On a lovely dog walk over the weekend, and my darling brother starts chucking a stick for our pup…. this is how the conversation went.

‘Hey bro can you not chuck sticks, I just don’t want to encourage the pup to chase sticks’

‘stop being the fun police…..’

’ok I’ll send you the vet bill when a stick gets stuck in her throat’

AIBU?????

I just feel like people don’t respect other people’s wishes. But why!?

Balls can also cause damage, if it goes in the throat a dog can choke and die.

This was discussed on Fri AM on BBC1 - no I don't know which programme but a quick 1st aid lesson was given too.

I didn't hear the advice given but guess it's either a ball with holes or a ball too big to fit in the dogs mouth.

I saw this… scary! The woman from place in the sun lost her dog due to a ball getting lodged in the dogs throat and it couldn’t breath.

How on earth is this in any way a drama ? You are a non-drama llama OP.

Are you a dog owner?????

If you throw a ball for your dog then someone else throws a stick the next day - guess what. Your dog is going to be “into” chasing sticks. You can’t train them out of interest in sticks. You can tell your brother not to throw them and discourage your dog from chewing them and all that but you can’t just have a dog who doesn’t like sticks because no one ever threw them one.

The fact you would even call this drama gives the impression you are dramatic and tiresome. Sorry.

You clearly need educating in behaviour in dogs! I really hope you don’t own a dog because by the sounds of it it’ll be feral and have no guidance from its owner! Good luck.

Having had to pay an ENORMOUS vet bill from my big dog chasing a stick and running onto it, causing throat damage, you're not wrong to stop him. But couldn't you give him a ball and say 'throw this instead'? Most people don't know about stick damage, and most dogs will never suffer from anything worse than losing their chosen stick, so I can see both sides.

Mandylovescandy · 10/11/2025 18:51

YANBU, I have a family member who does similar, minimises anything you say about how you want things done (no dog here but stuff with DC) and it is frustrating as a pattern of behaviour

Xccccc · 10/11/2025 18:58

Some of these replies are solely focused on the stick. The op has a preference that she doesn't want sticks thrown for her dog which is her right ,some people will agree and some won't. Whatever, but it isn't about the stick is it. It's about her brother minimising her feelings, dismissing her opinions and shutting her down with name calling. She is wanting advice and support on that not whether sticks are bad for dogs.

He also has a dog. I’m surprised he didn’t know and also respect that I said ahh don’t chuck sticks please. He is childish and selfish so for me to spend extra time explaining why would have gone over his head and I’d have been even more the ‘fun police’.

So you just decided to join him in being childish?

Why would bits of stick get stuck in your puppies throat?

Happened to my dog, little bit broke off and got stuck in his throat. Anyway he was fine after a very expensive out of hours trip to the vet and an operation! After that I’m wary of stick throwing 😅

Snailslide · 10/11/2025 11:39

Have I missed loads of stories of dogs dying from chasing sticks?

Well I know several dogs who’ve got them stuck, one of them needed an operation. So certainly pretty common.

Why would bits of stick get stuck in your puppies throat?

Dogs can dive on sticks that might be pointing upwards having become stuck in the ground. Dog could end up with a lacerated throat and a frantic run to the vets. I speak from experience

79Beastie · 10/11/2025 20:51

My dog nearly died from getting some part of a stick stuck in his throat. He had been chewing on the stick which we were throwing for him. He was 11 months old at the time. This was in the afternoon by 6pm his neck started swelling up noticed it got a bit worried rang the emergency vet got him there 40 mins later his neck was huge. The vet said if we hadn't got him there when we did he wouldn't of survived. His jaw had started to lock. He had an operation and was kept in. I've never been so scared. He's 10 now and we have never let him catch or chew a stick since. Lesson learnt and a very expensive one too

This is it. It’s not the first time. And won’t be the last. I’ve ignored over the years but recently starting to snap back.

Oh my. We have been throwing sticks for dogs forever. I complete agree with your brother.

That said if my sibling asked me not to, I would silently roll my internal eyes but say nothing. Your dog your rules.

Seriously this world is going mad with precaution. If there is even the slightest risk we recoil. Then we wonder why younger people canT cope with basic risk management.

I recognise that also. I was highlighting more that not only is OPs brother condescending and takes charge of a dog that isn’t his presumably? He’s also wrong .
So of course there may be a big backstory here of OP’s feelings and opinions being belittled. Maybe why OP didn’t explain further why they didn’t want the dog having sticks to their brother.
Maybe keep the dog away from him.

& you’ve gone & made a reply without reading any of the comments about serious or lethal accidents dogs have had catching sticks. I hope you don’t own any animals.

Are you a dog owner?????

Yes I am !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (added the exclamation points to satisfy your love of over dramatisation)

Obviously I agree with your view on throwing sticks dogs, i thought all dog owners knew you don't do it, it's hardly new info.

But as a previous poster said, it not about sticks. It's about you describing in your OP a conversation with your brother as a family drama. It wasn't. You described a couple of sentences of a pretty mild exchange. You may have added more detail later, I don't know, (and frankly don't care).

Now you'll probably go off on one about how I should know all about the dangers of sticks, but you know and I know that the sticks are not what I as referring to when I called you a non drama llama. You didn't have a drama you had a mild disagreement. Move on and don't let your brother throw sticks for your dog, it's not the Cuban Missile crisis.

You are quite right!!!!!!! Dogs can get horrible injuries from sticks so regardless of the cost, who wants that?!! You can buy long rubber/nylon sticks from decent pet supplies. They’re much safer, even if they do get lost sometimes! Your brother just probably doesn’t know the dangers of a random, wooden stick.

If your bro did it a second time after you requested he not throw sticks, then maybe you have some drama. But if this is all the drama you can come up you are quite fortunate! I could write books....

Tulipvase · 15/11/2025 23:02

After a 2.5k vets bill (and actually turned out that there was no injury), I get you. And had there been an injury we were talking 10k plus……
