Going to the theatre by myself

Can I go to the theatre by myself?

there is a show that I really want to see which has mostly sold out. The only few seats available are single seats so I’d have to go by myself.

Will I look weird/be judged?

Im quite happy to eat in a restaurant by myself when away from home, and I think I’d be ok with going to the cinema by myself. But the theatre feels different somehow.

No I used to do it loads and there are always other people alone too. I loved it.

Libellousness · 13/11/2025 21:07

I find it somewhat strange that you’re comfortable eating in a restaurant by yourself but think going to the theatre alone is beyond the pale. I would have thought anyone would feel far more exposed to negative attention and pity doing the former.

I go to the theatre a lot on my own. Its nice being able to decide last minute to see something and then just booking a single seat. I book last minute too and production seats often get released on the day so you get a really good seat at a cheaper price.

I do go with friends too but actually love the flexibility and freedom of going alone and not having to exchange endless texts to pick a date etc etc

Absolutely nobody gives a shit if you go on your own.

BellaTrixLeStrange1 · 13/11/2025 21:21

I regularly go to the theatre by myself and I LOVE it! I get a front row seat for the Saturday matinee when DH and kids are at football. Nice glass of wine and some chocs in the interval. Peace and quiet, nobody asking me for stuff! What’s not to love about that?!!

Andromed1 · 13/11/2025 21:46

I do it, no problems of any kind.

QuietLifeNoDrama · 13/11/2025 21:49

I do it and don’t worry at all. Nobody gives two hoots who’s say next to them I’m the theatre

Went to Moulin Rouge on my own in September and it was fantastic! Felt a bit of a lemon at the interval, but not for long because I got a drink at the bar and my seat neighbours were chatting to me anyway. Have fun if you go. Which show is it?

PoppySaidYesIKnow · 13/11/2025 22:51

I’ve started going on my own if I know it’s something nobody else I know would want to see. I like it, you can really get into it as you aren’t distracted by whoever is with you, that said, people nattering all the way through seems to be a thing now so that pisses me right off!

Sorry voted wrongly. You are being unreasonable! You’ll be grand!

PurpleFlower1983 · 13/11/2025 22:56

I’ve been loads of my own, it’s fine!

EconomyClassRockstar · 13/11/2025 22:56

I literally just booked a ticket to go see Two Strangers next Wednesday. I'm having a nice lunch beforehand too. I love having a day to myself.

Otterdrunk · 14/11/2025 03:46

Yes of course! It can feel a bit less conspicuous if it’s a daytime performance but it’s completely fine in the pm as well. You will notice others in same boat. It’s actually empowering breaking free from the weight of societal expectation.

I would 100% go to the theatre alone if I felt like it. I have also enjoyed eating out and the movies alone! The last movie I saw out was Babygirl. I had a day off from work and went to the cinema in the middle of the day. It was just a handful of women all sitting by themselves and obviously no one talked the whole movie. It was fantastic 🍿

Tallya · 14/11/2025 05:34

Of course you can, go and enjoy yourself! Who cares what other people think.

sillyrubberduck · 14/11/2025 06:29
