DS shouting at mil

Rsbtt · 09/11/2025 19:03

DS is five. Yesterday we happened to go past a wedding. There was a traffic jam and so when the bride came out had quite a while to look at the dress etc, not massively interested tbh but mil was, fair enough.

It was raining and for some reason mil got very dramatic about it, she just kept repeating ‘ahh! What a shame! It’s raining!’ It did get annoying and she started aiming it at DS - ‘DS ahh look, what a shame, it’s raining, what a shame!’ DS surprised everyone by suddenly shouting IT’S NOT MY FAULT!

Normally mil is nice enough but she does have a tendency to repeat herself and I can see that at five it probably came over like she was expecting DS to do something about it? I have to admit I didn’t really know what to say myself!

AIBU to say DS didn’t do anything wrong here?

Your MIL is being ridiculous, why was she repeating herself like a parrot to your DS it probably did sound like she was expecting him to do something about the rain & shouted because he was stressed.

outerspacepotato · 09/11/2025 19:05

Great response from your son!

MatchaMatchaMatcha · 09/11/2025 19:06

Your son was rude and he should have been told to apologise for his rudeness. Fine, he's five and learning to emotionally regulate but admonishments for rudeness are part of that.

Nonsense, MIL was rude for commenting. #TeamFiveYrOld

Whoevenarethey · 09/11/2025 19:10

I don't blame him for shouting a response. Usually conversation goes two ways so if MIL kept repeating the same point he would have assumed she wanted a reply.
I assume the conversation moved on and that was the end of it

This!!! 👏

SwanRivers · 09/11/2025 19:13

I hope you told him off for shouting at his grandmother?

What he said was perfectly understandable and actually quite amusing 🤣

But he shouldn't be shouting at her.

Takeoutyourhen · 09/11/2025 19:14

What did she expect him to say? “Ooh the marriage won’t last long because the Heavens opened,eh Nana!”
Sounds like the Royle Family!

'Rude' for commenting? How on earth did you work that one out? 😳

It's not like she wound the window down and shouted "Oi love, it's such a shame it's raining!"

Within earshot?

You know they were in a car, stuck in a traffic jam in the rain?

Unless the wedding party consisted mainly of bats, I'm pretty sure they didn't hear her.

As you've edited out your comment, I'll add it here so it makes sense Blush

"Sounds like MIL was pissing on the possibly within earshot bride’s parade to me, especially if she kept repeating herself."

BartholemewTheCat · 09/11/2025 19:17

@swanriversA simple comment would’ve sufficed. MIL was a stuck record and got called on it.

Yeah, I re-read as I thought they had walked by

Annoying yes, but not rude.

Goldenboxes · 09/11/2025 19:18

Poor child.
She sounds ridiculous.

Millytante · 09/11/2025 19:21

Poor lad! Fair play to him, I say. Logical, at least!
One certainly ought not shout at Granma, but if Granma is insisting on pestering a five year old boy over some bewildering issue, over and over, I can’t really can’t blame him for seeing a bit of red mist.
I’d anticipate a quiet word back home to reassure him Granny wasn't having a go at him or expecting anything of him, as it all must have been a bit of a shock for him, and a gentle reminder about swallowing outbursts when feeling cross at grownups like Granma.

😂😂😂

Rsbtt · 09/11/2025 19:29

I felt a bit bad for them both. I don’t think mil meant any harm but I was feeling a bit ‘well what do you want me to do about it mil’ myself.

I didn’t say anything to DS, it all just moved on. Mil said a bit indignantly that she wasn’t saying it was his fault then the traffic started moving. Hopefully the couple are not divorced yet!

Sorry, OP, but that made me laugh! I don’t think he did anything wrong, but I guess it wouldn’t hurt to talk to him about how we try not to shout at people…

GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut · 09/11/2025 19:46

That's really funny! 😂

It sounds completely reasonable of him to me - he's FIVE!

He thought he was being unfairly blamed for something that was nothing to do with him, of course he's going to be a bit indignant. So would I be if I thought someone was blaming me for the bloody weather! 😂

londongirl12 · 09/11/2025 19:47

Does she have a habit of saying things like that, that he’s taking to heart? Does he feel like other things are his fault? Or was he just annoyed about her going on and on about it?
on my wedding day, the bottom of my dress was filthy (married outside, photos on a hillside etc). I didn’t care whatsoever, but my MIL went on and on “oh look at your dress, oh your dress is ruined”. It was bloody annoying, when I was having a great time enjoying myself!!

🤣🤣🤣

I think the comment was very funny from a 5yo.

I wouldn’t have been happy if my DS shouted it rudely and loudly at his nan.

But in a 5yo exasperated manner with the matching hand movements I’d have found it hilarious 🤣
