For turning the heating on

WorriedDogMum87 · 13/11/2025 11:07

I’m sitting here in a 100% wool jumper, a long 100% wool dress, and sheepskin boots with real wool inside and I am STILL cold.

maybe I’d feel better still if I wore gloves, a hat, and a scarf but why would I have to do that inside my own house? I’m not in Antarctica.

So I’ve turned the heating on. So sue me.

Good for you. Mines been on a timer.. 3 times a day/ evening scince end of September. Can't stand being cold.
My illness makes it worse.
Im wearing a lounge suit.. fluffy socks and slippers. Sometimes l wear my fingerless gloves.

Melsy88 · 13/11/2025 11:15

Why would anyone sue you? Or even care whether you have put your heating on or not?!

WonderlandWasAllAHoax · 13/11/2025 11:19

Why would anyone care that you have the heating on in November?

MumChp · 13/11/2025 11:25

Good for you...

Noorandapples · 13/11/2025 11:32

The obsession with being a martyr with the heating off is so british. My mum would sit in a freezing house with hat, scarf, fingerless gloves, coat, boots. But could afford 2 cars. Just turn the heating on.

LadyKenya · 13/11/2025 11:37

You have to pay the heating bills, as you know, so what is the issue?

FrangipaniBlue · 13/11/2025 11:38

Eh?

Katherineryan1986 · 13/11/2025 11:49

I don’t know why people have an issue with putting the heating on if they can afford the bills! Our heating is on 24/7 365 days a year. It’s set to 21 deg and just comes on and off as the thermostat sees fit. I have been told that this method is the most economical way to run it but I haven’t done the maths myself. I can see that if you let your house get cold and then the boiler has to work hard to get it up to temperature this would probably use more energy than if the house was at a constant temperature and the boiler is just coming on to top up.

I didn’t know that. I turn it on year round several times most days but I’m in Scotland

I live in Scotland so I pretty much haven't ever turned the heat off.

Today its 6C, feels like -1C

TheNightingalesStarling · 13/11/2025 12:08

If you need it on, turn it on.

Everyone feels cold differently, different houses feel different at the same temperature... no one can you are unreasonable

Seawolves · 13/11/2025 12:09

Mine is always on too, the radiators come on if the room temp drops below 22.5° in the living room and 19° in all other rooms. I have no idea if the rads have fired up today or not.

This, just get it on, there's no competition!

Newdoggo · 13/11/2025 12:15

Same - thermostat set and leave it to it, don't ever switch heating on or off, if I feel too warm I'll turn it down then put it back up if I need to, no timers or anything like that.

No one on MN puts their heating on until it’s at least -2.

Freewifix · 13/11/2025 12:53

Iive not used my heating since last year.
I think it's warm to day.

Komic · 13/11/2025 12:56

Mine has clicked on several times since sept, it’s on today, it’s hailing outside and I can’t stand being cold.

Goodness me. It was 15 degrees when I took the dogs out for a wee at 3am this morning in the south!

It depends on the house. If super modern and super insulated, that might be the most efficient. But generally it isn't efficient to heat the house when you are in bed or out for the day.

Also in the South. It's 16 today outside so presumably 18+ without heating inside. I think I'd boil with the heating on. It feels weird though, some years we've had it on in September!

itsthetea · 13/11/2025 13:11

What’s the problem with turning the heating on?

yes if you are poor or have a very poorly insulated home it’s expensive but if you can afford it , it’s better for your health

And it’s 7 outside here today

Kitchendilemas · 13/11/2025 13:12

It’s lovely and sunny in London. Sitting in the garden having lunch.

my heating costs approx £6-8 per hour, so won’t be putting it on until I am cold

Coconutter24 · 13/11/2025 13:28

It’s November, you say you’re in Scotland, it’s your house and your bill…. I’m not quite sure why you think anyone would sue you or think anything of you having the heating on! 😂

toffeeapplebutter · 13/11/2025 13:32

Not everyone lives in the balmy south…
