Hate showering & washing my hair-Do you shower every day?

Don’t know why I hate i?! Does anyone else?

I shower on working days (3 x per week) and if meeting up with friends etc, but if i’m off for a while, I don’t, is that gross? I could easily go a week if only doing school drop off and food shop, dog walks

I only shower when I need to wash my hair - so couple of times a week. Can't be bothered, don't like being cold, and don't want to wet my hair (very fine so needs long blow dry to look decent), and also lucky in that I have low BO. I can wear socks for a week and they are fine (though I generally don't!).
In summer or if I've had a big exercise session I might wash my pits at the sink, or in summer I would have a very quick shower after a run, but not always

Every other day is generally fine in cold weather

But people don't realise that even if you don’t outwardly stink, your bum and privates will. They just will… with the various fluids passing through daily.

My biggest thing though is people not using soap.

Most dermatologists don’t recommend old fashioned soap but prefer cleansers with moisturising ingredients, e,g body wash, shower creams/oils. At a push, Dove sensitive cleansing bar.

It's not laziness at all. I always had greasy skin from an early age, periods at 11, did what I thought was necessary. 5 years ago, dry skin vulval eczema, laying in a saline bath in the middle of the night crying with the pain. Bleeding, unable to walk or even wear cotton pants. Sitting on the sofa naked from the waist down covered with a throw. A year wait to see a consultant, then I was send incorrectly to gynae..I took out my old ISA and went private, guess what, the dermatologist said we shower/bath/wash too much. Destroy the skins mantle, biome, and the beneficial bacteria.

Absolutely agree with this. Washing everything every day probably isnt good for those with eczema. I've got pompolyx eczema and overwashing aggravates it horribly - the itchy blisters are horrid.

So sorry to hear you suffered so much with your eczema, that sounded so painful. Glad you are OK now ❤️

Speak for your own ‘privates’ madam

This made me chuckle 😅

I know that if this was me, I would be concerned about my mental health.

How incredibly rude of you, and rather stupid too. If you would worry about your mental health in that instance, I think possibly you should be worrying about it now.

I'm sorry but people who couldn't be bothered to shower everyday are just being lazy. It doesn't take very long to do it's the same as brushing your teeth . Do you also neglect your teeth

Either I'm showering wrong, or this isn't true.

To shower I need to- turn the shower on, fetch a towel, wait for the water to heat up, get undressed, wash my body with soap, rinse off, wash my body with shower gel, rinse off, shampoo my hair and rinse x 2, put on conditioner, shave legs, rinse off conditioner, dry myself, blow dry hair.

To brush my teeth I need to- put toothpaste on brush, brush teeth, spit and rinse.

You wash your body twice, once with soap and again with shower gel? Why?

YYYDlilah · 14/11/2025 13:29

@throwaway20262025 , while I agree that brushing teeth is far quicker, your shower routine does seem overly complicated.

Mine is gather clean clothes, make sure a dry towel will be within reach when I need it. Floss and brush teeth. Undress. Step in shower and switch it on.
Rinse myself all over. The first bit of water tends to be tepid but it soon warms up.
Shampoo hair, soap all the smelly bits.
Rinse off. Conditioner on, shower gel over all but the smelly bits.
Rinse off.
Dry, get dressed. Comb hair.

I agree with you there. I use proper soap to wash under my armpits and my feet at the sink but I use a gentler shower gel to wash my arms, legs and body or I get dry skin/excema.

I actually think I am cleaner on a strip wash day than I am on a shower day. Water washing over your body from above doesn't get you as cleam as a targeted scrub.

And no soap or other product is going anywhere near my vagina or vulva. I don't want an infection thank you very much!

Because soap gets rid of the germs, especially pits and under boobs, I use Dettol which is best as it's antibac but it smells a bit medical. Then I use my nice smelling coconut shower gel, which smells nice but isn't sufficient to actually clean.

Kreepture · 14/11/2025 13:35

I loathe it.

I will preface this by saying i'm physically disabled. - showering is a physically taxing activity that leaves me light headed, feeling sick, in pain and needing to recover. I'm dealing with a shower/bath that i have to climb in/out of and makes me a fall risk, so I'm waiting on a new adapted bathroom to be completed that will hopefully make it easier for me.

I do not exercise outside my physiotherapy.. see above.

I wash my hair every other day, and wash in the sink daily. Showering happens when i have the time, the energy, and nothing else to do for a few hours afterwards.

Comefromaway · 14/11/2025 13:35

You also have to take into account there is one shower for the whole house. (Up to 4 people). So when everyone is trying to get ready in the morning it makes sense for me to wash in my en-suite.

I get the pits bit, but you can’t get rid of all of the bacteria on your skin. It’s physically impossible.

Do people really shave and wash hair every time they shower?

For me, it’s a scrub and hose down. Towels are already in the bathroom.

Wow, totally OTT.

I’m the same with socks too. Also I wear trainers without socks - all summer - and they smell completely….of nothing! I’ve never really smelled.

If you wash hair and shave every shower, you're doing it wrong in my view. I only shave in summer, and wash hair every 3 or do days. That does make the whole tedious repetitive business a bit quicker.

Also I only shampoo once and only condition occasionally

Lazygardener · 14/11/2025 14:09

Shower every day, and wash my very short hair at the same time. If I’ve been out and about a lot, I might shower twice a day. I do hate brushing my teeth, but do it because it has to be done.

SwingTheMonkey · 14/11/2025 14:12

I shower every day (twice if it’s a gym day) - same for the rest of my family. I’d feel gross if I didn’t wash every day.

Is it? Shower gel alone wouldn't clean you sufficiently. The soap does, but I like to smell nice after. Seems fine to me.

I shampoo twice as that's what works best for my hair. No I don't wash my hair every shower, admittedly. I do shave every shower though, year round.

Shave yes, wash hair no.

My towels are in the bathroom too, but I was just trying to demonstrate how the singular task of showering turns into a long list of tasks to my ADHD brain, and therefore sometimes makes it overwhelming to tackle.

It's the dettol especially that seems unnecessary, though also, I think shower gel alone would be fine

Most shower gels aren't antibacterial so whilst they'll remove dirt from the surface of your skin they won't actually rid you of bacteria. You also have to use an actual antibacterial soap like Dettol and not eg Dove, which isn't a soap but a 'beauty bar'.

I certainly noticed a difference in how clean I was/how much less I sweat once I started using the Dettol soap first. Maybe that's why I can go a couple of days in between showers!
