Fed up of cyclists not wearing hi viz clothing and no lights on bikes

Jdot · 11/11/2025 18:04

Yesterday about this time I saw about this time 10 cyclists including food couriers on bikes with no lights and no hi viz clothing. Black clothing

This really makes me cross. If car drivers hit cyclists that are not visible, drivers should not be punished for this

Not really.
it is drivers responsibility to look out for cyclists.no sympathy if biker is breaking highway code but if you hit a cyclist legally on the road your fault.cyclists have a right to use road, drivers have to have a licence.
Both biker and driver myself.

PlatinumEdition · 11/11/2025 18:09

I was just ranting about this yesterday.

My dd is learning to drive and a couple of days ago she nearly hit a bike whilst we were driving down a road near us, the guy was all in black with no lights, we only noticed him last minute as he had a orange Sainsbury's carrier bag on the handle bars. The road has no lighting so he was completely in the dark.

The same goes for pedestrians. We are semi rural and I can not tell you the amount of people who walk down a particular road near us which is heavily used by traffic but has no lighting or pavements. So many walk down there at night in dark clothing.

These people must be on a death wish. Idiots.

EmeraldRoulette · 11/11/2025 18:09

@Jdot I understand

I'm wearing a black coat and usually have on dark trousers so I bought a high viz strap. I have to walk along some narrow pathways and sometimes I jump when a cyclist goes past and they've got no hi vis

I know we're all wearing black so that doesn't help so I thought I'd get the strap because it's quite dark round here.

when I was driving, I was in London and I think people were better about wearing hi vis but some cyclists seem to have a death wish.

Brefugee · 11/11/2025 18:11

you need better laws. In Germany you are not allowed to ride a bike on a road (or cyclepath) without front and back lights.

Get a dashcam, front and back

Gettingbysomehow · 11/11/2025 18:12

They will die and be left in a ditch if they did that here for sure. Its pitch black and nobody would stop.

TooBored1 · 11/11/2025 18:23

I do wear hi viz, lights etc and still get drivers saying they didn't see me.....

Tbh, I'm more worried about the millions of drivers without a licence, insurance or mot.

ThatCoolGoose · 11/11/2025 18:36

Snap re insurance etc.

MiddleAgedDread · 11/11/2025 18:43

It’s getting ridiculous round here, so many delivery drivers dressed as ninjas on e-bikes! No lights even on the bikes and head to toe in black. The problem is they’re going as fast as cars so sneak up on you faster than road cyclists would and their understanding of the Highway Code leaves a lot to the imagination too.

mutinyonthetwix · 11/11/2025 18:43

Honestly never had a problem with actual cyclists. But I've definitely seen a huge rise in the past couple of years of people riding around erratically on ebikes after dark while dressed like the Milk Tray man with no helmet, lights or reflectors.

MathsMum3 · 11/11/2025 18:44

Not sure how you "saw" the cyclists if they were "not visible"?!

businessflop25 · 11/11/2025 18:44

There should be a lot more rules for cyclists on the road. They are an absolute menace round here. Absolutely no regard for anyone else. A child was almost hit at the weekend in town when a cyclist failed to stop at a pedestrian crossing. Went straight through a red light and missed the child by inches.

They should all have to wear hi vis, have lights front and back. Be insured and be identifiable. Groups of more than six should be banned as should racing on the road. And they should be made to follow the Highway Code and enforcement take place.

We are on the lands end to John O Groats route here and there are a ridiculous number of them.

TheWytch · 11/11/2025 18:48

It's a thing with teenagers on e scooters around here. All in black and usually with headphones in too. They will deliberately go the wrong way around the roundabouts etc.

We call them potential organ doners as it is only a matter of time. That goes for a fair number of the local cyclists too who dress as in the OP's post.

Toddlerteaplease · 11/11/2025 18:49

It terrifies me as a driver.

Amen to all of this!

Probably not visible until right at the last moment ie didn't see the cyclist from a distance but they suddenly appeared out of the darkness when close up. Perhaps if the cyclist had been wearing luminous clothing or had lights on their bike, they WOULD be visible from a distance. It's more important for all road users to be clearly seen than to be engaged over semantics.

You're not allowed to do it here either, it's just ignored and not enforced.

It's a legal requirement for Bicycle riders to have lights after dark. Many choose to ignore it which seems beyond stupid. Our local suburban streets are a menace with illegal electric motorbikes delivering food without lights.

Rule 60
At night your cycle MUST have white front and red rear lights lit. It MUSTalso be fitted with a red rear reflector (and amber pedal reflectors, if manufactured after 1/10/85). White front reflectors and spoke reflectors will also help you to be seen. Flashing lights are permitted but it is recommended that cyclists who are riding in areas without street lighting use a steady front lamp.

(a "MUST" in the Highway Code means it's a legal requirement)

I try shouting "LIGHTS!!" whenever I seem one, if everyone did it they might get the message....

SouthBeachDreams · 11/11/2025 19:13

Agreed, it’s getting really bad. The only thing I like about motorway driving is there’s no bikes or scooters. And I say that as a cyclist myself!

Bagamama · 11/11/2025 19:13

Yanbu. I'm a pedestrian and I bollocked a cyclist for this once, he was slow near a junction so he got the full pelt of my annoyance.

He got off his bike and walked it on the pavement sheepishly without shouting back at me. I was very very grumpy and probably wouldn't have shouted back at me either 😳.

I'm a pedestrian and wear something reflective and a light.

Snailslide · 11/11/2025 19:15

High viz isn’t needed. Lights are. I cycle to work on an unlit path. It’s pitch black and the amount of pedestrians that have NOTHING remotely reflective on them is crazy. You can get within a metre of them without seeing a thing.

Kudos to reflective strap lady! Nice one!

crossedlines · 11/11/2025 19:16

Yanbu, fucking idiots riding with no lights.

liquoriceallsortfamily · 11/11/2025 19:16

I find as driver the cyclists have really good front lights to help them see but appallingly dim back lights so it virtually impossible to see them from behind when driving.

I can’t stress enough how important decent back lights are.

What a stupid post, If a pretty much invisible cyclist is killed by a car that take isn’t going to help them.

Good job cars have got strong headlights and brakes

🙄 you can’t see them until they’re in the path of your headlights, you must have figured that???
