that go there way). I don’t know anyone obsessed with a carvery it is an overused word said for drama.

NewInks · 13/11/2025 15:57

Who’s Karen?

ColinOfficeTrolley · 13/11/2025 15:57

I agree, but please do try not to use the term 'Karen', to be derogatory towards women. It's tiresome.

JudgeBread · 13/11/2025 15:59

Ah you had me until you used Karen as an insult, I thought we'd all grown out of that "shut up woman" thing now?

I couldn’t agree more.

HelpMeGetThrough · 13/11/2025 16:08

Perhaps I’m odd, but I can’t understand people being obsessed with anything, don’t they get bored with it?

I’ve never been obsessed with anything in my adult life.

Nitgel · 13/11/2025 16:11

Im obsessed in an ocd way with checking the boiler. Being obsessed with autumn leaves would be preferable.

JustTakeTheCakeJake · 13/11/2025 16:11

But Molly Maes "current obsession" is comfort/ fairy/ arial/ persil.😂

Hoardasurass · 13/11/2025 16:13

The only thing worse is people using the misogynistic term Karen @MistyGray

Catpiece · 13/11/2025 16:16

I remember some twat at work saying how her MIL was “obsessed with Eeyore”. I thought a grown woman having that sort of tacky shit everywhere? No thanks

DinoLil · 13/11/2025 16:18

Tbf my dog is obsessed with the ankle deep layer of crunchy leaves outside the caravan I'm staying in. She cries to go out, flings herself around, comes back in. Repeat 10 minutes later...

BetteDavisChin · 13/11/2025 16:23

Another one who doesn't like the derogatory "Karen". I was enjoying your post up to that point.

Me neither, I think the enthusiasm runs out in adulthood.

Disturbia81 · 13/11/2025 16:26

Yeah you lost me with the Karen too..

MiffyPurple · 13/11/2025 16:39

When people use 'Karen' as an insult, I stop listening. Grow up already.

Redpeach · 13/11/2025 16:42

Maybe you're a little too obsessed with sicial media? Just stay off it
