To apply or not?

We have been told there may be redundancies at my work. There is around 600 staff and we’ve been told it will be a small number affected. This was a month ago and have heard nothing since. In the meantime I started to look for jobs and applied for a senior post. In response the recruiter told me they didn’t think I had enough experience but invited me to apply for another role. The new company is well known and I’d say bigger than where I work now but is offering £4K less a year. There’s no negotiation and none of the perks are different to where I am now. Should I still apply or politely decline? WWYD?

Why not apply and see whether you get the job.

At which point you may find that rather than a £4k decrease from your current salary, it turns out to be an uplift on being unemployed.

Appying is a 2-way door, not a 1-way door. It costs you nothing to undo the action. Accepting the job will be the 1-way door, pretty much irreversible.

Do you like your current job? I think I'd take a watchful waiting approach rather than do myself out of 4k a year or potentially a redundancy package, but depends on your circumstances.

Make a decision when?if you get offered the new job

I really enjoy my current job so I am tempted to wait it out as I would get a decent pay out if the worst happens… but this is a job I would enjoy also - but probably not as much

I would apply and see what happens. It’s interview practice at the very least.
