im Losing my hair. That’s it really. It breaks my heart every single day the hairs falling out . I know to some it’s only hair but to me I can’t bear the thought of going bald without my choice. I’m 35 and have just had my bloods done at the doctors for iron , thyroid etc and all normal. In August I was briefly hospitalised for anemia so I think it’s from the stress of that but I have no idea. I take pumpkin seed oil, biotin the lot.

no idea what I want from writing this but I’m over it . Including pictures of my hair and my hair loss. It certainly isn’t normal.

What’s your actual ferritin level? It needs to be up over 70 for hair loss

august would be perfect timing for telogen effluvium - it usually starts 3 months after illness, stress etc but it does stop

Apileofballyhoo · 12/11/2025 00:06

Was the anaemia related to heavy periods? And if so have they been getting progressively heavier? Could be perimenopause.

menopausalfart · 12/11/2025 00:08

I'm the same. It's so depressing.

My ferritin is in the 900s because I’ve had blood transfusions in the past for the anemia so have iron overload supposedly. It’s just like dead hair doesn’t feel like mine . It’s dry, matted and just drops off.

No it wasn’t . I have an autoimmune condition it wasn’t heavy periods sadly .

I’m praying it’s not early menopause as me and my partner were trying for a baby before all this.

Hopefully someone will be along with further suggestions, OP. Flowers

GnomeComforts · 12/11/2025 00:24

Have you tried Minoxidil.

I’ve been told I can’t take it as I’m trying for children. Otherwise I would 😢

It’s horrible isn’t it. Honestly I hate people looking at me because I think they’re looking at the thin patches. I don’t feel womanly or sexy. It’s awful 😞

Name changed for this.
OP, I have autoimmune problems and have lost my fringe and a bit further back, think Queen Elizabeth 1. So I bit the bullet and got a wig from a local salon, they were so kind. I feel great in it and life is so much easier. At home I wear a silk head band that covers the front area of my head. It just seems so normal now. Good luck 💐

Just wanted to say never underestimate the power of quality vitamins. Strong 1000 my vitb12. B Complex. Zinc 50mg. Quality iron and multi. Just give it a go would take about 3 months for them to kick in. All are needed together.

TheCorrsDidDreamsBetter · 12/11/2025 01:21

Excellent advice from PPs.

I had hairloss from an autoimmune condition, and couldn't take minoxidil either as I was also pregnant, then breastfeeding.

I did eventually take minoxidil and it really helped, where hair growth oils felt like the modern day snake oil, but could only do that after having DS. My hair is down to my bum now.

It really helped me at the time to own the situation though, and realise that there wasn't much else I could do to change the hair loss, especially as it got worse postnatally, and see it as short term pain for long term gain.

This really helped me, so do you think it would help you too? To trim your hair shorter, maybe french bob length, so your new growth will have less to grow to catch up with your hair length, and try some funky wigs, and hair wraps. I really love the ones from a small business called do the twist, and was also really lucky to have some support from a friend who showed me some lovely ways to wrap my head with a silk scarf. It was a bit out of my comfort zone originally, but I did really feel empowered by it after a few days of trying it out.

I know you can't take minoxidil right now, but it will still be an option once you've had your little one, and you deserve to feel beautiful and pretty and feminine.

Scalp rollering also helped more than any over the counter topical oil, bar minoxidil for me, but it can take some getting used to.

How long has it been coming out for?

Pryceosh1987 · 12/11/2025 02:11

I think you should speak to your GP for advice, they will tell you how you can improve the issue.

It could well be telogen effluvium after the anaemia
basically your body focuses on important stuff like being alive, blood, organs etc and hair like nails isn’t important so it stops it in the wrong phase which is why the shed starts about 3 months after (that’s basic but google will say more!)

i lost a lot of hair exactly 3 months after campylobacter and remember sobbing in the shower over it because it was handfuls. It slowed and then went back to my normal loss and regrowth started
it started very suddenly and when I say handfuls, I have photos and it really was alarming amounts
the GP did bloods and confirmed it was TE

Your Gp sounds better than mine. I took photos of the hair loss and even a clump of it. She organised the bloods which have come back normal. She didn’t test my hormones so that’s the next thing I’m gonna ask to be tested for. Have a feeling it will be a dermatology visit Aswell god knows how long I’ll wait for that.

This is how much I was losing every time I washed it

I’m actually ready to shave my hair off I can’t cope with this.
Lupin61190 · 12/11/2025 08:25

Could it be a catch22 where you are extremely stressed about it which then makes it worse? So hard to not stress about it though as it’s a traumatic thing to go through.
ask for your folate levels to be checked as that can cause hair loss too. How is your diet as eating 1g of protein per kg of body weight is crucial for hair

No it wasn’t . I have an autoimmune condition it wasn’t heavy periods sadly .

Alopecia is also an autoimmune condition, so I think I’d be talking to your doctor about whether your hair loss is linked to the condition you have. Autoimmune conditions can attack hair follicles.

My friend has an autoimmune condition and has also experienced sudden hair loss linked to it.

AlexaBeQuiet · 12/11/2025 08:45

Can you get a private appointment with a tricologist in your area that specialises in hair loss?

momager22 · 12/11/2025 08:49

Possibly telogen effluvium after an illness. You need to see a derm really rather than a gp. Could you pay privately ? I’ve had the same. The good news is it’s only for a few months then hair starts to grow in again. I cut mine shorter then grew it out again.
in the short term I’d suggest those coloured root sprays for grey hair as they help blend in bare patches, look at styling nice scarves or consider a hair piece if you really hate not having thick hair.
I started wearing a baseball cap and now my hair is ok I still love wearing it !

Hi OP from another fellow sufferer here :(
If you are looking to disguise it while you figure out why it’s happening, I can recommend hair toppers! There’s a group on FB called hair toppers for volume/coverage which has lots of advice.
