Hate showering & washing my hair-Do you shower every day?

Don’t know why I hate i?! Does anyone else?

I shower on working days (3 x per week) and if meeting up with friends etc, but if i’m off for a while, I don’t, is that gross? I could easily go a week if only doing school drop off and food shop, dog walks

Shower most days, but often skip a day at weekends if just slobbing. Wash hair about every 3 days.

TidyCyan · 12/11/2025 17:36

I wash my hair twice to three times a week (it's curly so I use a decent dry shampoo in-between, no styling needed) but I shower or bath every day (twice if I go for a run).

It takes longer to strip wash and water gets all over the floor - much quicker to do a 90 second shower with a cap on.

isitmytime · 12/11/2025 17:37

I shower daily it’s just my routine and feel sweaty/smelly if I don’t. It’s the first thing I do when I get up. I only wash my hair every 2/3 days so on non wash days I wear a shower cap I can be in and out the shower in just over 5mins.
an everything shower maybe takes 15mins. I know it’s personal preference but I just don’t feel properly clean from a wash and it takes me far longer than a quick shower

Quamarina · 12/11/2025 17:37

I used to shower once or twice a day, washing hair daily but I’ve moved to baths every other day & washing my hair every 3rd day over the bath. I had a HORRIFIC surge of all over body eczema which I could only control with bathing less. I had eczema as a child too but nothing like this time round. I do have a big wash every day & wash face twice a day.

As a consequence of reduced showering I noticed my hair was looking LESS greasy, it used to be the sort of hair that was washed at 6am & lank by lunchtime, and to my absolute amazement it’s much less broken & split, longer than I’ve been able to grow it since my 20s. I’ve been asked (accused)? of having hair extensions, it’s gone from scruffy rat tail shoulder grazing to just above my waist & looks a lot fuller.

I’ve recently been able to introduce scented body creams again though, which for me is a green light to start showering daily. If my skin can handle the champneys range without hives it can probably cope with daily dose of water. But I won’t be washing my hair daily again.

I shower every single day even if I’m ill or am staying home alone. I can’t imagine ever doing differently, like others have said I like feeling fresh. Unwashed people have a smell - sorry but it’s true. Nothing you can cover up with perfume, it’s unmistakably ‘stale’.

People don’t smell after one day without a shower, unless their clothes are dirty. That’s categorically untrue.

BrendaSmall · 12/11/2025 17:42

I used to hate having a shower, so I used to bath every day.
we went away around 5/6 years ago for 2 weeks and I had a shower everyday as no option for a bath, since then I’ve been having a shower at home, every day. There’s nothing better than having a shower and getting into bed!
if I’m washing my hair I’ll have a shower earlier than bedtime as I don’t like going to bed with wet hair!
in the warmer months I’ll have a shower straight after work and then have another one before bed.

People do smell, even if they shower and wear deodorant.
Some foods are smelly and it comes through the pores.

I can relate OP, I'm pretty sure I'm ND (although never been formally diagnosed) and I absolutely detest the sensation of going from dry to wet skin. Hate it so much. Once I've actually got myself wet all over I feel OK and normally enjoy it (more if I'm having a bath than a shower, tbh) and I love feeling fresh and clean post-bath or shower, but that initial sensation of getting wet... ugh ugh. (I'm screwing up my face right now just thinking of it.)

I do have some form of wash every day and it's usually a bath or shower but there aren't many mornings when I just feel able to immediately get on with it and face the sensory ick, I usually have to have been awake and up for a bit before I can tackle the bath or shower.

It's worst when showering and I have no idea how people can go straight from bed to shower in the morning (well, obviously because they don't have this sensory issue, but I can't imagine what that's like), I always need time to work up to the feeling of the water hitting my skin. If I had more time in the mornings I'd have a daily short bath as I find the transition from dry to wet skin easier when I have a bath. On days when I'm feeling unwell or extremely tired (I'm often sleep-deprived due to a sleep disorder) I sometimes just have a stand-up wash but never really feel as clean.

Nannyfannybanny · 12/11/2025 17:44

Growing up in the 50s, weekly bath and hair wash. In the 70s lived in Victorian London flat, there wasn't a bathroom at all. Then I had daily baths, bubbles, yup. Developed genital and vulva eczema,it used to bleed. Baths were banned by dermatologist, then gradually all the products I used. Now,it's Epaderm, on those areas daily,2/3 very quick showers a week. I've had skin cancer removed twice, you can't shower for several weeks. I've also had several abdominal surgeries where you can't shower for several days. My DH or kids would tell me if I smelt. Weirdly he actually doesn't smell or sweat,it's a standing joke,he could wear socks for a year.

There are definitely days when I don't feel like it, and there are occasionally days when I haven't exercised and I'm not going anywhere that I give it a miss. But then I'll feel like I really need one early the next day,

There's a difference between showering and washing your hair though. I wash my hair every day when I shower otherwise it gets really greasy. The only exception is if I take a second shower in a day, for example if I've exercised later in the day and I'll have a quick shower after that. I appreciate that not everyone needs to wash their hair as often, A non-hair washing shower literally takes less than five minutes from getting undressed to being dressed again. There's really no excuse not to do that pretty much every day.

'Excuse'? People don't have to excuse their hygiene habits to others. And I'm guessing that might make you think 'They do if they smell', but whether you accept it or not, it is possible to not shower/bathe every day and not smell. I'm guessing you weren't around in the 70s when a lot of people had strip washes lots of days and baths/showers less often? I was, and I don't remember many people being smelly at all.

ThatAlertLilacFinch · 12/11/2025 17:47

I shower and wash my hair probably 6 days out of 7, just because it does make me feel better and my hair gets soo greasy. But I’m another one that struggles with the sensory aspect - I really procrastinate getting in and then out of the shower!!

Cucy · 12/11/2025 17:49

Its absolutely fine.

If are smelling after only a couple of days without vigorous exercising, then you’re abnormal.

The majority do not smell after a couple of days.

A good test would be to wear the exact same clothes for a couple of days and then shower and change and then smell the clothes.

If your armpits or underwear are smelling then you may not be showering enough or may need to wash in those areas more but it’s likely that they won’t smell and you’ll be fine.

People can typically go for a week without smelling.
It’s often our clothes that trap odours and make us smell bad, especially if not wearing efficient deodorant.

I often struggle to get in the shower (ND) but it’s good for my MH and I do it to make me feel better rather than because I’m smelling.

UnimatrixZeroOne · 12/11/2025 17:51

"I don't stink either"
I bet your vulva and vagina and bum do. How bloody revolting to not wash those every day.

YYYDlilah · 12/11/2025 17:52

The majority do not smell after a couple of days.
People smell even if clean. People smell differently. They don't smell stinky, they just smell.

I swim every morning and shower and wash my hair afterwards. I have short hair to facilitate this. I love having showers and would hate to not be able to shower or bath every day.

I always find it surprising that some people choose to only wash their hair once a week, even if you have a dry scalp and hair and don't want to use shampoo that often surely you still need a co-wash to remove dirt and sweat? I think if you've got long hair and can't be bothered because of the time it takes you might be better off with shorter hair.

But that's not why all of us do it. Since menopause my hair genuinely only needs washing roughly every 4 days. It just isn't dirty or greasy before then, it's a lot dryer than it used to be, and washing it more often dries it out and makes it frizzy. It doesn't really feel like there is dirt and sweat to be removed tbh, I guess this might be different if I exercised a lot/went into dirty environments a lot, but I don't.

When I was a teen I had greasy hair and it did need washing daily, but these things change with hormonal changes, that's just one reason.

adviceneeded1990 · 12/11/2025 17:55

Daily shower in the morning and a bath on a Sunday night that is my me time for self care. Love feeling clean and fresh. Loathe drying my hair though and often plait it back wet for work.

evilharpy · 12/11/2025 17:56

Shower every day, wash hair every other day unless it's very sweaty from exercise or I'm going somewhere and want it to look nice (super greasy hair but also bleach highlights and needs straightening every time it's washed so try not to dry it out). Extra 2 min shower if I have been to the gym. I could easily go two or three days without being smelly if I haven't been to the gym as I sweat very little (no, I am not the former prince Andrew), but like feeling clean.

My friend struggles to make herself shower. She has ADHD and fibro and some days she just hasn't got the spoons for it.

QuizzlyBears · 12/11/2025 17:56

I shower every evening and morning, wash my hair every other morning for the most part, sometimes daily depending on what I’m doing. I’d hate not starting or finishing my day clean!

Happyjoe · 12/11/2025 17:58

Every morning, can't stand feeling dirty, been like it for years, since about 10 years old? I occasionally have such a busy day can't find the time to and I can't stand how it feels 20hrs later. I also love my bubbles, lotion and potions etc.

I also have fine, curly hair that looks utterly terrible after a night's kip, so have to wash.

BeardofHagrid · 12/11/2025 17:58

I live in poverty in not very nice conditions. I bathe once a week which is what i can afford. I wash my hair every two days in the sink. Those able to shower daily are very lucky ❤️

IMustDoMoreExercise · 12/11/2025 18:00

Why do you wash your hair every day?

You only need to do it once a week.

I love showering every morning.

Cakencookieobsessed · 12/11/2025 18:03

Dontfeelchristmassyyet · 12/11/2025 16:25

I don’t get anxious though, i’m just relaxed at home and quite happy, I don’t smell, would have been told if I did

I take it you go to the toilet? How can you be relaxed and happy with a dirty arse? Toilet roll is no substitute for soap and water.

calmag · 12/11/2025 18:05

I shower my body daily but I only wash my hair 3 times a week as it is very thick, long and tends to dryness. I enjoy a bath in winter when I have the time.

AppropriateAdult · 12/11/2025 17:38

I stink if I don't have a shower every day, same as everyone else, whether they admit it, or not!

Namechangefordaughterevasion · 12/11/2025 18:08

I used to shower every day but now quite often skip a day. I couldn't go a week though - I'd feel and smell awful.

OTOH I seldom wash my hair more than once a week. It's very thick and drying it takes forever. I refresh it with dry shampoo if needed and occasionally will clip back the length and wash/blow dry the fringe only. This regime has the benefit of reducing colour fade and means I use heated tools less often.
