For turning the heating on

I’m sitting here in a 100% wool jumper, a long 100% wool dress, and sheepskin boots with real wool inside and I am STILL cold.

maybe I’d feel better still if I wore gloves, a hat, and a scarf but why would I have to do that inside my own house? I’m not in Antarctica.

So I’ve turned the heating on. So sue me.

It’s lovely and sunny in London. Sitting in the garden having lunch.

my heating costs approx £6-8 per hour, so won’t be putting it on until I am cold

The rain is due now.

Iive not used my heating since last year.
I think it's warm to day.

It’s a mild november but many houses are very damp and chilly despite this. In these conditions my house humidity is high so we have the heating on as needed as i don’t want mould everywhere either.

Sidebeforeself · 13/11/2025 14:40

Someone will come on in a minute saying they are still in shorts and flip flops!

My DH is.

But, he's like that all year round. I'm in joggers and a hoody.

Blondeshavemorefun · 13/11/2025 14:48

It’s Nov. Why wouldn’t you have it on.

there was a good wet day in August. I turned my heating on

Specialcrumpets · 13/11/2025 14:48

No one on MN puts their heating on until it’s at least -2.

Not if this thread is anything to go by.

guys, I’m going to go and put the kettle on. Take that you fuckers! Sue me

elviswhorley · 13/11/2025 15:05

I'd rather get in a bit of debt and pay that off later than sit in my own home, which I pay for, and be cold. Just not happening.

Unfortunately the debt can get quite huge but no, being warm is not just for those with tonnes of surplus cash.

I don’t know why people have an issue with putting the heating on if they can afford the bills! Our heating is on 24/7 365 days a year. It’s set to 21 deg and just comes on and off as the thermostat sees fit. I have been told that this method is the most economical way to run it but I haven’t done the maths myself. I can see that if you let your house get cold and then the boiler has to work hard to get it up to temperature this would probably use more energy than if the house was at a constant temperature and the boiler is just coming on to top up.

Leaving the heating on leads to greater heat loss and means higher cost.

DuchessofStaffordshire · 13/11/2025 15:26

Well I've just got the fire going. It has been getting chilly by late afternoon where I am this week and I live in an old cottage so it does feel a bit damp and chilly. I so have adequate clothing on too, unlike my kids who will lounge around in shorts and t shirts complaining that it's cold.

I understand that.
But i have a fan going and windows open welcome to early menopause lol.

The obsession with being a martyr with the heating off is so british. My mum would sit in a freezing house with hat, scarf, fingerless gloves, coat, boots. But could afford 2 cars. Just turn the heating on.

This is true. Excluding poverty why are we so martyrish about it?

Other countries aren’t like this. Their homes are warm and toasty (and not damp ridden). I don’t want to sit in a coat and gloves in my own home.

I put a jumper on. If I’m still cold then I the heating on…that could be August for all I care. Hate all this ‘must hold out until November business’.

Everanewbie · 13/11/2025 15:56

If you're cold OP, put it on.

I do think in general that people have a psychological thing going on where they automatically want the heating on because its November, or raining, or dark etc. despite much of the country being actually closer to May (16 degrees yesterday!) at the moment in terms of temperature, especially at night. But OP, you said you're in Scotland with lower temperatures. Likewise, you have those martyrs who would rather shiver than get the thermostat above 15 degrees.

MyAmusedPearlSquid · 13/11/2025 16:40

Don't think it matters to anyone if you use the heating or not tbh 🤷 you pay for it you decide it's bizzare why a thread needs to be started over heating lol

Cynic17 · 13/11/2025 16:42

It's November..... of course you turn the heating on! What's the point of having it installed if you don't use it when you feel cold?

Fedupofwimps · 13/11/2025 16:47

We've had the fire lit almost constantly since the beginning of October! Luckily it's position means it does tend to heat the whole house so we are lovely and toasty.
I used to live in a freezing house and that was the main reason we moved, being cold all winter is sodding miserable and I try to avoid it at all costs!

PuppyMonkey · 13/11/2025 16:59

There’s a cold front coming through from this evening apparently so we’ll all be having the heating on by tomorrow. I’ve had mine on boost for an hour or two/in the morning for several weeks now. Will soon be having to do it on a more regular schedule I’m sure. Snow next week so they say. ⛄️

Lostuser · 13/11/2025 19:16

My home is warm, it’s not particularly old (less than 15 years I’d say) I’ll probably only put the heating on a handful of times over the winter. I hate that suffocating heating feeling.

Prokovopera · 13/11/2025 19:30

My house is Tudor so you’d expect it to be cold but it’s actually really warm -
it just retains heat very well for some inexplicable reason. I’m in Suffolk and it’s been really mild so we haven’t needed to turn the heating on at all (yet!)

Blondeshavemorefun · 13/11/2025 20:49

I am amazed how many struggle to pay for the heating I guess on one hand heating is expensive specially in winter but don’t most people not pay the same all year round

so I pay £150 a month which means I can have my heating on whenever I want in winter

Obviously my summer bills are maybe 30 £40 was just electricity but that’s when the amount built up so I’m in credit for £500 by September October time that means if I have three cold very cold months I can use my heating as much as I want

I just assumed everyone would do that to pay the whole year round the same amount but one of my friends literally pays her bill

so in April May June July aug her bills are nothing but then they start to creep up and come September October November December January it’s cold and sometimes her heating bills can be 300 up to 400 a month and moans about it every winter

But she’s quite happy to have four or five months or very low payment and I always say to her, why don’t you budget and use the same monthly payment all year round so you do build up credit and she always says no

i get some are literally living on the bare bones of their arses so can’t pay same monthly but sure most can

user1476613140 · 13/11/2025 20:50

Had mine on for months. Live in Scotland!

Elsvieta · 13/11/2025 21:24

Your life, your property, your bills. (I can't imagine NOT needing heating in mid-November). I understand that some people struggle with the cost of it, but for everyone else this thing of acting like there's some sort of virtue in suffering is bonkers. Like being proud of not eating enough or not going to the doctor when you're ill.

Bikergran · 14/11/2025 19:56

Primark oodie. Amazing.

JingleBongle · 14/11/2025 20:14

Melsy88 · 13/11/2025 11:15

Why would anyone sue you? Or even care whether you have put your heating on or not?!

Exactly! How embarrassing op. You are a grown big woman aren’t you?

henlake7 · 14/11/2025 20:21

Bikergran · 14/11/2025 19:56

Primark oodie. Amazing.

Wearing mine right now!😀

I think if you are contemplating wearing gloves or a hat indoors then it's Def time to put the heating on.
I'm in the SE so I think I still have a few days before I have to worry about it.

SheinIsShite · 14/11/2025 20:23

This idea that you get a gold star for not using heating is just so weird. There is no kudos in being cold.
